There is an episode from TNG where Picard has to go to a planet with an alien and try to figure out how they speak as the UT couldn't pick it up, turns out it was the way they spoke, in story form if memory serves.

That wasn't a problem with UT though, as Picard was hearing the language in English. It was how they communicated, rather than constructed sentences, they used met-A-phor

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I loved that episode. Just watched some of it there (thank you Youtube), and still really good. TNG, when it was good, was really bloody good.

My random query is why Security never beamed to places on the ships when there was danger. As in, enemies on Deck 3, so just beam to nearby. Or at the very least, why did they walk everywhere? I can rarely think of anytime during an emergency that they ran.

One thing I didn't understand about the Universal Translator was why the language always was in English, apart from the odd phrase that would appear in the species natural language, Klingon for example. I'm guessing the idea was that each race spoke their own language but the UT would translate it into a language the listener could understand. If that is the case, how come certain phrases would still be spoken in their native language? :)

I just took it as there are certain phrases that lose their meaning if translated, or just can't be directly translated. Sort of like how english speaking people might say 'je ne sais quoi' or 'deja vu' rather than translate to 'I don't know what' or 'already seen' *. Perhaps the universal translator either ignores those phrases (an idea I don't really like) or is programmed to leave such phrases in their original languages.

*My translations may be completely off there.

2 and 6, followed by 4 for me.

I love 6, but watching it last night, there's some ridiculous ST5 type stuff happening.

When a phaser is fired in the galley, the Lieutenant educated the Commander that it sets off the alarm. Then the communications officer runs in wondering who fired a phaser, followed shortly by the chief engineer

Why all of a sudden, finished with quoting space dock speed regulations, was Valeris suggesting sabotage in order to disobey Starfleets orders to return to spacedock, & why did Chekov & Uhura, 25 year veterans, not think of that first?

Why was Kronos 1 in a position where she could be fired upon by the Enterprise, Enterprise was on an escort mission & the ships should have been either led by Enterprise, or at least side by side. But convenient that she sat belly up in front of the torpedo bay.

Wouldn't Kronos 1's sensor logs show the Enterprise hadn't fired?

Wasn't it Excelsior that was cataloging gaseous anomalies? Why all of a sudden did Enterprise have 'all that equipment used for cataloging gaseous anomalies'?

The security of the Klingon border was laughable, letting an unidentified ship speaking broken Klingon, proceed to Rura Pente.

The security of the peace conference was also laughable, with Kirk & co being able to beam right in & nudge his way up to the President.

Why were there no Klingon ships in orbit of Khitomer, to protect the new Chancellor? Why were there in fact no ships in orbit barring Enterprise & Excelsior, both of who were uninvited, that could have helped out?

Why was there only one prototype bird of prey that could fire while cloaked? The design worked, flawlessly.

Why did the Klingons not see & remove the viridian patch on Kirks back when he was arrested? How did the Klingon prison warden know which Kirk was the changling before shooting?

The film, although a feast to watch, is riddled in such questions

The lens flare will creep up on you when you least expect it.....

In all fairness there has been much worse. I don't want to watch ST: The Motion Picture again for a very, very long time. The ending made absolutely no sense whatsoever, it was like they were just making it up as they went along.

Is it me, or was the only proper ending was for Kirk to offer himself to V'ger?

If by lens flare you mean like a light sort of constantly reflecting/shining/blinding you in so many shots, I noticed that too. It was a bit annoying at times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭JBnaglfar

The lens flare overkill really annoyed me, it was so unnecessary. I did just come across this on youtube though. :P

Started to watch "Threshold" last night which is a season 2 episode of Voyager where they try to reach Warp 10 and the episode ends up with Paris and Janeway mutating into some sort of amphibians and mating.

I only watched the first 10 or 15 minutes until the mutation started in Paris as this still irritates me. It's a really good story idea (reaching Warp 10, being everywhere in the universe at once) and so on, and they completely f****d it up and/or got lazy.

I mean, they could have saved that idea for the end of the series to explain how Voyager finally got home. Or they could have just went a different direction, focussed more on the science, the explanation of what it was like, rather than going down some unpleasant boring mutation story line.

Really annoying that they grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory in that one. It annoys me so much that I would feel fully justified in copying the story idea and writing my own version. :)

So I was watching "Rivals" (DS9) recently, and you know the gambling device that eventually caused all the trouble on the station? The drunk had it in the cell, and the drunk gave to the conman Mazur shortly before he died.

Assuming that Mazur took it from the drunk after he died and he concealed it from Odo, presumably Odo saw Mazur with a strange purple object as he was releasing him. Would he not have seized it and investigated further?

I know most of the episode can be explained away by saying that the gambling device did it. Apparently the device was that powerful, so powerful that Odo glossed over that particular detail - Odo never ignores even the smallest of details. The laws of probability should have been affected so much that the station probably should have just blown up on the spot imo. Not the kind of false jeopardy that fills out an episode that ran out of steam halfway through!

And even then, given the Federation's advanced scanning technology wouldn't the detainees be scanned and searched thoroughly before and after being detained? Just to make sure that any contraband might be detected, or something?

    Just finished watching The Captains

Shatner - Very honest, especially with Stewart towards the end.

Stewart - The man is pure class. I could listen to him all day long.

Brooks - Lol, I see now what others were talking about. To look past his eccentricities, he's very cerebral. Very introspective. Very intimidating still, because you don't know if he's just odd, or he's answering a question in a way that's totally over your head. I like him though, I'd say he opens up more to those he knows a lot better than Shatner though.

Mulgrew - Very nice, open & honest lady. I never knew she was a single mother through Voyager. You can see she had it tough

Bakula - Very likeable, sound chap it seems. For a man touching 60, he looks damned well!

    Definite worth a watch

I'm not so sure about Stewart being pure class now. Have you seen the vid where he brushes off a fan at an after show signing? The way he did it was somewhat courteous but it was a bit prima donna-ish, all the fan was asking was for him to sign a photo of him. You could tell Stewart was tired/p1ssed off doing all that signing though.

Those videos never have any context though. Stewart, I'm sure you'll agree, is entitled to have bad days like the rest of us. The only difference is we don't have cameras following our every move :)

I watched " the hunted" recently from TNG. Theres a violent, genteically modified killer who has just escaped from the brig roaming free on the ship.
Security is on full alert, but that's no reason for Worf or any of the security teams to move any faster than a casual stroll

They do that in Voyager as well, one episode called Drone shows the security team meeting 7 of 9 and they all walk to a science lab where they believe Borg to be.

So why did Voyager's nacelles need to move before going to warp and need to move back down again when out of warp? Why not just fix them in the up position when they built it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 873 ✭✭✭somuj

How about having Harry kim a fresh out of starfleet ensign and Tom Paris(on temporary release from the pen) on the senior staff? Even tho the crew is made up of far more senior officers with years of experience.

I don't think there is a reason besides the effect of making Voyager look more advanced without having to point at many different things.

Because it looks cool. No other reason. It was just a toy for the CGI guys.

New ships tend to have new crews. They needed Paris for navigating the badlands. And a fair few of the senior staff die in the first episode such as the chief medical officer and first officer.

I think it's a bit unfair to have a go at having a green ensign and an ex criminal on the bridge. Everyone around here gives TNG a pass but they had a Klingon, an Android, a pair of boobs and a child on the bridge. It's all relative. :p
