In fact it was so bad i'd recommend packing in everything else and just concentrate on striking practice for the foreseeable future!:D

I joke. Why not MMA though?

Crossfit gaymes 2013?!

That one where I'd done about 2 months of striking and never really sparred? Yah, was pretty awful. But I looked totally awesome spanking a bag. So, it would seem that you need someone to train with, spar with, or at least do pad work with to get better at striking.

...which brings me back to the original question, which you seem to be completely missing - I NEED SOMETHING TO DO ON MY OWN WHEN I DON'T HAVE PEOPLE TO TRAIN WITH. I already train 4x per week with people in BJJ, coach 3x per week and work a full time job. Where exactly would I fit MMA training into that. Seriously like.

And CF Games?! WHat?? AGAIN, I say...

"So I need something to do in those periods that will:

A) help prevent injury
B) not compromise the rest of my training"

Seriously, did you read any of the posts or are you just replying for the sake of it?!? Mate :D

I made an awesome post here yesterday but the interweb seems to have eaten it. The part about "looking flash and bags not hitting back" pretty much covered it nicely though.

I thought I was being pretty clear when I said I wanted something that:
1) positively contributes to my current training
2) helps prevent injury
3) I can do on my own

...apparently not :D:D

In that case there are only three things you could possibly do: paint the fence, sand the floor and wax on wax off.

I've already painted the wall of the gym.

I think solo training for BJJ is fairly low yield.

There are a couple of things you can do:
work flexibility and mobility, I presume you know more on this topic than I do so won't post many links but this is one http://www.youtube.com/user/Elasticsteel?v=ooJuL36tmAU

work judo style take down mechanics like this guy does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE-TFSCLUNw

do a warm up drill i.e. loads of shrimping http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIbGOBBqOPs&feature=autoplay&list=PL4B976DED6E625068&lf=results_main&playnext=2

work some basic movements focusing on projecting your weight the right way (e.g. doing top control trying to push your hips down) something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGltp-1qmZs or using the big ball something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKZkuls6XIw

do you do any rope drills like swinging them or climbing them? a lot of people recommend that for grip strength

• Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

Friday

Morning - 1 hour of BJJ

Evening - Rope climbs, med ball work, 1 hour of BJJ

Saturday

1) pull ups x5, inch worm x2m, push ups x10, inch work x2m - AMRAP 10

2) a nasty KB complex of;
-24kg OH, 32kg farmer
-32kg x5 goblet squat
-24kg x5 C&P each arm
-32kg x5 row each arm
-24kg OH, 32kg farmer

Effort of logging this sh*t.

Monday

BJJ - 5x 5 minute rounds with lots of recovery cos I'm absolutely dying sick, did some footlocks and kneebahs too, finished with 5 mins of guard passing.

Shoulder rehab - about 10 minutes worth

Logging is so much harder when there's no numbers to write. It would be much easier to skip ahead 6 months and just stick a montage in here instead.

Love a good montage.

ANYWAY.....

Saturday

Day 3 of Weightlifting Ireland Level 1 coaching cert

5km run in 26m 54s, average HR = 161bpm

(route was 2 laps, then loop up to JR and back down)

Sunday

Day 4 of Weightlifting Ireland Level 1 coaching cert

So I'm still sick. Had the heaviest man flu since Good Friday/Saturday. No idea what's going on but apparently my body hates me. Blaming that for the poor HR on the run. Felt extremely fresh regardless, could have gone for another 5km no problem. That bodes well for the Connemara Challenge.

Nogi BJJ tonight... Grapplepalooza (http://grapplerman.com/grapplepalooza-entry/) at the weekend, f*cking awful run up to it, but c'est la vie.

<<We're gonna need a montage... MONTAGE>>

Monday - 2 hours of BJJ

Wednesday - 2 hours of BJJ incl. 8x hard 5 min rounds

Did shoulder rehab both days and tonight. Grapplepalooza this weekend, nervy as hell.

<<hands up..>>

Friday - BJJ 60 minutes
-did some take downs, I'm definitely working on my double leg
-played a bit
-went to set up grapplepalooza

Before:
543639_10150826626365115_567805114_11730490_341823624_n.jpg

Saturday - Grapplepalooza
-weighed in a 90.8kg and got beasted

Lost 6-2, match went the full 5 minutes. I defended well and stayed safe but I was absolutely f*cking sh*t. Managed to score the first 2 points for a sweep, then got taken down, and then had my back taken from turtle. Looked back at the match video and am very p*ssed about it. Gave up on any form of tekkers and displayed no agression. Fairly pathetic!!

