Yes, complete overhaul of sport in Ireland is what's needed. The fact that it's lumped in with arts and tourism in the government departments shows how highly they rank it in importance.

yes another good point, sport is huge worldwide it can potentially create billions so it should stand alone as a government dept.

Answer me this, have you been following the progress of any of Ireland's Olympians since 2008? You seem to have a strong opinion on who should and shouldn't be sent, so enlighten me on who our athletes to watch will be on the track next week?

I don't see what your problem is? I'm expressing my opinion, an opinion a few others have made similar posts about. You don't agree, clearly, and that's fine. I follow as best I can considering how poor the coverage of Irish athletes actually is in the media here.

I have no idea who to look out for on the track as I'm not a massive fan of track events. I'd guess none of them, without meaning to be harsh.

The fact of the matter is that most of the RTE presenters and the official twitters of the relevant sports organisations are praising them for finishing 8th in their heats, or almost getting a PB. Fine if we want to send anyone who makes the Olympic set standard, but I don't like the "ah well, they did well to be there" attitude that we still seem to have in this country.

As far as I'm concerned the only one that deserves praise for just being there is Kieran Behan.

EDIT: just seen the Mod note. Will say no more about it.

O'Leary/Burrows 3rd last at the turn in race one.

I'm watching this without commentary so finding it a bit hard to follow...is the turn a half way point, or how long is the race in total?

I think they're heading back to start/finish line and then another lap.

Women's artistic gymnastics quals are on, subdivision 3 is coming up on BBC3 at 14:45. There's no Irish in it (or any subdivision) but this one has GB and the favourites- USA so it's worth a watch. GB will not medal in the team finals, but they WILL make them, which is a huge achievement for them. Routines to look out for are McKayla Maroney USA on vault, Gabby Douglas and Kyla Ross USA on bars and Beth Tweddle GB, Imogen Cairns, Rebecca Tunney GB and Aly Raisman USA on beam and Rebecca Tunney GB, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber USA and Victoria Moors (Canada) on floor.

Yep best of 2 qualification runs count....I think maybe top 20 or so qualify for the semis which aren't on today.

Good run from Rheinisch. Shame about the penalty. Hopefully he can improve on it during run 2.

All change in the Star class - Ireland up to second in the standings.

Mark Kyle will be our last competitor in the Dressage in 10 minutes. A score in the 40's would be brilliant to add onto the 2 women's scores.

Over to the BBC red button coverage in the next few mins as Irish combination of Mark Kyle and Coolio will be in the arena in eventing dressage. Don't be surprised to see a score in the 50s as this is their weakest discipline by far....to improve the Irish team score he needs to dip under 55.60 pens so that's the target.
He's due in at 3:10pm....10 mins time.

Got there before me....score in mid to low 50s is likely as dressage really isn't their strong point.... below 55.60 is the target to improve the Irish team score.

The least your employer could do is supply a beanie with built-in earphones.

Notice at the gymnastics (on bbc3 at the mo) they've tried to solve the empty seats issue by filling them with army people! There's a massive block of Khaki along one side there. Ridiculous.

O'Leary/Burrows finish second in race one - great start for them. :)

Medal rivals Brazil 4th, Britain 11th

Rheinisch's time finally beaten, he's second.

Mark Kyle scored a disappointing 58.70 penalties....doesn't improve the team total...Irish team stay in 10th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Excellent news on O'Leary and Burrows...it's so important to start off well. It's been a good afternoon of competition for the Irish team.

Fantastic for Rheinisch to get that penalty removed. :)

Excellent news in the sailing as well. Fair play to the lads.

Cracking women's road race over on BBC1, treacherous conditions especially at the bends, teaming down, 3 leaders 50 seconds ahead of The Peleton, heading for home.
