I remember Richard Bruton saying when he was opposition Finance Spokesman that "you can't tax your way out of a recession". Which is true, any First Year business textbook will tell you that...

What the hell are they playing at?

    Its madness.

It is a crazy decision to increase VAT, but the Govt have said they won't increase income tax, money has to come from somewhere...

When is the budget? Need to get the Christmas pressies sorted before it.

Our budget is December 6th, though the Germans have been having a good laugh chatting about in in their pubs the last couple of days.

I like Noonan and Bruton, but I am disappointed with this decision. It is very short sighted.

Could see the brits pushing their VAT up next year too...

The French just put up VAT as well.

Great tax on the little people again, while the actual wealthiest (in France) pay less.

I'd rather they increased income tax. At least you have the option of budgeting appropriately. Its harder to budget when every item of expenditure goes up.

FG said that because they were trying to win the huge floating middle class vote that was leaving FF at the last election. Kenny promised no rise on income tax on them, instead he loads VAT unevenly onto those who can least afford it: the poor. They didn't vote FG so they can go fcuk themselves.

Look i hate FG/Labour as much as the next guy but why can't people get the fact that we are'nt in control of our finances anymore. It's over folks Enda and Co have no control of our spending or taxation.

That's not strictly true. They CAN control WHICH taxes they increase.

    Dublin Mom -

France increases its reduced VAT rate from 5.5% to 7% in 2012

    7 November 2011
The French Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, today announced plans to increase the reduced VAT rate from 5.5% to 7% from January 2012. Read about French VAT compliance here.
Essential foodstuffs will remain at 5.5%. Other goods, including food provided in restaurants, books, public transport and repairs to domestic dwellings and cleaning services will be liable at the new sales tax rate from 2012. The current French standard VAT rate will remain at 19.6%. The 5.5% reduced rate was originally created in 2009 to help stimulate the economy in the face of the world credit crunch. There had been some speculation of a rise in the full French VAT rate of 19.6%, but it seems likely that this will be delayed until after the 2012 Presidential election.

VAT rise as part of French austerity measures
This proposal comes as part of a range of austerity cuts following the latest Euro currency rescue agreement. Other measures include bringing forward to 2017 an the increase in the official retirement age from 60 to 62. The aim of this package is to reduce the current state deficit from 5.7% to a balanced budget by 2016, and help preserve France's prized AAA credit rating with the international debt markets. The French state has not run a balanced budget in over 30 years.

Agree, but from a Govt point of view this hits everyoone, employed, unemployed, elderly etc...Kind of a subtle way of reducing sw payments perhaps?

It is actually in the control of Enda & Co, anything else is government spin. We have to make certain savings or tax increases that is obvious, but where exactly they are made is the sole decision of our government. The troika only have to agree its viable. The troiks never said to put up VAT, its decided by the government, the troiks OKs it.
