    website still showing a A330

Until EK officially make that decision it will show the A332.
At the launch EK predicted an aircraft upgrade within 18 months. Current news inside EK is that they will put a B777 on it this summer. (Info gained from an EK staffer) Booking are close to full for the first 3 months of the service.

Emirates website are showing the A340 and 777 for bookings in November of this year? I'm flying with Emirates in March and will be interested in comparing their service with Etihad having flown them previously.

Judging by the extra desks need for check-in , I'd imagine the 777-300.

Will it be the A340-500. I'm also assuming the A340-300 too, but aren't these being retired soon? (A343).

Would be nice to see a B777-200LR, very pretty aircraft, but the 773ER looks beautiful too.. Doubt they will use the 772ER, these are expected to be retired soon..

And the B77W has the latest cabin interior so EK can market it as a better product.

I wonder how much the onward traffic through LHR/AMS has been affected since the EK launch?

I fly to UAE more then twice a year and i usually use Etihad Airline but then i have to take bus to Dubai.

So this year i decided to use Emirate Airline and i feel disappointed :

From Dublin to Dubai - Poor Entertainment system comparing to Ethiad as with Emirate system is like TV you can not pause or select movie.., but Etihad you have the option to selection/pause....... plus my screen keep rebooting every 5mint

From Dubai to Dublin - the plane was over booked and they refused 15 passengers - Why do they allow 15 more booking the 1st place, the girl on the desk said the only reason they accepted more booking in hope people will cancel!!!

Also they did not inform anyone the plan is full via email/sms/phone so i have to wake and be in the airport 4am and get the news!!

Overbooking is standard on almost all flights.

Most airlines overbook. The ammount varies. This is done due a percentage of pasengers always not showing up for a flight. I'm afraid if you read the small print you will find you are not confirmed to get on the flight you are booked on. It is rare when you get a situation where all passengers booked check in and passengers having to be off loaded. In this situation the airline should offer an alternative flight and some cash compensation.

Well to be fair to Emirates they are upgrading the aircraft from June/July. The A332's currently on the route are being phased out of the fleet and will be replaced by the more modern cabin of the B777. So on that the latest Emirates ICE system will be available.

As for the overbooking, well most airlines do this as there are always no-shows for flights. Sometimes up to 10% (This can be a mix of rebookings, late cancellations or plain not turning up) It is a way for them to protect their costs....i.e. fewer empty seats.
But 15 seems a lot when they already know the demand is very high for their flights. I would expect that those pax got compensation and probably an upgrade on the next days flight. You can get very lucky if you are flexible in your travel plans.

If the figure of 15 is correct and not an exaggeration then that is outrageous. A figure of 2 or 3 is all it should ever be. 15 people refused permission could mean the plane was overbooked by 20+ passengers and I would find that completely unacceptable. I know airlines overbook but not by that much, that's just asking for trouble.

Ryanair don't overbook, they also don't do refunds, hence no need to overbook.:)

I can tell you first hand flights from LHR to JFK have been anything up to 85 people overbooked. Certain amount of seats in each of the 4 classes. Those same flights have departed with a few empty seats. Even stand bys have got on. But yes there will be the occasion when some passengers can be 'bumped off'. The incentives are usually quite good to take another flight.

I suppose when this airline has about 9 flights a day to JFK and code sharers you can get away with this. One flight a day perhaps not.

Well that's just it isn't it? Not a huge deal in that case unless you have a connection. If they overbook a flight that may only operate 3/4x weekly, then your few days trip could be ruined. A refund won't be any consolation. And in the case of the Etihad flight, it's a 24 hour wait, nowhere near ideal!

Well depends on the circumstances. If it was coming back, I'd gladly take free nights hotel and spending money to extend my holiday.

I've only ever been bumped off flights when I volunteered. €70 for sitting in an airport for 2 hours longer is a result in my book. Or €500 + hotel for a 24 hour again, result!

Don't the airlines usually select some "prim and proper" economy passengers and bump them up to Business and upgrade Business & Frequent flyers to first class to fill all the seats to avoid leaving the overbooked economy passengers behind?

I usually checkin very early so I suppose this is a good way to avoid getting offloaded?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

Yes they do and also pick out potential people that will accept cash and a free hotel, meals included, for the night.

Interesting, I honestly didnt realise they advertised that they dont overbook. The reality is Ryanair has probably the highest no show rate of passengers in the world, and there is simply no way that management would not take advantage of this.

Any time I have encountered overbooking (several), the reality has always been that the number of no shows has cancelled out the number overbooked. However i'm sure it does happen from time to time: http://travel.aol.co.uk/2011/09/13/ryanair-passenger-threatened-with-arrest-after-refusing-to-leave-overbooked-flight/

I'll leave it up to you whether or not you 'believe' ryanairs explanation.

And some more food for thought if you can be bothered: http://www.pprune.org/archive/index.php/t-319302.html

Take any claim from Ryanair, who also claim to be "the worlds favourite airline", and "no.1 in customer service" on their website, with a pinch of salt.

On the positive side of all this, good to see that loadings on the DXB-DUB flights are good. Many speculated it would all be one way traffic ex-DUB.

Both EI and FR stated publicly that they don't at some point - I can't find EIs claim now but FR's is on their website:

    http://www.ryanair.com/en/about/passenger-charter

Also the detail in that article isn't overbooking by intent, but due to a mistake by another passenger.
