I was tempted to push but knew it wouldn't be worth it in the long run. I was happy with that time but its still 13 seconds of my best time. I'm going to try setting the damper down to 3 or 4 and see how I go next time, if the arm starts to act up I'll have to give it a rest for a while.

I'm in the same boat [not intended] AV!

I never did a 1k or a 2k as it was all done outside on the water.

However my best 500m was 1m23 and my best 30mins was 8722m - so just a little bit to go to catch up...:D

I reckon you have a better chance of setting a new pb!

Where is the issue in the arm?

Well I am not 100% about the SR - though it was definitely 30 at the end, and that was an increase in pace. I know the first few - where I was trying to find my level - were 24/25 anyway. After that I focused on holding the split to 1.27.

Will give a 100m a go soon - 100m doesn't bother me whatsoever - so will see what sort of leverage I can get. The question is whether I push the damper to 10 to draw more off the upper body for it or not...

And what sort of rate to target.

The arm issue seems to be a mild "golfers" elbow. The odd thing is, I can do chin ups using a neutral grip but if I do chin ups or pull ups using any other grip I can feel the arm start to ache. If the rower had a neutral grip I'd be ok :D

I'll just be taking it easy for a while but it's definitly improved over the last few weeks.

I know JAK has a forearm issue.
My right rotator cuff is a bit tired/fragile and have had tendon issues in the elbows.

The obvious thing is the more you pull with the arms the more you feel it - loose hook grip on the handle, as loose as is feasible anyway!

A lot of rowers tend to have a slight lean back at the finish and draw/pull the handle up just above the sternum.

The other day I was pulling it into the sternum or just below - great fun as after about 15mins I felt a bit queasy and had to tell myself to stop hitting me! LOL

    This am - 1413m in 5mins - 19spm average - 1m46.1/500m! Easy - not really!

JAK - 1m27 is a great time - your pb is 1m26ish? Even 30spm is low for 500m so if you could maintain 35spm the time will tumble!

I would not set it at 10 - I think Rob Smith - big guy - world record holder sets it to 7/8 so that should be perfect imo.

Just one obvious point - always do a decent warm up before a hot attempt on the erg.

It does put a fair bit of pressure on the core, lower and upper back etc. so best to be warm before going hard.

100m target for Dom & JAK - 16 seconds dead would be very good and if you get into the 15 second range - it's really very, very, very good!

My PB from the 1990's - 14.9 seconds.
Paul B - did 14.7 seconds this year!

I've been reading up about using the rower properly I've improved but my spm is normally between 30-35. I read somewhere (possibly here) that height can matter I'm about 5'3, I'm not going to compare my times/spm to guys that are 6'+ but when I'm at 30spm it's annoying close to being in the 20's and I just can't get there without the time suffering more than I want. My times aren't great, I don't think there awful either, nowhere near as good as people posting here I don't remember what my last 1000m was but I did 500m intervals the last time and my times were something like 2.45-3 which could be improved.

I make sure to use my legs and alot of the time I have my eyes closed, my spm and time improves with my eyes closed. As far as I can see from reading this and other things when I concintrate(eyes closed) I do things right.

I'm really just wondering should I try improve my spm get below 30 and then focus on improving time or should I stick to 30-35spm and try improve time.

At the moment I'm not really sure what I should do and as a result I don't think I'm improving as much as I can.

I had the same or very similar tendon problem in my elbows, but Barry showed me an excercise which seems to have solved it.

Attached you see my gimpish paint doc of the setup. Simply hold the broomhandle/bar in both hands and turn in your hands to wind the wieght up to the top, then unwind it and repeat. It hurts, alot...but it works over time.

We actually did this between rounds last night

It's actually not that bad now. I've been pretty good not doing any thing that causes to much discomfort. Thanks for the picutre, I'll try set up something like that later. Should my hands be facing up or down?

Palms facing down. I do BJJ so gripping the Gi causes tonnes of pain on my tendons after a session, by doing this regularly I don’t get that pain half as much.

I'll ask Barry and see if he will do a video

Fair enough will give it a go. 100m shouldn't mess with my session much.

Will leave damper at 6/7 - but I presume this is going to need a very high stroke rate - which is not my strongest point at the moment...

As for my PB Guv - I really don't remember a 500m best - but I presume 1.26ish. Keep in mind that my 1.27 is the wrong end of 1.27 for getting to 1.25 soon. As for your 1.23 - no. I remember you then, and I don't see myself getting to that time anytime in the next few years!

My weight is down a bit now to 16 1/4 - and I reckon I could hold at 16st even for a good balance of cardio fitness, heavy endurance lifting and out and out heavy stuff.

Orla - the height is not a major factor in the spm. I do however know what you mean.

Whilst getting the technique correct - do not focus on the splits/time just work on a nice fluid stroke.

If you watch the videos in this thread they will help. You can definitely get the stroke rate down to 20.

Slow forward and fast back is all you need to focus on for now. Keep arms out straight until legs are fully extended etc.

Let us know how you progress!

Famous last words! It won't effect you straight away but if done right it will!

Just go short on the legs only a few inches - just enough to get momentum! Watch your back though - do warm up!

It will be logged on concept 2 in your old logbook if they can find it for you. IIRC though is was 1m26.7 or thereabouts so you can take this soon and probably 1m25 as well.

There is a technique for the 500m - basically fit as many strokes in as possible with decent technique!:D

Blew up after 17mins, chugged my way to the 30mins. Lots wrong (SPM, food intake this morning)

Gonna do 1000m time tomorrow afternoon, and then a few intervals.

