Maybe the hips are coming from the cow's side as well? What breeding is in your cow leg wax?

think you'd better have your vet on stand by with his sharp knives. Blue on any type of blue 95% of the time will not calve naturally!! be prepared. hope all works out

Disagree totally. Auld fella has several BB x BrFr cows here that go in calf to blue every year and never an issue with them.

No actually, he was asking about him with the last year, he said he wants him for breeding and he must do too because he paid more then what has was worth for the hook and that wouldnt be his form.

will you buy a new one in the spring

Ya, will probably buy 2 bulls. A simmental for definate and I am havnt really decided whether to go for a charolais or a lim for the other. If I could get an easy calving simmental I would go with a charolais but thats easier said then done.

at the risk of offending half the boarders here and yourself i cant see the attraction to those simmentals.. ive a bit of a set on them, give me a nice ch or lim cow any day with half the milk

I'd agree with you van, big bloody cows that can often have too much milk, like every breed they have their place....just not around here:)

Dont worry about it, we had 4 simmental bulls over the last 15 years so I know what to be looking out for with them. I couldnt fault any we had and there was none of them 800kg or even close to it to be honest.

Given your farm type would you not look at a shorthorn and a charolais?

We used to have a lot of shorthorn cows but to be honest I prefer the simmental's and I think they bred better stock, some of the shorthorns used to be hard wintered too and needed every bit of feeding that the sim would, they have worked well for us over the years so I dont really see the need to change. If I were to go traditional it would probably be hereford because they hold up really well for the winter but im not ready to take that step just yet :) The lims are doing my head in lately, they are so nervous around strangers its bordering ridicilous, they went stone mad when we were testing a few weeks ago and it has me turned off them a bit because I have them fairly well socialised.

That's why I started using a simmental on my Lim cows - better chance of getting a quiter animal. I have bred some lovely red lim heifers but they were stone mad.

I can walk through them by myself and they wont even stand up but as soon as they are in a bit of an enclosed area or a stranger is about you can see their eyes light up and the only way I could describe they go is blind with fear, Im not looking forward to calving a few of them to be honest. I love farming and cattle but could do without putting my life in danger every day and I am sure I have a lot of my luck used up over the last few years with wicked cows calving, I got a nice knock off one earlier this year.
