Putting a conspiracy hat on for a second, could the pricing strategy be a rather crafty move designed with the precise intent of shifting the remaining HD6850/70 stock quickly? :)

ivy bridge isn't going to have much over Sandy clock for clock. I imagine it'll have massive OC headroom though cause it runs so cold on that die shrink. probably looking at an easy 5Ghz.

wonder how the trigate will affect the OC though?

my 6990 is my bottleneck in my rig, but somehow I still want an ivy.

Making room for an amazing cost/performance 7800 series? That would be very nice thought, but I think AMD just need the money to prop themselves up overall.
Still, it would be a good strategy if that was the intent as most people at this stage looking at that range would go ahead and get the 6850/70 that they'd been looking at.

Lads, I'm looking/thinking about a new case, specifically to house a large water cooling setup. the 600t just isn't designed to take much more than a 240mm rad.

i need to house a 360mm radiator (or bigger) + 240mm rad, internally.

problem is, i don't want to spend much more than ~€150 if possible, cause then I'm cutting into the budget for the water!

i suppose €200 would be the upper limit.

I'd also like it to have a window (or ability to install one)

can it be done? I'll be making a big order with HWVS in a few weeks, so its OK to buy from there.

    any suggestions?

Just so you know with some small mods you can fit a 360 rad and a 200mm rad in a 600t :) I can find a link to one if you want?
There is a new nzxt case that would fit the bill perfectly fo you:
The Nzxt Switch 810. I really want one but dont have a reason to build another rig at the moment.

thanks ill check that case out. yeah I've looked into the 360mm mod, but some people would see that as a devaluation of the case, and I'm only going to be able to upgrade If i shift this case.

i don't have a dremmel either, and not sure how good I'd be with it :P

You can look at my case, if you can find one for a decent price. It'll house a 360 and a 240 natively. If you get the right kind, it can also house two 360s either.

Failing that, you could look into a HAF 932 / X, as they're very similar internally to mine.

In a similar situation myself and for around that money it is hard enough find a good WC case. There will be a few concessions/altercations to be made for a 360mm and 240mm rads.

One I was looking at was the Xigmatek Elysium. Gets a good review and its good value for money at that.

What do you guys think of the Corsair 400R/500R as competitors to the Define R3? I haven't seen one in person myself but a lot of people are recommending them in other forums.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

The 500R is a nice one for GPU-heavier builds, I think, but I'd go for the R3 for aesthetic reasons. Now, the 600T vs. R3 would be a tough choice for looks, but price sort of decides that.

I've got the 400r, and it is keeping my card and cpu very cool, there's a lot of room for cable management and I think it looks very nice, though a few people disagree. One thing though; the stok fans are a bit loud, I think I'm going to swap them out for some Gentle Typhoons.

Funnily enough I can't stand the look of the 600T. Its just too cartoony for me. I do like the look of the 400R though, and its cheaper than the R3.

One thing that really annoys me is that very few sites do a sound + temperature test when reviewing cases. I'd love to get a practical comparison between them.

Slightly offtopic, have you seen the new Lian-Li case, with side mounted HDDs:

Interesting concept but I think it looks a bit cluttered as the column is set over the motherboard and components. Too close to it I think

Yeah, it looks cluttered but it works surprisingly well:

With the conclusion that its too expensive for what's there :pac:

Yeah, but thats the same for all of Lian-Li's stuff. They make really good cases and then charge 50% too much.

Reminds me of my first case. The NZXT Temptest. Server-style mounts

    http://personalpages.tds.net/~wilykat/DSC05058a.jpg

The sound/temp testing (or lack of) is something I find annoying as well, but what can you do?

The layout looks very nice and clean with lots of features. But the Define R3 is just so quiet. If the 400R was maybe €5-10 cheaper or if someone didn't like cases with doors, they'd be definitely a good pick. If you were going for more extreme overlocks/hotter equipment and wanted better airflow, it would have the advantage too.

if a case isn't painted on the inside, I'm not interested. that takes out 90% of lian li's stuff. theyre far too overpriced for what they are.

the 600t is so far ahead of its competition in its quality aspect, and I'm not saying that cause I own one: I'm probably going to sell it for better a water cooling case. it's just a great case to work with. everything is so well engineered that its hard to find a case that doesn't disapoint me in some way.

I've built a rig around an R3. its pretty quiet, but you pay the price big time in temperatures, to the point that I wouldn't recommend SLI or CF without removing the 'moduvent' which defeats the purpose.
it also has sharp edges and exposed raw metal where they clearly took shortcuts.

the only quality upgrade I see over the 600t is the Cosmos 2 and a few silverstone ones.

Since you are so happy with the 600t and looking for a wc case would you not consider the 800D?

its too old. if they released a revision with updated internals I'd consider if.

I just thought I should throw a post in here to give anyone thinking of getting a Corsair Hydro H100 a quick heads up! I was delighted with both itss cooling performance and its noise levels for the first couple of days. Temps never went above 50 on IBT (CPU isn't OC'd yet). However after a couple of days I started to notice what can only be described as a grinding noise coming from the pump. A quick search on Google (really should have done this before buying!!) shows I'm not the only one. Despite the noise its cooling ability never changed. So to cut a long story short, it's a great cooler performance wise it's just a question of luck as to whether you get a faulty one or not.

where'd you get it? what CPU?

dont most people RMA it when they get that noise?
