Great description amongst the tears and the other guff ...some heartfelt some not

"Thanks to the PFT crew for keeping the content coming during Wednesday’s special edition of PFT Live, which featured a live stream of the press conference regarding the Colts’ decision to release quarterback Peyton Manning.
Much can be said about the event. For now, I’ll focus on the comments that got lodged in the officially-licensed PFT bovine excrement filter.
Both Colts owner Jim Irsay and Manning said that the decision wasn’t about the money. Which means, as it always does, that it was about the money.
And it was. Required to pay Manning $28 million very, very soon and forced to carry a $17 million cap number in 2012 for a guy who may or may not be healthy enough to play in 2012, Irsay had no other choice. If the number had instead been, say, $10 million to Manning and a $7 million cap number, Irsay likely is inclined to keep Peyton around. Somewhere been the two extremes there was a go/no-go line.
For Manning, money was an issue because taking less was never an option. Delaying the due date for the $28 million by even a week was never regarded as a possibility, because Manning never showed the slightest willingness to do it.
The money lines were drawn last year, when Manning’s agents installed a plutonium pill into his new contract, forcing the team to pay or get off the pot before the launch of 2012 free agency. Period.
So, yes, it was about the money.
Just like it will be about the money, at least in large part, when Peyton picks his next team. No matter how many times he says it isn’t"

I'd never call today guff, what Indy meant to Manning and what Manning meat to Indy can never be overstated. And I suspect Manning will choose whatever team offers him the best package, that is control, personnel additions and coaches. It won't be about the money, within respectable reason.

The Jets have already inquired as to whether Manning would like to play for them.

I don't think the Internet could handle Patriots vs Jets, Belichick vs Rex and Brady vs Manning all in one game twice a year, potentially three times a year.

Don't see the Jets happening...just don't think Peyton would fit their mentality....and then of course him and Eli in NY would just not be worth the hassle!

Since they're completely different conferences and likely wouldn't play each other baring a Superbowl -the next time the Jets play the Giants is 2015 - I'd think the Jets are more likely than people who put alot of weight into the Eli-Peyton thing.

The big reason the Jets are maybe #4 or #5 on the pecking order is because of their cap and Peyton's supposed dislike for going to a big media city.

I never mentioned anything about them playing each other!

Not playing each other completely takes the sting out of being in the same city, and if anything it creates a thousand more promotional possibilities for the pair. It's not like they're not constantly asked about each other as it is, him playing for the Jets would change next to nothing in that regard.

Agree with this, though it would be publicity dynamite if it happened. I think a factor being overlooked is Manning's preference for a dome, or at least for a warm weather location. After 13 years playing 8 games a year in the Indy dome I can't see him going to some outdoors northeastern team like the Jets and having to endure the winter there.

NY media is a complete different kettle of fish compared to other markets, slightest thing would be picked on, straight off the fact Eli now has more rings would have them licking their lips!!

As for not being asked about each other.....as much and all as last season was an exception, Eli spent a portion of nearly every interview answering questions about Peyton!

The more I think about it, the more I believe the move suits Manning's ambitions. Manning wouldn't win another Super Bowl with the Colts. Why not get out while it looks like the owner's decision.
I don't believe for a moment this is what Manning wanted in tthe grander scheme of things (he'll always be a Colt to us, and to himself IMO), but he had to take the chance to take a trade to a team with SB aspirations.

We're not going to offer anything like the amounts Miami, Kansas and Washington will and are only enquiring more than anything. If we offered something, it would be largely conditional. One thing that has also gone unnoticed is that Manning and Tebow's agents work for the same agency, it's a conflict of interest if both are at the same team. If manning goes to us, it's because he's picking a playoff team over a few dollars extra. We'll give it a go but we're pissing in the wind tbh. If he doesn't end up in KC, it's a moral victory and i'll be happy enough.

On top of all this, Bill Williamson is saying that Tebow and Manning absolutely will not coexist and Tebow will be traded if the deal does go through, not sure how i'd feel about that.

Speak for yourself. I'd rather the ****ers didn't catch us on Superbowls. Going back to what i was saying earlier, i'm beginning to think that we're interested but don't expect it to happen, so we're playing along in the peyton sweepstakes as a smokescreen to let us go after other targets. Mario Williams is at a basketball game in Denver tonight, for example.

And Ochocinco was at a Heat game recently so that must be a sign that he's going to join the Dolphins!

Ocho has said on twitter for a while that he's a fan and is good friends with Lebron supposedly, he's been to a game or two before. Cavs aren't exactly the most glamorous team ever, nor are the Nuggets for that matter, and Williams comes from Carolina and is living in Houston, can't see why he'd go that far out of his way to catch a game?

    Oh god I was messing!

He easily could have just been visiting friends, skiing, promo work with sponsors...wouldn't read too much into it...especially since the waiver wire only opened this evening, if he was around the Broncos before that it'd mean trouble for both!

