One of those little devil cases was for sale on adverts.ie for a while, still might be. Has a custom powder coated chassis no less.

Lads is there such a thing as a sort of beginners kit to build your own basic PC on the cheap? I've always wanted to give it a go but i'd hate to spend a load of money on bits only to make a balls of something.

I suppose the best thing in your case to do is get a old desktop PC that you never use and try to take apart / re install it. It wont be that much different from when you install a new system.

The only kit you need is a Philips head screw driver, and an optional extra is a static wristband.

Also a clean work surface. I use my dining room table

Is this as good as the super flower amazon series of psu? I don't think that A-Data is as catchy of a name as super flower though :pac:

You're right, super flower is a pretty mad name that you'd remember more.
    Solitaire wrote: »
Very close. The A-Data is basically a slightly cheaper Corsair TX650 (PSH2 platform). The Amazon 650W competes with them directly.

But the A-data has the big advantage of being modular.

check out the insanely huge case, as well of the contents

You could fit two boards in there! Or half a corpse.

I agree, although if it's more than 6 or 7 years old, there'll be a lot of ports and parts which haven't been around for a while. At least we don't have to put up with those messy ribbon cables anymore.

Could anyone recommend me a replacement HSF for my x4 955? Its stock one is supposedly pretty good, but mine is extremely noisy even when at low temps at ~1800 rpm. Looking at the Scythe Mugen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Scythe mugen 2/3 is good and it will be a lot quieter. It's huge in comparison to the stock cooler. It's a bit of a pain to install though.
You could always get something halfway like the freezer pro 7 or 13. It would be quieter but if you're overclocking the mugen would be more suited.

Okay, looking at a Mugen 3 for the CPU and a Nexus Real Silent for the case. Not sure if it's the Basic or PWM version that I need. My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-870A-USB3. Also going to pick up Scythe Slip Stream from the SPCR Microserver Review.

Looks like the 8 core FX chip is going to come in a little more expensive than the 2500k. Guess its down to performance then. Gaming performance to be more percise.

PWM or basic for the case fan?
Looking at the picture of your board, Sys_fan1 (middle left hand edge) is four pin so it might support PWM. Sys_fan2 (bottom left corner) is only three pin though. Whether it's supported by the BIOS or not is a different story.
If it's a similar price, there's no reason not to get the PWM version as you can still connect a four pin fan to a 3 pin connector.

AMD currently sets a 3.2GHz 1090T at $185 is currently ($170 @ newegg) while this new 3.3GHz hexacore is $188.32. Unless they're extremely good value, that pricing would suggest that we won't be getting much performance gain.

If the 8-core is against the 2600K in pricing, I doubt it will catch up with it in games. 8 cores could beat 4 + HT in applications which use it though. I hope that they overclock as well as the 2500K and 2600Ks.

The PWM fan is more expensive and is actually apparently not as good.

    So I've bought these...
    Scythe Mugen 3

Nexus 120 mm Real Silent case fan x2 because they're cheap.

Scythe Slip Stream adjustable PWM fan, for the HP Microserver as recommended by Silent PC Review.

    Hope they're all right.

Well Im hoping for significant improvement on my phenom 965 (which is probably the best performace/value AMD chip at the moment) and that it will work om my 890FX MB. If that is the case I will be upgrading again this year.

The prices seem to indicate a lack of confidence from AMD - the signs haven't been good for awhile now.. we can only hope.

I think in reality only the 8 core chip will challenge the 2600k and 2500k, and even then it will just be trading blows rather than faster across the board.

Even trading blows is better than being left behind in the dust!

It's a good idea to ask someone to give you a hand with installing the mugen, BTW. Otherwise you you'll be at it half a day with sore fingers!

Yeah, I'm a cheapskate but it's perfect for general officey applications when paired with a nice SSD.

    Do you play games?

Nothing advanced. Most recent was portal 2 and it was good enough. The overclock to 3.8GHz does help a bit.

Looks like the FX 8 core clocks quite well :)
The AMD FX CPU, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2011, achieved a top speed of 8.429 GHz, surpassing the previous record of 8.308 GHz. The record was set on Aug. 31, 2011, in Austin, Texas, by “Team AMD FX,” a group comprised of elite overclocking specialists working alongside top AMD technologists, who will also be named in the Guinness World Records.

Should I be taking advice about a gaming PC in my thread from this lad??? ;)

    :D

(You know I'm kidding :D I'm going to have a kick ass machine now, thanks primarily to you  )

If I had the time and cash to go into the games, it would be great but I can always live my dreams through other people! ;)

AMD's new Bulldozer CPUs are up for pre-orders on some retail sites. Prices are very reasonable for the Octacore ones
