Sadly no pic but I saw 86-MN-1 yesterday, a dark grey Merc 190 but it looked like a 2.3-16v. Anyone know a bit more about it?

I just don't understand one thing: which dummy parked that Dino like this? I wouldn't be surprised to see this car on wreckedexotics.com in the future...

Is the car (Dino) not parked in a marked area? Either a loading area or a parking spot?

Great to see someone taking the effort and expense of fitting a more correct number plate to the Beetle rather than the dreadful looking black and silver version of the EU plates.

But being really picky about it, I don't think that the font used is correct, looks like that used in the UK rather than the fonts which were used in the ROI.

    Or am I wrong?

Do I have the correct plates on mine? (Its an '86 reg and when I got it the owner had modern plates on it...the ones with the Euro symbol)

Saw this this lovely looking 912 in Dundrum/Kilmacud on Saturday:

Being pedantic you don't, the font size is too small, but they are not too bad. You could get away with raised letter black on White on the front and raised letter black on red on the back, though they wouldn't look as well as silver on black do.

That style and size of font was only introduced in 1987, and I think I am correct in saying that in silver on black they were only ever original fitment on Army vehicles. When new your car would never had that style of plate. Personally I think it is an abomination to have that style of plate on any classic car.

But of course it is very difficult to obtain the correct period plates.

The style of plate fitted by many of the Dublin prestige dealers around 1982 -1986 was a very particular style of matt black plate with beveled silver digits similar to the Ace peak plates in this link but the digits on the Ace peak plates are not 100% correct IMO.

I think the goldline and silverline plates in that link are age appropriate for your car although strictly speaking whilst they were in widespread use, I don't think any of these styles were actually legal at the time.

    Its a 190E Cosworth 2.3 16V.
    Full?id=7216880
The rarest & most sought after of the 190 series. Only 150K miles which is relatively low mileage for one of these. Will be supplied with a fresh NCT for the new owner. This is the finest example of a Classic Cosworth you will find, it has been extremely well maintained. These cars truly lived up to the long term corporate theme ‘ENGINEERED LIKE NO OTHER CAR IN THE WORLD’. If you are looking for one of these cars in premium condition – you have just found it. Collectors car & an appreciating classic. I may take a suitable trade in.

Comes with the peace of mind buying from a reputable Mercedes specialist.

BRIAN CROWLEY – independent Mercedes specialist located in 38 Millmount Grove, Windy Arbour, Dundrum, Dublin 14.

Lovely E30 but the guys are correct. You should have a font that is at least 80mm high not the 70mm eurofonts that you have.

A lot of nice classics including that Beetle are let down by the smaller fonts. Doesnt look right.

I think it looks good. Let's not "should" the guy to death. Fonts in this case are a matter of personal taste.

Fonts in themselves are indeed a matter of personal taste, but sizing of said fonts are defined by the relative regulations.

Regardless of the style of plate, I would of thought whoever made it would at least have centred the characters top to bottom as well as side to side.

That size of font was introduced in 1991 (When Europlates were introduced). Silver-on-black plates were (legally) allowed (and fitted) to many cars until December 1986.

Thanks for all the comments on the plates guys! I got the plates made at the Durrow show 6 years ago so the fella just probably used what he had to hand. I've long since lost his business card but I would like to get the correct plates as I want the car as original as possible.

Obviously the man has a lot of work put into that E30 to keep it looking that good. We were only pointing out that if he is after originality then he should get correct plates for it.

There are the 80mm font plates that were used up until Dec 31st 1990/

I don't want to come across as advertising so have a look at the website. Give me a ring if you want to discuss what would suit your car. Number is on the site too.

You can have black plates or red and white if its pre 87. Silverlines would look savage on it!!

I've since added a couple of German plate style stickers... but I didn't want to cause any of the old schoolers in here heart attacks. :p

Rear floors both sides. Car has been parked up for the best part of a decade. I looked at it during the summer and I looked at it 8 years ago and it was covered in moss then.
