Yay, more idiots who invested foolishly.

I can't help but smiling now when in the height of the celtic madness, others smirked at me for not investing in property, pensions or port folios. :)

    Dublin Mom -

France increases its reduced VAT rate from 5.5% to 7% in 2012

    7 November 2011
The French Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, today announced plans to increase the reduced VAT rate from 5.5% to 7% from January 2012. Read about French VAT compliance here.
Essential foodstuffs will remain at 5.5%. Other goods, including food provided in restaurants, books, public transport and repairs to domestic dwellings and cleaning services will be liable at the new sales tax rate from 2012. The current French standard VAT rate will remain at 19.6%. The 5.5% reduced rate was originally created in 2009 to help stimulate the economy in the face of the world credit crunch. There had been some speculation of a rise in the full French VAT rate of 19.6%, but it seems likely that this will be delayed until after the 2012 Presidential election.

VAT rise as part of French austerity measures
This proposal comes as part of a range of austerity cuts following the latest Euro currency rescue agreement. Other measures include bringing forward to 2017 an the increase in the official retirement age from 60 to 62. The aim of this package is to reduce the current state deficit from 5.7% to a balanced budget by 2016, and help preserve France's prized AAA credit rating with the international debt markets. The French state has not run a balanced budget in over 30 years.

Dammit you're too quick for me! :)

Call me old fashioned but if I had 500k I wouldn't entrust it to anyone else to "invest" for me.

5.5% and 19.6% depending on the item.

Personally I think there should be a third rate here on luxury items... i.e. 13.5% labour ... 21% general products ... 30% chocolate, playstation, other luxury items... (or that sort of scale)

I mean why would you have the same VAT rate on shoes (which are a necessity) as you would have on a games console ?

For the day thats in it, shouldn't today's show be dedicated to the proposed VAT rate as it effects EVERYONE rather than covering what is pretty much a niche topic?

Not everyone was in a position to make poor investments during the good years. This topic alienates the vast majority of Joe's listeners I would imagine...

Well in fairness, it is better than it was...up til several years ago, female hygeine products ahem, were classed as "luxury" items...I mean, did women have a choice not to buy them??

So basically, investments can go down as well as up?

Thats not exactly new information is it?

Mary:"I'd like to see criminal charges brought against someone, I dont know or care who just someone, and I think the Central Bank should get spanked for allowing me to invest my money in any scheme I wanted".

Go to bed Mary, and stay there.
