I know if my boss told me that they'd like me to work tonight but they weren't going to pay me because they'd come up with the ingenious idea that they'd make more money by not paying me, I'd tell them to go duck themselves!!!

    ... and you'd be right.
Work for free and you're a fool. No dig towards mods but Boards is making money. Mods maintain boards.

Only fair they should get something.

They don't do it for payment, or power.

It's about giving something back to a website that has been good to/for them. I was a mod on another site a few years ago, I got a good deal of satisfaction from knowing that I did a good job & was helping to protect the site.

It's also about being recognised by the Admins/Cmods as being someone who is trustworthy, reliable & fair minded. The 'job' comes with a lot of responsibility and it's harder than most realise.

I thought the mods did it for the coke and hookers?

What is wrong with me, when I read that I instantly imagined a can of coke and a boat...

I was just about to post the very same thing :)

I'm a Hmod to a forum where there is never any trouble, and a friendly atmosphere. It more or less runs itself, only needing intervention to add members, and other basic things. It's really no trouble but it's nice to be able to help on a site you use regularly.

It's also about being recognised by the Admins/Cmods as being someone who is trustworthy, reliable & fair minded. The 'job' comes with a lot of responsibility and it's harder than most realise.

Even at Hmod level it is nice to think someone thinks you're trustworthy enough to help out, and I'm grateful for it too :)

In public fora, especially the bigger ones would be more problematic. I think the likes of PI, Soccer, and AH mods must have the patience of a saint. You'd have to be on the ball all of the time, and the thanks they get is constant gobshytery and abuse from trolls. Everyone has a run in at one time or another with a mod, but they're just doing a job to make the place run smoothly.

Boards mods are not the best in the business. The sort of person who likes to volunteer their time for a commerical operation.

We don't volunteer; in fact if you volunteer it means you aren't up to the job. Entry is by invite only.

There will. And it really is a thankless job. Most mods do it because they have a genuine interest in the forum and have the forum and it's users best interest at heart. Some mods are dicks but must aren't.

A lot of work goes into the busier forums and mods have to walk a tight rope between keeping the users happy and Admin happy. Sometimes doing both is impossible.

I for one think 99.9% of boards.ie mods do a fine job and should be appreciated for the hard work they put in so we can enjoy a smoothly ran community.
