    We've already arrived there
Nah we haven't. Those things about "person-hole" and "baa baa rainbow sheep" etc are untrue. They're just products of people who resent the fact that racism shouldn't be tolerated, so they make that sh1t up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,952 ✭✭✭aujopimur

If you had described it as "she's black" you'd have been rightly bolloxed.

How about 'manhole inspector' for the gay men folk?.

We all know your joking and it's funny.
Now who in their right mind is going to scan the bloody classifieds looking at words that may be deemed racist if you twist it in that light.

I'm a little curious. OP, what did you say to the woman on the phone when she told you that?
What did she suggest, if anything, you might replace the word "black" with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,037 ✭✭✭Plazaman

The advert went basically" black Honda 80 for sale, runs well 1998 model original black paint work with low milage, all offers considered phone #########".

Too right, a disgraceful un PC advert if ever I saw one.

Black - Obvious racial undertones implies as has been already covered here. By stating it's black you're implying it runs faster

Honda - After what happened in Pearl Harbour, i think it's awfully insensitive that you try to gain monetarily from such an event

80 - Ageist it may be as someone mentioned but why put a number on it as this places a bias on all Honda 50's, 100's and 120's

For Sale - Well this takes the biscuit. It's this type of capitalist propaganda that has started civil wars around the world and also led to the property bubble bursting in Ireland leaving the country in a vicarious financial state

Runs Well - Of course, see the first reference. All you're missing is the London 2012 Logo.

1998 Model - Sexist and downright degrading to "fashion display artists" such as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. We all can't be size zero no matter what year you refer too.

Original Black - Bible thumping at it's best and brings up the whole creationism vs evolution arguement. Black is black. When Johnny Caveman invented black he didn't say this is original black then I'll have new black and then classic black (incidentally Johnny went on to work for Coca Cola but thats a diffrent story).

Paint work - Don't know if this is a dig at the unemployment rates in Ireland or going back to the freedom of EU Labour movement implying that it's OK to eat a swan once you have a tin of Dulux in your hand.

Low Mileage - Whats wrong with Kilometers, we didn't join the EU for the good of our health. Even though Kilometerage isn't a word, that doesn't mean it can't be used.

All offers considered - Well, well, well only offers are considered. So if i made a bid, a tender or an agreed cash sale, it wouldn't be good enough? Holy silver spoons batman.

Phone - Ah ya say no more, we know what that implies.

######## - Hash, hash and more hash, keep your drug references out of the local print media, it's a family paper I'm sure and we still like to listen to the soothing tones of The Angelus at 6pm with nothing but a cup of tea to soothe us thank you very much.

And that's why I won my International PC Award four years in a row (2008 - 2011)

Where did that 'Call a spade a spade' saying come from anyhow? Is it referring to people with a dark complection or the tool somewhat like a shovel!?!

Actually, I do recall a woman ringing up one of the radio phone in talk shows in the late 90's complaining about the term 'man-hole'.

We get an old laugh out of the times we used take it out, sentimental reasons, surely you did something like this in your teens or have you lead a sheltered life behind a keyboard.Actually lent it to a friend 5 yrs ago when his car got nicked.

To another poster when she called me from the paper I was in work and completely put on the spot I actually couldn't believe it.
She suggested leaving the word out entirely or having a think about it to submit it without using a colour.
Now that I think about I should of lambasted her but I was having a good morning and just said whatever I will take my business elsewhere whilst pointing out it's an insane policy.

You're starting to sound like the woman who called the OP :P

It is what it is and white people seem to be better judges of racism against other races than the races themselves.

Over in motorbike forum one night we were discussing our bikes and someone complained over us saying saying Jap

    What's wrong with Jap?

A Honda is a Jap bike

Unlike the OP's story, this one is actually true
Maybe that was one I was involved in too.

I once referred to a 'Jap bike' on boards.ie and someone near took the head off me!.

Didn't Pat Kenny get in trouble for using the word Jap a couple of years ago?

you could call the colour 'Midnight'

I got chastised by a middle-aged irish woman in a queue at my local coffee shop last week for asking for a black coffee. Its coffee without milk. She proceeds to order a 'white coffee'

Cosmic Black number 37. The blackest black in the world, that should do it.

But really, that just sounds silly. Does she think a black person is going to look in the paper and say hmm, I think I might look for a moped, oh heres on, hold on, black? this ad is RACIST! cause it spelt out the WORD black...

    D'ur, I think not.

    Silly PC Ireland.

I was putting an ad in the paper to sell a yellow dinosaur, I wasnt allowed to because it was racist. Also, various other cliches happened during this phone call.