Blowing up is imo perfectly acceptable and a necessary albeit painful learning curve.

Well done on pushing through and completing the piece!

I've watched all the videos here, sometimes more than once. I love numbers (loved maths in school) so it's difficult to not think about the splits/time too much which is kinda why I close my eyes. I think my main problem is going to fast forward and not having enough power in my legs to go fast enough back, I'm pretty sure I got the arms/legs motion going right, my legs always feel it more and I always row after I try to do chins(my upper body isn't up for much after those so I tend to notice when I have to pull more than I should)

I'll hopefully be in the gym in the morning I'll see how I get on.

    Well today was interesting!:D

I checked the drag on the machine I normally use at between 3-4 and it was 106.

Moving it to 6 increased it to 125.

    5 was about 110-112 iirc.

    Anyway I did 4 x 1000m pieces with 4 minutes rest:

    1. 1k - 3m30.5 - level 5 - 23 spm
    2. 1k - 3m29.6 - level 5 - 24 spm
    3. 1k - 3m34.0 - level 3 - 24 spm
    4. 1k - 3m30.5 - level 5 - 24 spm
Not really happy with these - it seems mentally I am weak as in:
    • 1st 250m ok
    • 2nd 250 not bad
    • 3rd 250m  oh no, 500m left etc.
    • 4th 250m better than 3rd but still a bit weak.
My back is super tired and pumped from all this erging and I can really feel it in the mid to upper region!

Then I decided to faff around a bit and do some 100m pieces.

These were rubbish - rating 65 and I was out of time with the stroke if that makes sense and the chain was going slack etc.

    1. 1st - 16.8s
    2. 2nd - 16.8s
    3. 3rd - 17.2s
On my normal machine the half moon bit of plastic which keeps the slide and flywheel attached is missing - cue machine nearly coming apart in the middle on 1st 100m piece and me then moving to another machine.

I think the next 100m pieces will be done with a longer stroke (relative) and stroke rate of 40-45.

Short session to end my C2 escapades this week.

Back at it on Monday. Plans for next week 10k, 30mins, another 1k attempt plus 500m intervals.

    Any update Orla?

You have enough power to go back at the necessary speed.

We are not trying to go back as fast as possible - hard to explain really but everything should be fluid - one smooth continuous movement.

I too am a fan of numbers but the newer C2's take the fun away what with their predicted time/distance etc.

    Less than 2 minutes
So had to move around sessions for this weekend so went to gym today to do Chest. Did a little stretching and then thought maybe I would have a go at the 100m time before heading down for the session.

Did 2 x 100m slow just to set my form ... then went at it ...

    Set at 7 : 100m (3rd) time was 16.6 - timing off.

    at 8 : 100m (4th) time was 16.3

    at 10 : 100m (5th) time was 16.0

Ten seemed to be where it was at - but I had to weight down the rower.

at 10 : 100m (6th) time was 16.3. This was the one that would have been sub 16. Stroked down to 1.16 (lowest over all sets) and kept below 1.20 after 2 stroke start... until lifting half off the seat in my eagerness, losing it completely, reefing the handle into my chest and just about recovering to finish.

at 10 : 100m (7th) time was 16.2. This one I felt I had to slow down to stay on the machine - problem was that I just couldn't get it down to a low split quick enough.

At this point I was cursing you Guv and went to do my session. Which was mostly hindered by the belt I gave myself on the 6th sprint. And yah generally I felt it - not in the same sickening way as a few 500ms or a 1k, 2k - but just a bit drained and a few tweaks in core (obs mainly) and hamstring.

Finished up and on the way out was passing by the machine and figured I might as well.

    Set to 10: 100m (8th) time was 16.0

    and once more ...

Set to 8 (maybe this will work): 100m (9th) time was 16.4. Wrong direction - time to go.

What have i learned? Mainly that the issue is a lack of resistance in the machine (as it seems) and the difficulty of cranking into the low splits very quickly (maybe 200m would suit me better!). Lungs, Legs and Upper body can manage the sprints no problem - the issue is just that even at 10, I can't get to the sub 1.20 splits quick enough or hold them at say 1.17 at a stroke rate where I am not lifting off the machine.

    JAK.

    Awesome work JAK!

Imagine me trying to rate 65 and I'll bet yours were much better! You were rating what more around 35-40?

Two 16 dead at either end of the session.

I agree with you on getting the splits down fast - in his 100m world record Rob Smith (115kg or so) hits 1m03 after about 4-5 strokes, don't ask me how!

Also he had two people pushing the machine down at the front and two with their feet on the legs at the back.

I think this makes a difference as they stop the machine moving and hence all your energy goes into the time rather than moving the machine etc.

Others put the machine up against a solid wall for the same reason!

My 16.8 is technically an Irish record as no one else has entered a time in my age category!

Dead impressed - did not think you'd hit 16 dead so 'easy' - I should have said 15.5! LOL

You probably need to hold 1m18 to get 15.9 - what with the start and all!

    Yah about 35-40.

Really the problem is that if everything was locked in place (me included) I am sure I could crank it down a fair bit more, but will have to see what i can do about that. When I slow the rate to stay stable it becomes very hard to grind out lower splits (lack of resistance being how I describe it). How low can people go on a 30-40SPM? How low on a 25?

I reckon if I focus a bit on technique and getting a more explosive catch on 10, then it might improve - but no doubt I could get in the 15's on a 2nd go. More than that would need much more speed.

That will all have to wait though - at least a week - as I can't wreck my sessions!
