    Indeed.

However claiming to be "sent be God" inevitably leads to one claiming to be "Carrying out god's work"

    These situations rarely end well.

Yes, from those with a strong belief to those who chirp 'I'm a spiritual person'.

So what? Their religious beliefs form part of their political beliefs, most people have some religious beliefs. A person's political position if formed from many different influences.

One of the things that Rick Perry did just before launching his bid, was to throw his arms up in the air, declare the problems facing Texas (which he was the governor of) were insurmountable and the only way to fix them is to rent out a huge stadium and pack it with people so they could all pray together. This is despite the fact that he was governor for a long time, was warned that the policies that he was in acting would lead directly to the deficit (they were uncannily accurate with the figure too) and did absolutely nothing to prevent it. Perhaps he believed the prayers he was saying himself were enough and only later realized he hadn't achieved the critical mass of prayers needed to actually enact a sound fiscal policy.

The sad thing is that he is one of the better GOP candidates. Bachmann is absolutely bat**** crazy, rolling stone did a really good article on her which is well worth reading.

The reason it matters is because if these people tried these same stunts and held largely the same beliefs they currently hold but without any religious backing, they would be ridiculed and instantly dismissed. But because religion plays into a lot of their policies and political beliefs, they are taken seriously and there is a credible chance that the person leading one of the most powerful countries in the world, for instance believes in being servile to her husband and that she shouldn't even have a say in what career she picks and yet believes asking for the political opinions of the person pulling her strings is sexist. Or that there is a plot by the American treasury to replace the dollar with the Chinese yuan or has gained a well deserved reputation for just making sh*t up.

I mean this in all seriousness, if somehow I had a choice between any of our current crop of candidates (none of which I'm particularly fond of) and Bachmann for president of America (a position of considerable power, especially compared to what they are currently running for), I would take any of them over her. Even considering how uninformed about our lot I am, they really couldn't be worse, incompetent would be a large step up.

You can be spiritual and moral without being religious.

    Chirp, my foot.

Ron Paul is claiming he was sent to do dog's work (someone's gotta go for the dyslexic religious nutjob vote, also capitalising on dog the bounty hunter's redneck fanbase)

irony is that America was a country started by people who wanted separation of church and state, look what its become now, where being openly atheist is a political death sentence, gotta appeal to the bible belt or you wont get elected.
