I like a nice cosy comfy interior especially in the winter months nothing cold and drab. I want a good selection of craft beers on tap and lots in bottles. Try to keep all the taps on show in operation, hate bars when you ask for something and there out of it, very off putting. Some TV's for the footie. Good tasty simple food/snacks. Nice toilets which are kept clean. All that and id be a happy man.

A 3.50 pint of either Tuborg, Bavaria, Olm, Fosters, Carling or any other lager
    fast service
    plenty of seats
    No riff raff

    Physical impossibility

Irish Times, for the Simplex crossword and Sudoku.

    A good pint of Guinness.

    A Dartboard Area.

    High Definition for the Sports.

    Craft Beers.

    Local bands on weekends.

    Minimal chart music.

    Customers who actually buy pints.

    No door policy on footwear.

    Pleasant bouncers.

    Not wedged.

barstaff as friendly as i was when i worked behind the counter

decent pints, some places the taps spew poison. the variance of quality of guinness pub to pub is shameful.

    decent toilets

    pool tables are important

    smoking/beer garden

decent music library on the jukebox

    decent special offers

and a good selection of beer on tap. back home none of the pubs have bulmers on tap which is why i stopped drinking cider.

good bands regulary at the weekend.

2 types of pubs that id frequent.

    1) When on a day session:
    - Clean bar and friendly staff
    - Clean Jacks
    - Sport on the box
    - Cheap pints
    - Peanuts/ jackets
    - Pool table/ dart board
    - Comfy Seats
    - Low playing music
    - Heated smoking area
    - Ban on iphones and general ****e like that (ruins plenty of good arguments)

    2) Saturday night session:
    - Clean bar and friendly & quick serving staff
    - Clean Jacks
    - A good atmosphere
    - Plenty of women
    - Baskets of food
    - Plenty of drink options

This is all great when sober, once a few pints wet the lips the above really goes out the window!!

    Naked wimms. End of story.

(While working in Bolton, England I used to frequent a theme bar where the female staff there were semi naked. Gawd I miss that place!) :D

i'm a barman and working (bored) in a bar with 2 customers at the moment.
just wondering wat Irish people look for in a bar
    i.e decor, price etc...
For me I like a bar not too modern but not shabby.
    Clean toilets are important.
As long as the price of the pint (I drink lager) is under a fiver i won't be too worried.
A nice simple food menu including a selection of Bar snacks (Wings, Gougons etc..).
Plenty of Tv's for sport (its so quiet in here I have Crocodile Dundee II on the big screen).
Would use any tips that'd suit the bar but in general just lookin to see wat other people think

I would imediately find a different pub.

I cant stand TVs in pubs. Ok, its understandable if theres a match on but if there isnt, turn it off. nothing more irritating than just random crap on a TV in a pub, especially on a big screen

    No TVs.

This, so so soooooooooooooooooo much. Many, many people want to go to the pub for a conversation, not to have British soccer (the usual offender) blaring on TV screens across the entire pub night after night. Talk about colonising space, peace and destroying the quality of life of so many people. Peace, quiet, a great chat with friends and a decent drink. Is that really too much to ask? Apparently it is.

I look forward to the demise of all the offending pubs, and the rise of tv-free pubs like The Gravediggers.

    A nice open fire.

Music quietly playing in the background.

    Good prices for a pint.

A barman capable of pouring a decent pint where the head doesn't completely disappear in seconds.

    WI-FI

    Clean toilets

Give me that and I'm happy

    That was me,

Any sort of a decent enough pub, with NONE of the previous posters in it, or outside it either ;)

Im a real 'auld fella' in terms of what i look for in a pub and always have been.
I wont go into a pub with door staff. I wont go into a pub which wants to be a night club. My ideal pub is one with no telly, no radio or music (other than the odd acoustic band / trad sessiun on a week end.), your dog is welcome so long as it behaves and so long as its clean and the pint is good and fairly priced Im happy

You just half described my father's local, which i love.

    I'd describe it like this:
-TV in the corner for Sport.
-Open Fire in the other corner
    -Lovely Pints of Guinness
-Old style, hasn't been changed since the 80's at least :o
    -Crisps and Peanuts
-A few late pints if you're lucky
-Barmen that you can have a bit of craic with.
-Pool table, dart board and juke box in the pool room (separate from bar)
-Always a few characters in, day or night.
-Smell of cigarettes from the pool room strangely enough...;)

Perfect except for the Jacks, they could be better...

lighting in a pub is so important and lights need to be carefully monitored, tweaked and dimmed up and down depending on time of the day to help create the right atmosphere. Candles in pubs in evenings make place really cozy too.

Jaysas that reminds me of a pub near by which isnt big but regularly has 3 or 4 Tvs on different channels, a duke box and a radio all going at the one time. Needless to say i dont go there. Its migrain inducing and facking stupid!"!!!!!!

A nice pot of the above :P

The option of toasted sandwiches. 3-4 options in fine. No other food. (Apart from the stew.!)

Good Smithwichs. Good beer on tap. Any pub with bad pints should be shut down. No excuse for bad pints.

The option of a Local brew/Craft beer is nice too.

Papers (Decent mix of tabloids & Broadsheets)

Clean Toilets. Clean behind bar. Clean everywhere in fact. Within reason.

    Max 2 tv's. Preferabbly smallish. 21" max.

Interesting photos/Art on the walls. To be summed up as plenty of character. Preferably through many years of collecting and gathering rather then Celtic Tiger Pub decor.
Photos of local events, local sports teams, national figures, recent history, past history etc..

A nice mix of passing trade and locals. Always makes for good conversation and atmosphere.

    Friendly & efficient bar staff.

    Free TK lemonade splashes.

re introduce splash. Im sick of paying nearly 8 quid for a spirit and mixer. The Thomas house in dublin has it, why not everywhere
