I'm an incoming first year too and I'm even more worried as I'm not even from the country, i mean ive been living here for the last 5 years, but still, im afraid im just gonna be standing there on my own looking at people and not being able to make any friends whatsoever... this is doing my head in. But yeah, what can you do but go and try... xD anyone else here doing English Literature and History? (TSM) if so, let me know x
    K.

I'm in the same boat :) I haven't even lived in Ireland, though, so I'm even worse off than you, haha. I'm absolutely terrified and I'm probably just going to stand awkwardly in the corner of every room I enter with my mouth stitched shut, three-thousand miles away from home. I'm doing English Lit as a TSM subject too. Not History, though.

Guys, the way I see it is that ALL of us incoming first years don't know many people, and ALL of us are afraid of the new college life in some sort of way and ALL of us are going to be a bit shy at the start but there's going to have to be a moment of ice-breaking for everyone though! So I think ye shouldn't be so pesimistic about it, everything's going to work out just fine, sooner or later. :)

    Well said!

Meeting up sounds like a good idea! I know dublin and town pretty well....:)

Do people tend to only hang out with people in their course? Because as of now I'm uncertain about my course...history and French now...potentially science or law....no sure....my level of panic is unreal....

I guess I'll just meet up with people during the day, because I'm not a club person.:p

Is a wristband worth getting? How much does it cost to get in, some of the events are going to be free anyway aren't they?

There's one up for introductions already but it says 'no chatting' sooo.. I suppose you could always pm people.

HELL YES. Now how do we make sure this happens and there are no flake outs?

Is it okay to PM people you spot on here that you might have something in common with, or do people find that a bit pestery and odd?:p I do figure if I can't almost-anonymously PM people on an online forum, I've got no bloody chance approaching people... face to face. But it's always an awkward moment messaging somebody with no real reason other than, essentially, 'hi wan be frends?:D'.

I heard that it's about 8 euro per entry, so the wristband should be well worth it. (: I dunno if the clubs will let you in for free without the wrist band though.

Other than clubs, what else is the wristband good for?

Hahahahahaha. My god you are freaking out. :P

I get what you mean. Well on Facebook I'd ignore random 'hi wanna be friends forever' etc, but I think on these forums, people, ESP first years, join with the intention of meeting others. So, pm away. (:

That is completely ok, go ahead and PM.:)

If you even have a problem writing a PM to people in a forum then you are even more shy than I am. I'd say its probably best to have a shy people meet-up in the daytime and if it goes well we shy people could go together to a club.

I'm just afraid going in there knowing nobody and not even knowing exactly what its going to be like in there. I would more than likely go if we have a shy people's meet-up and then we shy people go there, lol.:o

shy people meet up it is. How do we settle the details?

Just go with the flow Thysol :) At the end of the day, if all the people living in your apartment in halls go out, you're probably going to want to go out with them aren't you? You won't be alone. Personally, I won't be going clubbing alone. If I don't know anyone going I'll stay at Halls, it's too dangerous to be out in Dublin on your own at night anyway isn't it?

But the problem is that I don't know anyone!

Maybe we should first start a new thread titled something like, "Shy people's meet-up" so that we could see who wants to attend and so that people could post ideas.:)

I wasn't sure either but then I applied for Beginner's Spanish. The way I see it, first year is the easiest year. The workload is going to increase, not decrease so this is the year to do it!

i'm going into beginner spanish too :) i hope i survive it okay... i know nothing! Just wonderiing, when do you apply for the beginner classes? or do they just seperate us on the day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭Phareon

You should have indicated on the language modules form in your orientation pack that you intend to take a beginners' Spanish class. I'm not sure when these forms have to be returned, but it's still worth a try if you haven't returned it.
If you've already done all this, I would assume we'll be told where to go at registration/orientation regarding these module classes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭steve84

I had heard that the language classes fill up fast so sent that form back the same day I received the orientation pack. :o

Want to do beginners Spanish too so hopefully there'll be more than me that hasn't a word of Spanish :p

Oh by the way, it said on the bottom of the form that the deadline for applications was the 16th September.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Hollzy

Looks like there'll be a few of us in Spanish so! I can say hasta la vista and hola and stuff like that XD

This thread has me suspecting the higher spanish one is going to be me ..... and no one else. :pac:

And I'm still the only one on here doing Business and Russian!? I'm sure those other 6 people have got to be lurking this forum ... hello ... talk to me. :D

Random off topic question, how much will it cost per week to live in Dublin? Excluding rent? And also, in these compulsory tours and whatnot, is there a roll call of sorts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 170 ✭✭YodaBoy

Whats the story with all the forms!? I want to get all this paperwork out of the way quickly but I really don't want to screw it up..
Has anybody got the fee demand yet? Or should we crack ahead and cough up?

I live comfortably on 70 a week, and could easily get by on less.
And no, there's not. But you will get frowned at for stupid questions in the library if you miss them

TCD is known for leaving things a little late :) We'll be getting it this week, if not then Monday next week

I already paid mine last week because my mom seen the 1st September deadline (meant for 2nd years+) and freaked out even though I had already emailed the office and been told to just pay before Freshers

Does anyone know if I am able to do Spanish as part of the extra language classes even though I'm doing BESS which has a language option. I'm only able to do French as part of BESS and would rather do Law and then beginners Spanish.

    Hi,
I need Fresher's advice. I am a very shy person who doesn't drink, is not on facebook and was never in a disco before. I'm kind of afraid that I won't make any friends in Trinity because I am basically the opposite to a "cool" person. I want to change that though. Do yous have any advice for me how I could easily change this?

    @Mods
I hope this isn't offtopic, but as the threadname I am just looking for fresher's advice.
This is what will or should happen.you will lose your shyness get a facebook account and start drinking cos its just easier that way and more enjoyable.....drinking is fun and disco/clubs are even more so when you're a little bit drunk.just say to yourself....I only live once and I dont wanna look back on the most freedom filled part of my life thinking I didnt just let go and go wild'!
