I lost any respect I had for Jillian Michaels when she started selling fat burners & all that shoite.
Not eating grains is the linch-pin of paleo so a huge difference imo.
You are right about all the additives, it's so sad to see such long ingredients lists :(

Wow really, she actually sold fat burning products? Not good! Don't know much about her but the book was quite good, it was a library copy so at least I didn't buy it :D

Yes she has her own range of supplements. Glad you didn't waste your money on it :)

I managed paleo on a date :) I had a chicken and bacon salad which was a little detailed to order "you don't want dressing? and no croutons?". Thankfully that was the waiters reaction, my date didn't bat an eyelid other than "is there something on the menu that you can eat?" and checking that it was OK when it arrived.

I'm not a fan of Jillian Michaels... the whole thing of the 30 day shred having no rest days does it for me.

That's great LoT, the date *and* the meal :)

We went into town today & the kids wanted to go to Lemon (pancake place) so I brought my own lunch. Wasn't turfed out on my ear as dh dreaded  But Jaysis my dd must have offered me a piece of her pancake 4 times!! I did have a very nice Americano though.

I had a lovely veg with my dinner - white cabbage (on special in tesco for 69c) finely sliced & fried in ghee with chopped spring onion, and s&p. Yum.
I had used the first half of the cabbage in melissa joulwans egg foo yung (with prawns) the other night. FAB!

Must try that egg foo yung DCD-am really enjoying Melissa's recipes. They've all been good so far.

So, Day 12 of the W30 here and everything going great. Feeling more energetic now. Not missing the wheat or dairy (well, apart from cheese-I do miss that tbh). Missing sugar the most-if any little craving kicks in it's for something sweet rather than a dairy or wheat hankering. Am pleased to say that I haven't given in to any fleeting cravings and am sticking 100% to the programme. Still no improvement in my sinuses but that may yet happen. Fingers crossed!

Shame about the sinuses SD, but fingers crossed...well done on your success on the W30.

Cooking away here - roasting veg to make a tomato sauce to go with 50/50 meatballs, same recipe as below but made in to 40 meatballs

    50/50 Burgers

    Burger:

1 pound (16 oz) uncooked bacon strips ** I used the ends and pieces from Trader Joes
1 pound (16 oz) ** she specifies extra lean, but I used 85%/15% grass fed beef (from Trader Joes) and it turned out fine
2 TBS Worcestershire sauce **nb not w30, maybe use mustard**
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1/4 tsp garlic powder

Place the uncooked bacon strips into the freezer for about 5 to 8 minutes or until slightly hardened. Cut the bacon in half and place into a food processor. Chop the bacon in the food processor until it resembles ground meat.

In a large bowl combine the ground bacon and the remaining ingredients for the burgers. You want the meat mixture very well mixed so mix with your hands for about 2 minutes.

Instead of making them into burgers, I made them into meatballs and cooked them on a rack over a pan (like one of those baking racks, that happens to fit in my sheet pan). I made them about 1/4 cup each and with the recipe doubled it made about 35.

Bake for 30 minutes (check temps) at 375 deg F.

I have have some sirloing in the freezer that I'm going to try make in to jerky...

and making a paleo treat for a pal.

ETA the meatballs were too bacony for me but family liked them
I've never had jerky before but I love it! First batch turned out great.
The treat, I had a taste, is FAB!!

What is jerky DCD? I've seen it mentioned quite a bit on the American sites.

What paleo treat did you make? Not that I'm in the market for making one during my W30 but just curious :)

I made the meatloaf again yesterday. It worked well as a "cook dinner early in the day & serve it later" dinner :)

I wonder how it would be with pork mince...

Jerky is dehydrated meat, usually with spices.

It's a good snack. I was going to try to make some this weekend from the Paleo parents book.

I make my own, but I actually think it's cheaper to buy it online!
Once I factor in the price of beef (always have to buy top quality) and the price of dehydrator running (which is mental)!! It is such a good snack and fills you up..

I was actually thinking of starting my own jerky business but with Irish laws, it's not really possible!

