That's what you said about Houdini though!

Yes but it was decided that "Houdini" was an offensive nickname and using of such would result in infractions from what I remember. A similar decision was reached for the use of "Blind Dave", but only when I uttered it. There was no apparent problem with the use of Buckle and Kidinme.

Not really. When you look at the player pool we have, the number of top class teams, by definition our coaching pool will be very shallow and the level of experience they can gain; very limited.

Which is why I suggest that any ambitious young coach should go abroad to gain experience because there's little chance of gaining it here.

People simply refuse to believe Heaslip is magic, right?

I wouldn't read too much into it. Another 3 years and it could be all Irish head coaches at the provinces.

There's a good up-and-coming guy arriving at the Ulster academy next year - who knows, in a few years time he might get a shot at the senior squad?

    How droll.

My point was that there is no great trend towards foreign coaches, it's something that's always been present in the pro era. All provinces have had Irish and foreign coaches at some point or other.

And tbh, nationality shouldn't come into it when looking for the best candidate.

I thought we were trying to encourage running rugby.

Oddly enough, O'Gara used to be such a good passer he was quite good at bringing players in, anyhow, strange Horgan, who would know O'Gara well, would pick him out as a future coach.

    A try-free thriller.

Yeah - I'm going to go way into the left field here and suggest that Horgan knows ROG better than many of us, and also that he probably knows the requirements of professional rugby better than many of the posters here too. From that perspective, it's an interesting comment.

Looked like classic Munster rugby to me...

Yeah, I have to say he's never struck me as a future coach but you never know, Horgan wouldn't bother saying it if he didn't think there was merit to it.

Nah, O'Gara can only be backs coach at international standard. ;)

Having seen the Irish backs this season, I am confident O'Gara could do a better job than whoever is coaching them.

Yeah the Irish backline has been largely ineffective this year. Where did Horgan say ROG would be a good coach btw? I'd like to read/watch/listen to that piece.

Horgan rates O'Gara. During the 6Ns (RTE sideline pundit after one of the matches) he was advocating that Sexton be moved to 12 and O'Gara to start at 10.

Ireland scored most tries in 6Nations this year with 13. Wales were second with 10. France 8, England scored 6, Italy & Scotland 4 each.

I didn't say that our backline didn't take it's chances well because they did, especially Bowe. I'm pretty sure they did better with a bit of loose ball rather than creating very much for themselves though.

Mad he'd say that when he has to go and see d'Arcy every other day (or did). Not that he's wrong, it's worth looking at even if O'Gara should really retire.

It really isn't worth it, Sexton is the long-term 10, we need a long-term 12 and we even had one possibility on the 6N bench who was repeatedly snubbed.

Ok, now I accept this is left field but how about a Sexton/Madigan or a Madigan/Sexton partnership at 10 and 12 for Leinster and Ireland?

I think Paddy Jackson will go ahead of Madigan soon due to gametime and if and when it happens, O'Gara will call it a day.

A lot of Leinster fans have suggested that. I would be interested in seeing it. I think Madigan offers more in the 21/22 jersey though.

I know the lads joked about it on Off the Ball tonight but Shane Horgan may not be the worst nominee as a backs coach for Munster.

Has it ever happened in a game so far?

It'll be interesting to see if Hanrahan can follow Jackson's lead and force his way into the team.

Madigan did play 13 in the HEC QF for a little over 10 minutes
