See a Penney, pick him up, all season long, you'll have good luck.

If it rhymes its true. All Friends fans know that.

I can't but see the hypocritical nature of the IRFU's new foreign player policy in this. According to it we can only have 1 NIQ player in any position from Leinster, Ulster, and Munster yet it's perfectly ok to have no Irish head coaches in these teams (assuming Penny gets the job).

Interesting point. I will be interesting too to see if senior players retired from successful Irish provincial careers get opportunities to manage abroad before becoming candidates for the big jobs here.

It's a tough balance for the IRFU. Whoever has the Munster or Leinster gig, and from here out, the Ulster gig will be directly involved with the majority of the Irish squad. It'd be nice to have an Irish option there but it's far more important to have the best option there.

That isn't really comparable to the NIQ player thing. Munster would have been sunk this season (well moreso) without Wian and Botha, no if's or buts really, we needed NIQ props or the entire team would have failed to function.

Among the many challenges facing whoever comes in to coach Munster will be getting guys like Kilcoyne and Archer into a position where they could, if needs be, start HEC games, that's a long way off.

There are rules that say you can only have Irish qualified players playing for Ireland.

There are no rules that state you must have an Irish qualified coach coaching team Ireland.

Personally, couldn't give a shite what country a coach is from as long he is getting results.

I mean, it's a nice afterthought to bring on some Irish coaches but that's all it is.

Coach of any of our teams doesn't have to be Irish.

Players in our national team have to be Irish.

There's a massive difference. No need to strangle ourselves installing Irish coaches to our detriment if better are available elsewhere.

    It's Penney!

Rob Penney was today confirmed as Munster's new Head Coach
The 48 year old has been Head Coach of Canterbury since 2006, and last season took them to their fourth straight ITM Cup national provincial title. He also has Super Rugby coaching experience with the Crusaders where he was assistant coach in 2005 when they won the Super 12 title and he has maintained his involvement with the Crusaders as Development Squad Coach.
A former Canterbury Academy Manager, Penney will coach the defending World Champion New Zealand Under 20 side during next month’s IRB Junior World Championshipin in South Africa, and he is expected to arrive in Munster in mid July for the start of a two year contract subject to obtaining a valid work permit.

Anthony Foley will continue on as Forwards Coach while expected change in the rest of the management team will be finalised following consultation with the new Head Coach.

Commenting on the appointment Munster CEO Garrett Fitzgerald said, " We conducted a thorough search to find a replacement for Tony McGahan and were delighted with the calibre of the candidates. Rob Penney's record speaks for itself and we look forward to welcoming him to Munster.”

Penney leaves Canterbury with reluctant best wishes according to Canterbury Rugby Football Union CEO Hamish Riach, “Rob has been a great servant for Canterbury rugby. We are very sorry to lose a talented coach, but this is a fantastic opportunity for him and we wish him all the best.”

I'd just like to point out that I was first to coin "Penney's Finest". I shall be using it for all references to Munster in the foreseeable future. Lets just hope it won't be a sarcastic remark indicating the quality of our product.

    In for a Penney...

Anyone able to give a precis of how he likes his teams to play, rugby philosophy, ability to sign non-rubbish players etc?

Appointing Penney is a good move.

But there doesn't appear to be any word on a new backs coach.

That area is still a major weakness for Munster.

Well, the word is we're going to appoint someone with Penney involved in the selection, that is good news I'd think.

Fair enough. He'll obviously be giving it some thought then.

The big question is will he start making changes to the team next season?

This may imply that 1. the candidate does not need to be someone already touted as a possibility and 2. seeing as Wayne Smith turned down England, there is still hope of him coming to Thomond!

With all of the retirements and new recruits, he'll be forced to.

With his Academy background you'd think he'll have to.

Wayne Smith seemingly doesn't want to leave NZ as both his parents are quite elderly. Understandable and even commendable. Somebody get Rua tipoki on the phone.

Said it before but as far as I remember Dutchy is signed on for next season already...

EDIT: Until Summer 2013 I read on mfans.

He was signed on but maybe he's been moved to a different position internally or paid up and wished well.

I wonder will we hear the terms "by mutual agreement/consent" mentioned ?

This paragraph from Munster Rugby's press release is interesting:
Anthony Foley will continue on as Forwards Coach while expected change in the rest of the management team will be finalised following consultation with the new Head Coach.

Well done Munster, very good choice, was kind of hoping it would be Penney, you won't regret it. Very highly thought of in NZ.

I heard from a good source that Penney will talk to Costello about the backs position.

Why is it a bad situation?
