just to add to the debate
A close relative has invested €60K in prize bonds for the past 12 months and has consistently got cheques in the post all €75, becoming a bit of a joke if she does not get her regular cheque at this stage. So far €2025 in 12 months. DIRT free too...... interesting to see how it continues this year

I calculate an anualised interest rate of 2.92%. Not too bad and DIRT free.

If they'd put those 25k's down on basically any AIM share especially the oil explorers after the craziness last week and sold out today or later next week though?

Interesting thread been watching for the last few months and going to follow:D

If you don't mind me asking how did you purchase the prize bonds?

Bank draft of 25k to an post or how did you do it.

I was thinking of putting in 10k in.

    Sorry for the stupid questions.

    How can you say that?

I could say what if he had put the funds into the AIM shares before the 'craziness' of last week and lost a packet.

There's more craziness to come so buckle yourself in...

Hi. Yes that's exactly what I did. A bank draft from PTSB and posted it off with the application form.
Other than the remote possibility (very remote! look at previous post where the calculation was done!) of winning, you would get more leaving it on deposit in KBC or some bank like that. In practice I'm losing approx. €600 a year from interest alone on this amount. But sure, I've decided to leave it for a year (Feb 2012) and then see what to do! Maybe I'll open a poll for this question :-P

I see they're putting the winning prize bond number on the ad on telly now. They must be reading this thread!

We put €40k into prize bonds for 6 months last year and won €75 on around 4 occasions. The amount of money invested in these is huge in my opinion. I agree that €25k isn't significant in terms of the size of the fund.

As inflation is likely in the near future your "investment" will lose value unless you get lucky.

Great feeling when I logged into my bond tracker account yesterday. €75 draw won on Friday, which puts me just about evens for the year on €3K and in reality I am ahead as its been only 4 months.

Incidently, it says to claim the prize I have to contact them at their address enclosing the winning bond certificate. I thought a cheque is sent to your registetred address. Can anyone advise on this?

    Prizebonds bought January €2.5k
    Winnings €75

€75 won two weeks after PBs were issued and nothing since then. what a shame :(

Surely that applies to shares and not PBs

From the Faq on the site.
How do I know if I've won a prize?
All prize winners are contacted following each draw. In order to maintain confidentiality and security, correspondence is sent in plain envelopes. Unless you request otherwise your prize winnings are automatically used to purchase new prize bonds in your name.

To ensure that you can be notified of any winnings, it is important that you inform us if you change address.

Prize bonds are not exempt from inflation. :)

Why do you say that because all the advertisements on tv say you get back the face value of the prize bonds and plus my brother is qualified in tax and says they are exempt.
