This has angered the conservative religious elite - a key power base for any Saudi ruler.

Now, one of their number - well-known academic Kamal Subhi - has presented a new report to the country's legislative assembly, the Shura.

The aim was to get it to drop plans to reconsider the ban.

The report contains graphic warnings that letting women drive would increase prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce.

A Saudi woman who has campaigned for women drivers told the BBC that the report was completely mad.

She said the head of the Shura had assured women campaigners that he was still open to hearing the case for lifting the ban.

It's probably true that letting women drive will contribute in some tiny way to the end of virginity. It will not be enough on it's own, but it will be one of thousands of tiny steps that could help to make them feel a little more empowered which eventually will lead to the questioning their obedience. On a more practical level, they can now reach a wider array of men!

The real question is why is this bad? Why is the end of virginity in Saudia Arabia a bad thing? Why should these adult women feel obliged to remain virgins?

From the little I know about islam I read this a found it funny whilst agreeing with it - may I stress again that I know little about Islam.

Saudis have a long anti-human track record. This isn't the worst they've done.

Only 60 years ago they still kept slaves, 20% of the population was slaves in the 50s.

It's not driving that's the issue, it's what goes on when you're parked. And for me, learning to drive didn't threaten my virginity so much as ensure that it was extinct.

Well, a quick poll amongst my friends indicates that a lot of the women who drive aren't virgins, so perhaps there is a link there. Of course, most of the ones who don't drive aren't virgins either.

From this I conclude that letting women drive, and banning women from driving both have serious implications for their virginity. The only logical solution is to just ban women.