I've just been to my local butchers today and they're keeping me loads of pork crackling so I can make my own on the weekend! Great snack and I love crumbling it up into mince & burgers etc..

Does it make a difference if you do it in the oven? Where can we buy it online? I didn't even know what to call it in non-American English.

I used a €5ish piece of sirloin from Aldi. The price of running the oven on very low for a couple of hours would be very little no?
It's the coconut aminos that'll cost ya! I'm sure you could use some other flavouring instead though.

Sadly my second batch burnt :( the temp control of my oven if fooked. The flame come on super high and doesn't change at all until it's practically all the way to off....I wanted to do slow roast belly of pork but now I can't...need to find recipes that require gas mark 9!

I got a 39c head of white cabbage in Lidl today and made THIS tonight. It was yummy. I'm not sure if it is bloating me but that's a whole other story :)

I might make some coleslaw tomorrow with the yummy mayo I made today :)

Hey Aquila :) I have a source of nitrate/nitrite free pastured bacon. And yes, it is rashers :)

Sadly I do not, so I use decent quality sugar free rashers.

When I buy store bacon I too make sure there is no sugar/honey/maple syrup in it

My fav find to date is Tesco Finest Beechwood smoked dry cure rashers.
2 packs for €5, and 6 nice thick cut rashers per pack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 SummerDreamer

Must give those Tesco ones a try at some stage DCD.

Day 18 of my Whole30 here. All going well nutrition-wise though I am falling into the habit of sticking to tried and tested recipes so I need to shake it up a bit again. I started off making lots of things from Melissa Joulwan's list and had really varied meals for the first 10 days so I must go back and have another look at a few more of her recipes.

Feeling a bit headachey the last few days and not bounding with energy. Sinuses still very congested-disappointed about that as I thought they'd start to clear by now. I will plough on though as I am feeling other benefits, not least the fact that my clothes are much looser and my skin is looking great.

I was suprised to see bacon used to be honest,I was always under the impression its unhealthy!

The salt content is an issue when there is lots of occult salt from processed food in your diet. The nitrates/nitrates are not good, ever, but again eaten in moderation without processed & other inflammatory food they aren't going to kill you.

Ideally pork (and bacon) would come from pastured sources rather than shed pork. Unless you have large amounts of land & significant amounts of kitchen waste/green grocer cast offs you are unlikely to be able to fatten a pig without supplementing with grain but pastured with scraps and grain is better than completely grain fed shed pork. I eat more pork now than I would if I didn't know the source of it.

All quiet here. How's everyone getting on?

I'm on day 21 of Whole30. Not craving sugar these days-an amazing feat! I was still craving it for the first couple of weeks but haven't even thought about wanting anything sugary in at least a week. I didn't give in to the cravings in the early weeks so it seems to be paying dividends now. Takes a while to shake the sugar demon, but worth sticking at it!

Just a question re the pronounciation of Coconut Aminos- is aminos pronounced like 'vamonos' (or whatever it is Dora the Explorer says!) or is it 'a-meen-o-s' (like the way you'd say amino acids).

    Hi Summer,
It's like amino acid. Ameenos. I love the comparison to Dora. That's a language we speak around here!

I just discovered a great way for me to eat lots of cabbage, so i thought id share it here.
I was being my usual thrifty self and boiling a chicken carcass in a pot of water with spices, herbs, onions, garlic.
While this stock was being made i was also cooking my dinner which was a coconut chicken curry.

After straining the stock, i added more onion, garlic, other veg and herbs, spices.
Then chopped and dumped in a load of york cabbage i got for 29c in dunnes :)
What made it special in my view was i had my curry cooking beside my cabbage soup and had the idea to laddle 2 or 3 portions of the curry into my cabbage soup.
    Tasted amazing!
It was also handy for my breakfast and lunch the next day.
Alternatively coconut chicken and cabbage curry could be just as nice :D

If your dieting and trying to save money.
It was a winner in my view.
I got 3 meals from a whole chicken and 1 can of coconut milk and some veg.
Still have the chicken legs and wings left to use too.