I'll put a full write up on my site when I get the official unwatermarked photos.

Me looking good:

The rest of the day was incredible and kudos to Barry for organising a great comp.

Sunday - Conditioning

Block 1: 20-15-10-5 as fast as possible
-Push ups
-Air Squats
-24kg KB rows

Block 2: 10 rounds
-band chops x10 e/s
-russian twists w/ 9kg med ball x20
-med ball slams w/ 6kg x10

Block 3:
-spider run x5 rounds w/ 1 person recovery

Had a detailed look at my log for the last 6 months. Been injured 20 out of 27 weeks in some way shape or form - 2x rib injuries, a knee injury and a couple of weeks of with a really bad bug. Pretty f*cking ****ty. Bit of a wake up call too.

It's always your answer. U need to jazz it up a bit. That guy felt stronger than me, should I skip wednesdays in the gi and start to focus on my strength more??

<<Now it's a good day...>>

Monday - BJJ 2 hours
-busiest class in Kyuzo I've ever seen, awesome
-did some arm drag take downs
-side control escapes (need to remember the pendulum)
-then did lots of rolling

Tuesday - BJJ 30 minutes
-rolled and did some tekkers after bootcamp
-really enjoying the spiral arm bar set up these days

Just a thought but since you're so fastidious/detailed/anal about your reps/sets when you lift/jump/run why aren't you the same about your BJJ logging? I write down details in my little diary all the time and a lot of the really good guys I know do likewise.

So here's what I have people do:
Weight pre-training
Warm up (feeling tightness/soreness etc.)
Training details/difficulties
Sparring details
Mini Rate of Perceived Exertion scale of 1-5.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've scratched my head wondering why a sweep or throw isn't working only to look back on the details and see I'm missing a grip or detail.

Yah it was mostly the time factor which stopped me doing that... Now I've more time, so yay :)

Wednesday - BJJ 2 hours
-I was very close to walking out of the gym, big probs to TD for talking me into staying. Nightmare of a session.

• Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

Nothing since Wednesday because I'm fat and other stuff....

Monday - Nogi BJJ - 2 hours
-attacks from turtle which I've honestly forgotten already... anaconda anyway, break the elbow, get deep, roll towards the overhooked side and walk around
-transition to the back by removing the overhooked hand blocking off their arm and getting double unders, lock the hips with the elbows and boss them around
-never let anyone connect their hands nogi
-if you get a seatbelt never release it
-then did some sit out drilling (break the grip hold the wrist, post on the free hand, sit to the over hooked side, hips high and drive back into their armpit after sitting out)

Concept 2
-pulled a few test strokes
-500m in 1m 23.8s
-died

Did I mention I own a Model E C2? :D

Tuesday - (p)rehab
3 rounds of:
subscap rehab x20
lunging rotational med ball toss x8 each leg
OH shrug w/ 24kg KBs x8
baby get up w/ 16kg KB x8 e/s
skater squats to one kick shield x8 e/s

Concept 2
-1,000m in 3m 20.7s

Ok, I'm back training properly now. No more bullsh*t. The row was about a 6 out of 10, very happy with the time as a starting point. Delighted to get some good quality rehab in after hashing out a plan with Barry yesterday.

I have no clue as to how to train for MMA specifically but you say you don't feel strong enough, why not increase the level of your bodyweight training for strength?

Please excuse any ignorance on my part before you answer :D

I don't feel strong enough because my technique and skill level is less than sh*t!! It's not actually that I'm weak, it's just that because my tekkers is terrible I rely on strength too much. So when a guy with good tekekrs and similar strength goes against me, or even inferior strength, I get crushed.

I've a nice little rehab circuit set up with the help of Barry as outlined in my previous post which I'm going to use for a few weeks as a warm up/cool down to get me in half decent shape and hopefully keep me injury free- that's priority number 1 at the moment!

Once I'm injury free I'll be on the mats more and hopefully drilling my nuts off (...wait )

Make sense?
