Just traded in games there Friday for credit with the intention of blowing it all today on a console.

    Sad day.

The store in Limerick is closed with a sign on the door saying, "This store is now closed. For further information please contact Game head office."

Ah thats crap, wonder what notice the boys got or were they just told when they got into work.

Found out about 10 mins before doors closed. Shame, as I know a good few of the guys there. Lovely guys, hope they get something sorted.

To be fair, staff probably weren't allowed discuss anything regarding the impending administration with anyone.

Most staff knew that it was coming, friend of mine who works for game was told by his manager last week that come Monday he should be prepared to spend the day queuing in the social welfare office as there most likely wouldn't be any jobs in the store anymore.

I'm certain they didn't know to be honest. I know many of them very well and they wouldn't have done it had they known.

As far as Limerick goes, it's the end of an era for gamers. I remember walking in there in 90's when they had a 50 inch crt showing the mindblowing power of the PS1 and Killer Instinct on the SNES! I wish the staff th every best and hope they all get sorted somewhere. TBH, their staff are far superior to some of the people working in their rivals.

As a company, it's pretty scummy encouraging high trade in prices before dropping this first thing on a Monday morning. They just put money on my loyalty card for missing two of my preorders.

I'd doubt the lads in the shop knew much more then the people on this thread. I'd be very doubtful if this kind of stuff got filtered down to the staff on the frontlines.

A sad day for me. Like others I hadn't spent a lot there recently but Game was the shop where I cut my teeth on buying games. Always my first port of call when purchasing games and consoles down through the years.

Beyond that it's never good to see businesses close and I just hope anyone that anyone working there lands on their feet.

I'm sure they didn't know. Sure my friend works in GAME and he didn't have a clue until this morning. I haven't heard from him since though.

Seems that it may be something that managers were made aware of and some passed on the news of possible stores closing to staff and others didn't.

It's obvious that these closures have been planned over the past week or so and for Game to still be taking money for preorders, putting trade in credit on cards and offering higher trade in prices than normal for some games is unforgivable. It's the kind of business practice that would put me off buying in Game were the stores to reopen.

It's incredibly sad (and somewhat pathetic) that some people are heralding the closure of GAME. If you don't like GAME, don't shop there, but please remember there may be people on boards who may be facing unemployment now or have lost money to the closure so comments of "good riddance" "they had it coming" etc are pretty stupid things to be saying. You wouldn't appreciate it if your company closed and idiots were celebrating it because they had some ridiculous gripe with a company because of prices you were never forced to pay.

The less competition there is in the market, the less the consumer benefits. People seem to keep going on about how HMV etc sell products cheaper, but now with less competition, there's no need for them to sell the products cheaper so in essence we, the consumer lose out here, even if we don't purchase in game. HMV etc now have less reason to undercut higher prices, so yeah its hardly great news that we're going to have to pay more for games now.

I hope the shop comes alive again as so many jobs will be lost from this.

Even though I havn't shopped there in years, I remember seeing Resident Evil 1 for the 1st time in there. Load of people huddled around the telly wanting a go but the guy working there wasn't handing over the controller (neither would I). He was looking well smug until the dog jumped through the window :pac:

I traded in 12 games in GAME Ilac centre and yer man even went out of his way to give me more than the games were worth. Didn't have ID on me at the time so I opted for store credit.

I was only in GAME in Blanch on Friday night mulling over what to spend the credit on but thought that I'd leave it to pay day... which is tomorrow.

Now they're all closed and I'm out nearly €100. I'm ****ing livid.

I dont feel very sorry for staff working there. I would if they were helpful, and gamers, but in my experience this is not the case. You can't work in a camera shop without knowing something about photography etc. so because GAME had a policy of hiring non-gamers to avoid staff discounts being used, tough luck really.

I'm of the opinion that as they only did this last Tuesday that they have effectively stolen my games... if anything that's all I want back.

    Bastards...

    Got a number for them?

Surely I'm due something back from the agent in charge of liquidating them if anything else...

You'd be miles down the list of people owed money. In all likelihood your money and games are gone. Sorry.

If I get so much as a sniff that Game knew they were closing today and yet kept asking their staff to take trade-ins at exaggerated prices as late as yesterday, I will be causing a ****storm of epic proportions.

    It's effectively stealing.

EDIT: When I say Game, I mean Game as a company, not the staff in the stores.

That's exactly what happened to me mate. The bloke in the store even went out of his way to extend a limited offer to give extra value to the games I was about to trade in... he extended this for an entire day just because he was expecting me to come back into the store.

As far as I'm concerned GAME just stole 12 of my games. If I had known whilst I was in blanch I would have used all of my credit there and then. It's deceitful of the company to have allowed this to happen tbh.

Good to see some people have common sense here regardless of the situation.

And whats the worst that could happen if they let a customer know GAME was closing? they get sacked? :pac: lol.

They should of let people known. I would have in their shoes. Fact is, company is going under, my job would be gone, who the hell cares. Even if the manager says "not too" - his/her job is gone too.

From their facebook page. Seems anyone with outstanding business with them like pro orders, gift cards etc will be shown the middle finger.

Nothing unusual in what they say though, happens whenever a business goes belly up really.

I honestly can't believe people got stung with GAME

I'm not being a dick but its been known that they were going bust the last few weeks now. So why on earth would somone trade something for store credit? (obviously greed is at play here. trade in a few games, get store credit, go down when sale is on ) But what happens if they suddenly closed their doors? which they did.

I suppose greed rules out common sense.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

Well I didn't, since the shops were nearly bare of stuff I wanted, went to symths instead. Still, its awful for the people employed there, and the people ripped off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Actually no I was trying to be a smart consumer.

I had a few games that I wanted to trade in and I gave them to GAME as they were offering me the best trade in price over Gamestop and CEX.

How's that my fault for being 'greedy'?

Oh wow, new reg doling out advice  Before you start judging people, I was going to get a PSVita from them. That's the same PS Vita that I could get way cheaper online.

And I even told staff on Friday that I was trading ME3 in with them so they could have a copy to sell on.

So take your  and move on.
