Thought I'd check back in to this forum - after many years and failed attempts I honestly feel I have kicked the habit! I'm not sure how long I'm off (some major wobbles at the start with nights out :o - alcohol makes me crazy for a cigarette and destroys my willpower!). I am still on the Niquitin minis but don't use a lot, some days none. I feel I have broken the psychological addiction which has alway been my problem - even with patches I would smoke and feel like I hated it as I didn't need the nicotine, but felt I needed to smoke if that makes sense.

Anyway, I am jogging, eating healthy, cutting out or cutting down on alcohol / takeaways / sweets, and saving a fortune!!

I am hoping to lose some weight (NOT put on from quitting in case anyone is worried) and I actually think quitting helps, as smoking makes it so much harder to excercise. I tried to do the couch to 5k as a smoker and it was so tough, now I'm flying, and even feel more motivated. Keep up the good work folks!!

Bastid things. Woke up this morning feeling pretty positive, got passed the first of the day one pretty easy. Had a fairly long walk. Cooked dinner and got passed the after food one easy. Got through watching the match handy enough. Made the mistake of being brave by leaving the last smoke I couldn't finish last night lying around my room. About half an hour ago I started entertaining the thought of 'what would it feel like if I smoked it, would I feel calmer?'. The whole thought process snowballed and I ended up smoking the damn thing. Just a heavy feeling afterwards. Bit pissed off. Gonna start again tomorrow with no temptations around

@Dead Man Walking - do not fall into the mind set that one is ok, or because you smoke one you are back on the fags and start smoking again. Keep up the good work!

Off them 5 months this Monday. Mostly going fine but just back from a weeks holiday and there were some rough points.
Sitting in the beach all day and out for pints each evening took it's toll.
Nearly folded but just managed to not buy any. Delighted I didn't smoke as I would have been using the excuse of being on holiday.
Really convinced I'm off them for good now.

So I am 35 days free of the smokes. Feels great. I did the whole alan carr thing and I think it was the best money I have ever spent. I have already saved the money for it in smokes since quitting and it just shows you a different side to smoking that just makes it easier to stop.

Like everyone I still get the question that looms in everyones mind of weather or not you want to have one. Just have to tell yourself you know you don't. Fair play to everyone on this thread. Great thread.

    Hi All

Just checking in I stopped the dreadful things on the 9/4/12 still going strong starting to feel sorry for other smokers, some times I feel I want a smoke but the reality is I don't there's too much to loose. Its all a mental game. My dad had lung cancer last year at 57 he was told he wouldn't survive after a review he had surgery and chemo he is doing well guess what he still smokes bloody fool or what????? Makes me sick, anyway doing my best to make sure it doesn't happen to me....... keep up the great work everyone don't let the dam things win.........

Just smoked my last cigarette there.
Not being disrespectful in any way to those who are in the process of giving up, but I was taken for a mug all those 8 months I was back on them having been a non smoker for 8 years.
Very excited at being an ex smoker with a sense of trepidation thrown in-I suppose in a way I;'m posting this so I can look at it if I ever need to.
One day at a time and I know I'll have the greatest con thrown at mankind beaten-can't wait for those peaceful sleeps to return:)

just over 6 weeks off them, ran the dublin race series in just under 50 mins (5miles) feeling great. I would say that this is not my first time off them, but starting running, has motivated me to stay off them as the benefits are unbelievable.

I plead with anyone who is thinking of giving up, to just go ahead and do. there is never a better time than right now. if you have the right frame of mind it is a lot easier to do than you think. i am 32 , smoked since i was 16 ( half my bloody life) I have way more money and i feel great.

I am heading to london this weekend to see friends. My best friend has been off them a year and I will be just over a month off them.

This is the first time in 15 years we have both quit. We talked about it for many years but now it has happened :)

She did it with accupuncture and is flying it now. Not sure if anyone on here has tried that, but she is living proof it works and was a 10-20 a day smoker for over 20 years.

    Well done everyone :)

    Six months for me now.

Great work everyone, keep it up!

my 6 months is on the 16th!! well done to us two!!!!

    i can't believe i did this..

and the amount of times I really thought i would smoke when out; i had even kind of excepted that it would happen inevitably,. but it has not. And i really do not think that it will at this stage cos I did not even miss them now and I do not feel that I am missing out on anything.

