I'm on similar performance sink, with my 6990, and I've looked into my options, but even though the new gen stuff is faster, its just not fast enough to justify moving to a single card, and going to a CF or SLI setup is going to cost a fortune.

I don't know what games you play, but I've built and used a CF7970 setup at 2560*1440, and online BF3 ultra settings I was sitting around 90fps, and a single card around 50. you should be getting in the region of 70 anyway if you turn AA down a bit?

best you and I can hope for is the 7990 coming in at ~€750. probably wishful thinking.

my next card I'm hoping to do 120fps in BF3 so when ever the OC PCB for the catleap come up I can move to 2560*1440 @ 120hz

I used to play BF3 a lot, but haven't for about 6 months now, will probably pick it up again when the new large maps get released. I play a wide variety of games from Total War to Mass Effect, most recently I've been playing Max Payne 3 which I bought in the steam sale and my system has handled most with relative ease. However there are a few games which I need to turn down the graphics such as the Witcher 2. I have an itch but I'm probably going to bide my time.

Just a quicky. Can you generally do any CPU overclocking with a stock cooler?

    Specifically I've got an i5 750.

How hot is it running? Do a prime95 test and that'll tell you if you have room to work with.

i7s have gone crazy high on just air, so I'd say you have soom room on stock.

I haven't overclocked it yet. I don't know much about it so I want to be really cautious.

The problem with the i5-750 is that there are different i5-750 cores on different manufacturing processes. Just try and keep it under 80C and you should be fine. Don't be disappointed if you don't get great results - stock coolers are meh and you may not have the best core.

Other good cases to choose around that price range are the Xigmatek Asgard and Bitfenix Merc. These cases are advantageous as the move towards a more screwless design.

I rather not use this case, due to some reasons.

Go back a page and read though the instructions there - did that solve the issue?

I cant hook it up to get it going in device manager. my pc at home didnt want to boot with it connected, and my laptop only has one drive bay obviously, so i cant go messing with device manager since i cant boot windows, unless maybe i can run it off a usb, which im guessing is the root im gonna be going down at this stage based on the solution given. :/

Stick it in - is it in BIOS - install windows - sorted.

Thats unless your windows is on a hidden partition on the HDD of the lappy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭kenyard

bios doesnt recognise or see it. its just blank in the list where the ssd seleection should be.
im guessing i may have to format it or select a certain setting is all.. from that previous page that is
i had thought myself it would be as easy as plug in, install, and go

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,224 ✭✭✭Procrastastudy

Formatting it is a windows thing - you need it in the BIOS first and no amount of formatting will help you there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭kenyard

edit bios settings or what so? i had looked at bios update alright, but its not an easy install thing, which has put me off doing it as its something i know you dont want to mess up...
since theres already ssd option there (though it wont recognise mine or its not listed) i assumed i just had to do something with the ssd first to get it recognised.. ok cheers anyway. ill see what i can manage in the bios options so later :/

damn, thats a lot of backers already... needed 250k they got 1.5mil so far.

looks cool. i can see it work too. sit by your pc and use controls like normally would, but you get the freedom of your head to look around.

so all in all we get that shift from 3D to VR now. is that the new hot thing?

Anyone know where I can pick up a generic black drive bay cover quite cheap? Cannot get my hands on the original covers. A google search didn't throw up anything worthwhile for ireland/UK, few showing for the States alright...I could put something else in there but I've no need for a fan controller... any ideas?

What about an Icy Box IB-863-B?

multi Card Reader with Audio/Mic, USB 2.0 & 3.0, eSATA-bound to find some use for it:)

    Depends on the budget, o
    You could go for some
kind of multimedia display- not cheap thougth. Another option is a hot swap-able HDD dock, think theyre about €35 or so..on the
Phone so can't searc properly, but google is your friend :)

Any keyboard that doesn't have massive chunky keys makes me want to projectile vomit onto my screen when I touch them.
It's like nails on a chalkboard for me. :o

So that Apple one and the logitec one at number 1 actually make me feel slightly unwell just by looking at them.

Agree. The apple keyboard is nice to look at but I hate using them. Glad to see my Logitech G series keyboard and mouse scoring well though. :)

That G510 for €42 was the best deal I ever jumped on. Love this bad boy.

The problem with the MX518 is that it's got quite a short life. The right-angled turn of the cable inside the mouse seems to be too much strain on it.
