    From emirates.com

DUBAI, U.A.E., 8th September 2011: Emirates announced today that it will begin daily flights to Dublin from January 2012, marking its first route to the Republic of Ireland.

The daily service, from 9th January next year, will leave Dubai at 0700hrs and arrive in the Irish capital at 1130hrs. The return flight leaves Dublin at 1255hrs and gets into Dubai at 0025hrs the next day. An Airbus A330-200 will be deployed between Dubai and Dublin, offering First, Business and Economy class.

"Dublin will be our 29th route in Europe and Emirates' customers in Ireland who currently travel through some of our UK gateways will be able to fly non-stop to our industry leading hub in Dubai and conveniently connect onwards to our broadening route network," said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group. "We see strong potential in Ireland through its industry, technology, tourism and the huge number of Irish nationals living overseas."

Ireland has a population of around 4.5 million, but it's estimated more than 15 times that live overseas, including somewhere in the region of 80,000 Irish nationals in Australia and about 5,000 in the UAE. Other key markets are predicted to include Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, South Africa, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

The Republic is a popular tourist destination and last year received 6.7 million visitors, drawn by the rich ancient history, spectacular countryside, traditional Irish music, thousands of miles of scenic coastline and renowned fresh air.

Another a330-200 :/ plane spotting just isnt much use at Dublin..

I'm sure tech facilities must play a part in type selection at any destination. Dublin wouldn't be short personnel or spares when it comes to the A330...

Plenty of em in dub alright

Great news will end Etihad's practical monopoly on Eastward longhaul flights from Dublin which are between €200 - €250 more expensive than the same Etihad flight from the UK. I'd rather fly Emirates from Dublin and get the A380 from Dubai onwards to Oz or Asia than fly through the UK to get onto an Etihad or Emirates flight anyway.

I wonder will Emirates now scramble to sponsor some GAA team or the like? As Etihad have done. They'll do well on connecting flights to Australia I reckon and Aer Lingus are missing a huge trick here that they don't have some longhaul ac to do the route.

Yeah surprised they didn't get back into it earlier, they used to fly to Dubai but dropped it in 2007 to focus on USA routes under 'Open Skies'. Market could be saturated if they come in now and have 3 operators doing the route.

I have read elsewhere that the Emirates A330s are to be phased out within the next few years, so as long as the service prospers, another type (probably B777) will be used in due course.

Was talking to an aul work colleague of mine before the announcement was made and EK could be looking at doing an TA flight considering the ore clearance facility we have at Dub,Going slighty of topic did Air India make up there minds regarding have Dub as a base for TA flights.

This may one day in the future herald an A380 service into Dublin I suppose if the DAA ever gets around to building a new longer runway or extending the existing one. Emirates will eventually have 90 A380's in the future and the A380 apparently requires the same runway length as the Boeing 747, yet 747's operate into Dublin with freight and the occasional charter (was there one for the Uefa cup final) and Aer Lingus used the older 747 for years.

Sorry for going OT but what infrastructure would be needed for Emirates to run the A380 to Dublin if for arquements sake the passenger numbers were high and warranted it?

New Runway or extend the old one?

Is there any stands on T2 A380 ready or did the typical Irish myopic attitude prevail?

    Anything else?

Nice, this is great news for those of us down in OZ and NZ. Should hopefully cut the cost of going home and reduce the number of connections.

A 747 to Dubai would operate with no problem at all

Similarly an A380 probably would too, just might not want to have to stop in a hurry!

The main problem for the A380 is taxiways and stands, and AFAIK I did hear 1 stand at T2 is capable of handling an A380, I may well be wrong on that

When we were building our new hub about 10yrs ago the stands were designed bigger for the A380F and some other hubs had the taxi way extended along with some of the RWY,I know a guy who works in LHR and he told me that they got a new push back tug just for the new bus.

T2 has one stand that can serve A380.

Have to agree with Plowman here.

Not that Dublin will ever see an A380 (although I wouldn't hold my breath) but I don't think it would be put into regular service here as the demand wouldn't be there. I would say that the biggest aircraft that Dublin will eventually see on an regular bases would be either the 773 or/and A350-1000 depending if the runway it upgraded or not.

I heard off a cabin crew friend that Emirates offered Aer Lingus a codeshare on this route. So all EI had to do was to operate the route to Dubai and Emirates would then take over to forward the pax to Australia etc but when EI sent their reps to Dubai they sent them along on one of their older 330's and Emirates said that this wasn't good enough for their pax and it was below their standards so they pulled the plug and decided to operate the route themselves from Dublin.

Considering all the A330's are of same standard now that story is either untrue or highly old

With fitting the 380 in Dublin airport.
The a340-600 aswell as the 773 has used this airport before.
The taxiway limitations- Is it the distance between taxiways or the taxi ways width? Would there be issues exiting 28 onto e6 or e7?
Am i right in thinking the a346 will have more maneuvering issues than the a380 given its length and distance between nose wheel and rear.
When lax has arriving 380s the airport has to alter traffic for 15 or so mins that surely wouldn't be an issue for dub.
So is it the extra 3 meters either side on the wings the main issue,im nearly 100% sure 2600m runway wouldn't be a problem depending on lad but filling the seats might be.
How long would it take to complete a runway extention to 28(200m either end)? with the amount of dollars we havent got the new runway wont be happening soon.

One of them is older than the rest. There's one with that doesn't have tv screens on the seatback and it is hanging up in the cabin. That's the plane they sent their delegation over on and Emirates weren't happy so pulled the plug on negotiations

Could be a million reasons as to why the older model was sent. There is alot to running an airline.

That's been gone out of the fleet for some time. Plus (even if they had an A330 to spare for a jaunt to Dubai and back) why would they fly it all the way over there just so Emirates could have a look. If anything, Emirates would be more likely to send their staff over to check EI over. The story makes no sense.

Makes sense, with the size some deals between airlines are worth 100 tons or so of fuel is an insignificant amount. You need to fuss over things from time to time

+4 pilots, handling charges, maintenance, ATC fee's etc etc. Oh double the amount of fuel and you are close. All that for a code share:rolleyes:

This never happened, story came from Cabin crew... yeah that makes it instantaneously believable.

It would have been far cheaper for Emirates to a have flown a few suits over to talk to Aerlingus and see the aircraft. 5 minutes on the net would have shown you the inside of an EI A330.

Did i post a link to the actual event? I never claimed for it to be fact.

Aerlingus are up the ****ters.Emirates are growing quickly,if there would be a long term deal done between the two im sure the ..+4 pilots, handling charges, maintenance, ATC fee's etc etc would be insignificant compared to the survival of the company.

I assume that this will cut the cost and time in travelling to Australia. If theres not a big diffrence then i'd rather take the A380 from LHR.

Well you still need to change planes in Dubai regardless of whether you go from LHR or not! ;)

its a shame that they're all using the A330's for long range:/ all the long range aircraft you see at dublin is the A330's :(

I know but only one change at dubai instead of 2 if you go through LHR.

EI don't have any of the old aircraft with the old fitting since August 2009 when EI-DUB and EI-JFK were retired. at that time EI-ORD had already had the refit so was up to current standards before it was disposed of so i find this story unture. I know that this was however the case before EI operate DUB-DXB, they wanted codeshare with EK and it was a possibility. It had basically been put in place for 13 or so connections until one of the old aircraft was placed on the maiden DUB-DXB flight and then Emirates pull all intentions all together.