My brother and his fiance both smoke and they are in the process of buying a house etc. I was out with the at the weekend and I felt sorry for them cos they both smoke quite a bit, but they have started smoking these small versions of ciggys in am attempt to smoke less and spend less. They would save a fortune if they both just quit. Their smoking habit is nearly the same price as their month mortgage will be.. terrible..

I'm nearly six months off them now. It's great and I am so confident now about remaining off them. It's funny though, that now I look at other smokers with pity! It sounds rather pious I know, but I genuinely do feel sorry for people who still smoke.Hopefully they will quit when the time is right for them.
My sister who still smokes called round the other day and the stink of fags off her was terrible. Smokers genuinely don't realise how they smell to non-smokers.It really does give a bad impression.
Anyway,I check in here from time to time as it's great to see somuch determination from people who want to quit.
My advice is,that once you're through the first month, then it is just self disciplne and not being lazy in your thinking.Don't make excuses for yourself anymore. It is very achievable for anyone.

4 months off them and ended up having a cigar on my birthday which was totally stupid cos i have now smoked 10 cigars in 2 weeks.
Am going to get an e-cigarette to have as backup. Don't want to end up back on them so am viewing this as a test of will. Took me a few days to write this post as i was so embarrassed at stumbling ;(

I'll be a year off them on the 5th of next month - the eCig has been brilliant. Lots of good advice in the vaping forum.

Yeah but we are smelling them as EX smokers. I wonder what they smell like to people who never smoked?

I'll be off them 3 months shortly..i went cold turkey and doing fairly well.
I dont suffer from cravings or withdrawls as such, more trying to compensate the bad habit by keeping myself busy. be it running, gym or whatever. I have put on a bit of weight though as at the start i turned to food but i know if i keep up the running it'll fall off eventually..it certaintly outweighs the health risks associated with smoking
Best of luck to everyone, keep it up ;)

It's fine man. It's the same for everyone. Although the constant cravings are gone you will still have certain situations when a cigarette is the first thing that comes to mind(stress in work being a major one for me) but if you could manage the constant cravings for the first few weeks these should be no problem for you. My problem is that I sometimes try to convince myself that it would be better for me and the people around me if I just went back on the smokes. I look back a few months and see myself as some kind of modern day saint because the smokes always took the edge off. It's when I'm in this frame of mind that I seriously think about just heading to the shop and buying a pack of delicous JPB but the urge usually passes in a minute or two.
Stick with it, in time you'll figure out your own way to get through these cravings.
    Best of luck with it

Yeah, 6 and a half months in and very rare to have a craving, but sometimes one just jumps up out of nowhere.

Had to bring a relative to A&E during the night recently and during the 7 hour wait went outside for air and there were people smoking and it crossed my mind, a fag would help ease the tiredness and stress - but it was just a fleeting thing - it wouldnt help at all.

Noticed people in the waiting room smoking things that looked like cigarettes, produced vapour but werent cigarettes?

I just realized my 6-month milestone as a non-smoker has come and gone and I didn't even notice.

I have everyone who contributes to this forum to thank - reading through it while idle one day gave me the push I needed to stop.

Thanks everyone, and congratulations to us all!

They are e-cigs (electronic cigarettes) - and they have been my saviour:D I will be six months off the fags in a couple of weeks thanks to my e-cig!! Have reduced the level of nicotine in the e-cig gradually, as you would with patches, and am doing great!! People don't believe that I am FINALLY a non-smoker:p:p

Sorry Shazanne but from having friends on e-cigarettes I don't think your finally a non smoker as your still smoking. It's not like you fully stopped, your still getting nicotine and your still putting something in an out of your mouth. Your still addicted to the habit of smoking with e-cigarettes.
I stopped using champix, i'm fully off smoking the nicotine and the habit. I think it's the only way to go. I'd ditch the e-cigarettes get some champix and give up the nicotine and the habit for good. Your six months on the e-cigarettes, still wasting money, still taking nicotine and still smoking something.
I'm 3mts off them after smoking 20 benson a day for 20 years. Tried loads of things even the e-cigarettes and the champix is really the only route that works if you follow the course. Go for it. Stop pretending.