Promotional work perhaps, and his agent could have told him to stir the pot a bit by going to an event in an NFL city. Sad that Williams will likely be pushed out of Houston because of the cap when he's been such an fantastic player for them and is so relatively young, it feels like the sort of bond that could have become one of those enduring relationships.

Broncos aren't a runner at all, honestly. They're building and wouldn't be ready for Superbowl run in the next couple of years with or without Manning. If they have a meeting it's all about focusing Tebow's mind rather than nabbing Peyton.

Somebody talked about this on ESPN and the Tebowmaniacs have this very wrong and i believe you have also

    - Tebow achieved great things last season but we also saw his limitations , he can be the Broncos starter but he could do with learning more
    - He was and never will be Elways pick so there isnt the emotional attachment to the pick
    - Elway is not stupid enough to replace Tebow with a capable back-up or a Jason Campbell....he is probably the only person in Denver with the stature and esteem to carry off a big move and even Broncos fans couldnt argue with a Hall-of-Famer arriving

I would say a move for Manning is very much in Denvers' minds. With Washington , Miami & Seattle prepared to throw the bank at Manning nearly sight unseen , they may not get him . One NFL GM confidentially said that the problem will be slowing owners down so that they dont sign Manning without due diligence so it may be difficult with such a hard chase on. Stephen Ross at Miami has instructed his GM not to discuss Matt Flynn until Manning is finished signing. The Redskins wont contemplate RGIII until Manning has signed somewhere either . Tebow isnt Elways guy and Tebow could sit behind and learn. Denver could have a SuperBowl and have an heir apparent .

Affection and respect for a focused athlete like Tebow who will only improve shouldnt blind Broncos to what a Hall-of Famer could do with Damaryius Thomas and Eric Decker.

Whilst i would never say that the last few months for Jim Irsay , the Colts and Peyton Manning would be free of emotion or that the press conference and the talks that preceded it would have been free of emotion that isnt heartfelt , the guff i speak of is two grown men saying "its not about the money , it was never about the money " when it was always about the money .

In 2010 that large contract that was signed was entered into by Jim Irsay was agreed to due to the fact that Peyton Manning was a future Hall of Famer , a SuperBowl winner for the Colts and proven star quarterback . He held the leverage and forced Irsay to pay close to $60m in 2 years and close to $90m in 3 years. If anything were to happen to Manning , injury, falling out with the organisation, being replaced with a youngster or whatever...the poison pill clause to pay the $28m roster payment by march 9th was so big....and before the draft and free agency that it would force an owner to either cast him free or pony up

So it was always about the money ....heartfelt emotion not-withstanding

Oh i know, but was just speculating.... i know it would but these things do happen, i believe Kansas got in trouble for going after Peyton on the sly?

Well reasoned.... we do want to stick with Tebow imo, we're not going to get Peyton if it means ****ing Tebow off somewhere else. If we could sell him a Montana/Young or Favre/Rodgers scenario i'd think we'd be well in on it, if it means trading Tebow we wont, i think Elway has enough of a level head to think that we'd be quite stupid to mortgage off the future in tebow for a couple of years with Manning returning from a long layoff. We'll give it a go, but possibly as a smokescreen and we're nowhere near as invested in the idea as Washington, Miami or Seattle are.

I will say this, i'm immensly impressed with how Elway, Fox and Xanders are running things in the front office for us after only a year at it, were we to orchestrate Manning coming over and Tebow sitting in the reins to take over as an established prospect(maybe offer manning a job as QB coach after it?) it would be a stroke of ****ing genius.

Manning I doubt will coach after he finishes up playing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

The Broncos simply don't have the personnel to attract Manning and they're pretty stupid if they don't realise that themselves. Thomas is still as raw a receiver as they come and Decker's potential has yet to be fully explored. A run game anchored by Willis MaGhee doesn't exactly make the blood rise, nor does a line and a coach built to run the ball, not pass it. Manning wants a team that's ready to win with a QB and the Broncos are not that. Manning won't want to step away from the potential of a QB controversy into Tebowmania, and however better Manning obviously is he'll be asked about Tebow every second question from now until the first game of the season.

Tebow's starting the first game of the season too and just about nothing that's possible can change that. At best they'll bring in a Chad Henne/Matt Moore type of player to compete, but that's pretty much the Kyle Orton level anyways. The Broncos aren't spending big bucks on another QB when Tebow's contract is already a big portion of the cap.

How about Manning and Tebow co-existing? Manning plays the 1st 58 minutes of the game and then tebow takes over for the final 2 minutes to pull out a win or get to practise throwing under no pressure!!! :D

    best of both worlds!!

just play 'em both. Use Tebow as a full back/quarter back. Manning can release to him for runs or throws - moves Tebow out of the pocket into a bit of space which we know he can exploit and gives Tebow a couple of years to learn off Manning AND Elway.

Haha this would be worth paying to see. But this is professional football and not the circus!
