    Ahhh,
I see what I did there...
I, of course, meant to say Dragon Quest VIII...

My first Latin numeral error in a long long time, I am suitably shamed.. :(

God damn! I hope your all happy. Ruined street fighter on the Snes for me. Was playing Street Fughter Alpha 2 on it there and it's just not enjoyable as street fighter on my Saturn.

To put it another way, how many folk still play Morrowind?
I have it on the Xbox and its a huge game, lots to do, good story, but who has the 50 hours to invest in an old sandbox RPG?
Oblivion is an even better game but again, who has the time to invest in it?
Skyrim is out now over 6 months and I am dying to play it but don't know where the time is going to come from, same goes, to a lesser extent, with Mass Effect 3.

I don't know why I like Oblivion. I think its actually a guilty pleasure. I'm just OK with (or used to turning a deaf ear to) so much of the stuff that's executed so poorly in the game.

I think its similar to how much I let slide when playing Final Fantasy VII.

:pac: "I've heard others say the same."

I can't complain about the scope of Oblivion / Skyrim's world. They can be a joy to just simply wander around in and take in the sights. There's few, if any, gaming worlds that feel so grand, so beautiful, so mysterious.

What bothers me is everything within the world. The repetitive dungeons. The lame combat. The pitifully generic fantasy tropes. The creepiness of the inhabitants. Becoming overburdened (inventory management is my least favourite things about all Bethesda games, hands-down). I really thought Skyrim would address these complaints to some degree. But no, it's just Oblivion with snow and a new menu system. There's so much potential in the games, but Bethesda just seem to lack the talent to give it that extra 'push' into greatness. IMO, of course.

I just like the fact you can go off mission and have a blast just being good/bad.
Sure, the dungeons are repetitive, perhaps this is where the next gen will come in, random dungeons of an epic nature, don't care, I'll be still trying to finish Oblivion!

The over-encumbered game mechanic is plain broken. It is a symphony of suck.

That it hasn't been thrown out has meant other things that are repetitive, immersion breaking and unfun have become fixtures - expected even in new Elder Scrolls games.

I don't enjoy repetitive mental division, and don't consider it a hobby, but seemingly Bethesda thinks I'm a total fiend for calculating item value to item weight ratios, just so I can afford to buy items from a shop keeper who behaves more like a vending machine than a shop keeper.

I don't go to shop keepers so I can repeated play a minigame that results in them not hating the sight of me either. Not after already going through my "arrows are 10:1 versus books are 10:1, which of the venders do I get on with better? Wait, do they even buy books in this town? What's their mercantile rating?" crap.

One thing I haven't tried doing is killing ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE who has an annoying minigame or mechanic that as a player you're stuck using. Perhaps the Dark Brotherhood have an employee of the month award or a scoreboard.

Playing a few games on the Nintendo iQue for the first time this evening. Frame rate on Fzero definitely seems better than on the standard N64. The Chinese language is a bit of a pain though to be honest and as I said before this is more a curiosity and collectors item than something you'd actually use regularly.

Was playing HyperChase again tonight for what seemed like a half an hour tonight, but was actually an hour.
Man that Veccy totally defies the space time continuum, it just sucks you in.

I have to say I'm struggling to get anywhere better than just over 3000 points in GAME 2, which has 5 lives.

The fact I'm only using my thumbs with the controller probably doesn't help,

but button 4 needs more pressure than the others due to wear, and I'm not used to arcade controls either.

It's tricky to keep that button under constant pressure with any fingers.

So my current tactic is to take my left thumb off the analog stick - to shift up into 4th gear quickly and keep it in that gear, and then put my left thumb back on the analog stick!

Sometimes I use the controller arcade style while shifting upto 4th, and then switch immediately back to using my thumbs.

    Pretty challenging game!

I wonder if I made a modified Playstation conroller, would it up my score!

Giving a bit of time to Dragon Blaze.
Never really gave it time before, but it's a great Psikyo shooter that I've overlooked.
The Mechanic to separate from your dragon is brilliant.

Any rumours that I'm wearing a silly hat and downloading Panzer Dragoon 1 for my Saturn right this second after reading comment are vicious half-truths which I refuse to dignify with further comment.

Sticking this in here for anyone playing DayZ. Not strickly retro but I know a few of the regulars here are downloading that silly big file as I type, so this seems appropriate-ish, sorta, kinda.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26271525/chernarus_big_png%20version.png

I still have the unflattened PSD too with all the layers, but that will take f***ing ages to upload on my connection. Little point bothering unless there's some interest in it there's little reason to wait for it to go up.

Bit of a WIP this. One or two extra features to go on it.

Yeah, Dragon Blaze is one of a series of games for the PS2 that can be bought for little money from eBay.fr or .de
It seems that lovely vert shmups had euro launches but on budget labels, and not in every territory, at least not in any sort of numbers.
As a result they are readily available on the continent but the sellers don't usually see the need to include countries outside their own in the auction.
Happily every case so far has been happy to ship to Ireland, so I have some cracking games now Dragon Blaze included, Castle of Shikigami II, Samurai Aces, loads of great ones often for around 5 or 6 euro, not including postage.

I'd love the Super Indiana Jones game for the Snes, better balanced than the often cheap deaths of the Super Star Wars series.

If you aren't playing Xenoblade then you really should be. I'm 60 hours in and can safely say it's by far and away the best RPG since Persona 4. You can stick Skyrim and Mass Effect up your arse.

Speaking of all this Twin Galaxies stuff I just watched that documentary 'King of Kong' last night, definitely worth viewing if you haven't already.

Played some Gaia Seed lately. It's one of the rarest japanese PS1 shmups but it's going for a fiver on PSN in the imports section. It's got a weird Darius vibe to the game what with the weird music and strange art design. It's also got one of the best/worst engrish intro's and endings ever.

Anyway the game is worth playing but I finished it on my first go with the bad ending (if you want the good ending then time out the final boss to get a second form). It's still worth playing to just to experience how bizarre the game is. Also the game has a recharging shield mechanic, yes like Halo does except in a shmup!

I've been playing FF8. With a mountain of arguably far better games waiting to be played for the first time. I don't know why.
