Hey all, I got the Samsung 380 SSD today. It isn't showing up in Windows, but is detected in the Bios. The manual says to ensure the operation mode is set to AHCI or RAID. Currently it is set to IDE. Which one is the better option, AHCI or RAID?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,224 ✭✭✭Procrastastudy

Both are likely to result in BSODs - you need to look at how to change your registry settings to check the driver when you boot up - there are a couple of places the reg needs editing. Then you can change your BIOS to AHCI mode.

    Have you initialized the disk?

Is Windows already insatlled or are you doing a clean installation now? If it's already installed follow the directions below:

Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools. Double click Computer Management and then click Disk Management in the left hand column.

    Format the drive from there.

Also, it's best to have it in AHCI mode, but it should show up anyway.

I suggest you keep it simple and set the sata mode to AHCI because raid can be a pain in the backside if it goes wrong .

Is windows on a separate drive?
Beware that if you change it to AHCI when windows is already installed, it will bluescreen your windows. You can get around this. Details in the SSD guide in my signature.

As far as I know, RAID is usually the same as AHCI, but with RAID. Better to stick it to AHCI though to be sure anyway.

Have you added it as a separate drive?
You might need to initialise the drive.
Start menu -> Right-click on computer -> Manage
Go down to disk management on the left hand side and click it. A window should pop up asking if you want to initialise it. You can assign it a drive letter then.

You'd get the best out of it by actually having windows on it, unless you have an SSD for windows already.

Edit: Wow, well beaten to it. Way too slow.

Wow, thanks for the quick responses :)

So I followed Eboggles instructions and a popup appeared saying:
You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager to access it

I have the options to use MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table). It says it only recommended GPT for large drives, but just want to double check you guys/gals.

I have windows installed on another SSD, and I have one more IDE connected up. So this is been set up as a separate drive (my steam drive :D), not installing windows on it.

You mention changing the operating mode to ACHI after windows is installed will cause BSOD? Would you recommend I format my main drive and re-install windows with it set to ACHI or is it ok to continue with it set to IDE?

Edit: Sorry I see Procrastastudy has outlined the steps required to change to ACHI. IS this something that I really need to do, I normally format my drives once a year, so I'm thinking if I could leave it till then, that would be preferred.

Personally I'd check which drive is faster then install windows on that after setting the BIOS to ACHI - it should be quite a bit quicker than IDE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

You can enable AHCI in windows and then in the BIOS.

If you'll be formatting down the road, you could clone windows to the new drive since they are both SSDs.

Well one is a M4 and the other is 830, both connected to SATA 3 slot, so I would imagine the difference in speed would be small

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Ah, not much difference then. Just change it to AHCI in windows (instructions in my signature), then change it in the BIOS, initialise your drive and go ahead and enjoy it.

    yes

your mobo is mirco atx and the case is atx

of course you get the rare times it doesnt fit but depends on the case

I would say 99% they would work because they are both atx , you could have a flick around to see if you can find any build with your mainboard and that case .

yes thats what I'm thinking myself.

Yes it ATX its says its 31.5 cm by 21.1 cm.

    According to the Pc case meaasurements its Case Dimensions (W x H x D): 185mm x 445mm x 460mm. W is the width, d is ? And H is for the height.

    So the case height is 460 > 315 but the width 185 < 460.

Has anyone here picked up a Raspberry Pi? I'm just about to order one from RS but dispatch time is 16 weeks! I thought they'd increased production.

I've got one. it looks lovely. I honestly haven't had time to use it, but it'll be used with xbmc to stream movies from my server.

I just ordered one and the clear case. I'm planning on just messing around with it and seeing what I can do with it. I might even try fitting it into the car with the help of a mate.

Go back a page and read though the instructions there - did that solve the issue?

Planning on buying a few bits from harwareversand for my HTPC and new server. Currently toying with the idea of upgrading my graphics cards on my gaming PC, I have 2X 2GB 6950s in CF, with unlocked shaders and a modest OC, just wondering whether you guys think it's worth upgrading? It plays everything I want at close to max settings at 2560x1440, but I want to keep it future proof and it might be a good idea to sell the 6950s before they depreciate a lot. My CPU is a i5 2500k @ 4.5 GHz and my board is a P67.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,224 ✭✭✭Procrastastudy

What are you hoping to get for them now?

There aren't much in the way of more powerful set ups atm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭sink

I don't know something in the range of €160 each and then put the money into a new 7970 with an eye to adding a second in maybe a year or so.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,224 ✭✭✭Procrastastudy

I think you'd end up dropping down in frame rates on a single 7970.

You have the boxes etc for the 6950s are they still under warranty?

I have the boxes and i'm not too sure about the warranty. I bought them March last year and I flashed the bios to unlock the shaders which I'm pretty sure voids the warranty. It's probably not worth it as it will cost me an extra hundred or so for not much.

But I'm not sure if it will fit my motherboard.

Other good cases to choose around that price range are the Xigmatek Asgard and Bitfenix Merc. These cases are advantageous as the move towards a more screwless design.
