the tempered glass is just an aesthetic thing really. there are a few drawbacks of possible dust, and more glare if you play near a bright light or window, but it looks nicer. to get an idea, look at the iMac screens. it looks professional.

It might look professional on an iMac but most people on OCN that have gotten it say it looks quite cheap and have recommended against it.

Lads this is a quick question so I'm not going to start a new thread for it.
I need 2 x 2TB hard drives, but I don't know which brand is reliable or even where's the cheapest to buy them, any help?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Samsung Spinpoints. I have two of the 2TB drives myself, and they're excellent. Very quiet, and decently quick too, for 5400RPM drives. Dabs have them for around €115, IIRC.

Sounds unbelieveable, right?! I know their prices are good but thats crazy.

just how wobbly is the stand, and what do FPS games look like? any tearing, input lag or ghosting images?

Stand is basic, comparably in sturdiness to a cheap 1080p monitor (i.e. not very but does the job).
    0 dead pixels.
Wasn't really sure how to test input lag or ghosting. Dragging the mouse cursor across a white background causes it to lose sharpness and slightly blur but doesn't leave a trail.
Tearing is visible with high montion in BF3 with Vsync disabled, but doesn't this happen with all LCDs?
I didn't touch the default refresh rate.

Monitor was marked with a $30 value so no VAT due.

What card were you using it with?
Tearing isnt something ive ever experienced on any 1080p monitors ive used.

if you dont have v sync on tearing does tend to happen a fair amount of the time with lcd's

    5850.
It wasn't particularly bad - only visible when there was rapid horizonal motion. And my brother couldn't see it when I explained what I was looking for.

I think he got it from dream-seller.

Box was labelled EMS. I'm not sure what delivery service it was handed off to here though.

how long did it take to get here?

The group buy is looking to take 6-10 weeks, and i dont have that much time unless i use my old 19" 4:3 1024p monitor for a few weeks... not gonna happen.

im going to place an order in tomorrow for a catleap.

€280 from dream-seller now... so damn tempted, but I think I'll hang on to see what pans out with the OCN group buy thing (although it will probably never happen).

lads, is there much difference between VGA and dvi/hdmi connection in terms of visual quality? my main monitos is still on VGA :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

    Yes! Move to DVI now!

Maybe it's just me having a bad VGA cable or something, but everything looks blurry when using VGA. It reminds me of using a CRT monitor, or an old TV or something. DVI will give you pixel-per-pixel accuracy.

Your existing monitor doesn't have any digital connections? How old is it?

I don't really care, TBH, but I'd think with a computer worth €1,000 or whatever a DVI cable would kind of be a given. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

You're converting twice if you're using a VGA connector. Once when the graphics card converts from digital to analogue and another time by your monitor in converting back to digital.

TBH, there's not a huge difference in what I've seen but it probably depends on how good the conversions are. Still, it's unnecessary degradation of the signal.

that my main monitor. back in the day i bought it to be a second monitor, because my main was 1650x1050 on old dell. so i took cheapest one...

looked in to it now. was thinking maybe getting second 570 and one decentish 24inch monitor, so later on i could buy 2 more monitors to get 3 monitor setup. it would work out same as buying a gtx 680 now and be stuck with **** monitor.

then again i read in to that 2x570 are not great for multi monitor setups... ffs...

My advice? Buy a decent-ish monitor now that you can get two more of later*, then buy one of the 4GB 680s (or two) when they come out. BF3 and probably some futures games are real RAM hogs, so it'd be nice to not have to worry about it.

*There's the €100-ish BenQ ones on HWVS if you're really stuck, or you could go for something like a 2412M (like I've been thinking of ever since I heard the 680 can support four monitors).

    would 150eu buy a decent 24insh monitor?

    so if:
    150eu -monitor
500eu -7970 ( looks like its still way better for multy monitor setups )

    sell gtx570 200eu?
    sell 22inch monitor 50eu?

300eu 2x monitors later on and enjoy lower settings tripple monitor goodness?

    or

    300eu 27ich 1080p monitor
    280eu gtx 570 for sli.

    300eu 27ich 1080p monitor.
You could get the 1440p monitor for €280...

that contraversial monitor from somewhere in Asia? nah thx... 300eu wont get me decent 1440p monitor in EU land.

though which would be cheapest 27inch monitor so 1080p, because i wont be able to run 1440p on my gpu.
