This has angered the conservative religious elite - a key power base for any Saudi ruler.

Now, one of their number - well-known academic Kamal Subhi - has presented a new report to the country's legislative assembly, the Shura.

The aim was to get it to drop plans to reconsider the ban.

The report contains graphic warnings that letting women drive would increase prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce.

A Saudi woman who has campaigned for women drivers told the BBC that the report was completely mad.

She said the head of the Shura had assured women campaigners that he was still open to hearing the case for lifting the ban.

Wtf? How many Irish women have been prone to prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce since they were allowed to drive?!

sounds like the old tampax advert which said using them let women ski/ride/swim and so on,am all for there being the choice for women becoming hookers/porn stars/gay/divorced if they want to but not all of us aspire to any of that sheiite.

It's probably true that letting women drive will contribute in some tiny way to the end of virginity. It will not be enough on it's own, but it will be one of thousands of tiny steps that could help to make them feel a little more empowered which eventually will lead to the questioning their obedience. On a more practical level, they can now reach a wider array of men!

The real question is why is this bad? Why is the end of virginity in Saudia Arabia a bad thing? Why should these adult women feel obliged to remain virgins?

From the little I know about islam I read this a found it funny whilst agreeing with it - may I stress again that I know little about Islam.

That boils down Islam. They fear nothing more than losing virgins. They kill for virgins. They die for virgins. They enslave women to keep them virgins. They kill women who lose their virginity if anyone other than her husband takes it. They rape non-muslim women to preserve muslim virgins.
But it isn’t the virgins themselves islamists kill, die, enslave and rape for – it’s for the chance that they may be the one to take a woman’s virginity, either on earth or in paradise.
The entire cult is based on death and sexual satisfaction. Only in islam and in mental illness does the two merge.

im sure if you took a trip up the mountains at night be it weeknight or weekend you'll almost find a group of girls in a car "hanging" with the lads.
