Depends how active each society is, how demanding your course is and how thinly you spread yourself between societies (or hobbies in general).

If you're involved in a society heavily (have a named position on committee or whatever) then it can be time consuming. Not in a bad way of course :)

Realistically, if you join 5 then each soc will probably get one evening of your time each week. Not much time, and certainly not enough to get involved in any of them to any significant degree. 2 or 3 is probably what you should aim for.

I can't wait to join some societies! There are so many I like! How many is it possible to join realistically?
Is there a list of them or something? I know nothing about any other than word of mouth..

There's a list here of Clubs and Societies. A cursory glance tells me it's incomplete, since it's missing at least Pirates and Knitting and possibly more. There's a better page somewhere else, but I can't find it. :(

This is a more complete list, I don't know if that's all of them though

Has anyone paid the registration fee yet?

    Hi,
I need Fresher's advice. I am a very shy person who doesn't drink, is not on facebook and was never in a disco before. I'm kind of afraid that I won't make any friends in Trinity because I am basically the opposite to a "cool" person. I want to change that though. Do yous have any advice for me how I could easily change this?

    @Mods
I hope this isn't offtopic, but as the threadname I am just looking for fresher's advice.

    Classic CS:D

Speaking from the point of view of a very uncool person:

Not drinking isnt a huge thing, as long as you have ID so you can still go out.

Also, dont say disco, say club/pub/whatever.

Get facebook, most of CS are on it for one and its a good way to find events, and friends. AFAIK most courses have a group on it now, feck moodle(google it).

As above, join societies, sure gamers play tabletop games(soz guys) and D&D and shít, most introverted people you'll ever meet:p

College is a lot different to 2nd level, you dont end up with the few distinct groups like you do in schools. Find people with similar interests and dont be afraid to say hi.

Actually not being on facebook gets you automatic hipster cred. It's hip to be square, yo. But seriously between classes and societies and accomodation you'll be meeting so many people it'll be very difficult not to make friends.
I'm from Donegal as well and heading to trinity on the bus the day before if you want to meet up or something.

You sir have never played a role-playing game. Video games are for socially inept recluses. Role-playing games on the other hand are for those with finely tuned social skills, knowledge of tact and etiquette, boundless imagination and a razor sharp wit! Get your facts straight before you spew such baseless slander ;)

I've played DnD before, and as above, 40k. Always get a "unique" crowd for those anyways:p

@thysol Don't worry about it, you can totally reinvent yourself if you really want to, you'll certainly find people you get along with anyway with the amount of people there! Good luck, hope I see you!

I'm a girl too, woooo. Are you doing CSLL then?

Nope, just CS. ): 'cause I don't have a base for any of the languages for CSLL, which is a pity 'cause I was dabbling between CS and Linguistics. AHH LIFE.

Can there be some sort of shy person's convention? Another terrified shy person here. I can be inadvertanly awkward and uncomfortable in new places with new people, so I'm worried I'm just going to end up alone.

There are one or two people I know going, but I don't know if it's a good idea to hang out with old friends in case I find myself just going with the easy option of sticking with them, as opposed to making the effort to meet new people?

I have no proper CS experience either! ): I picture my course mates typing complicated codes while I attempt to change my font colour. Any girls here doing CS/CSLL? Are we really that rare?

Don't worry at all. I had the same worry that I wouldn't get Java (the programming language you do in first year) but other boardies managed to calm me. Basically don't worry, it'll probably be easy enough and even if it isn't you can get some help from the Computer Society or netsoc. I'm just repeating what other Boardies told me.:D By the way are you really from Malaysia?

If you want, we shy people can meet up somewhere, although I have a feeling that it would be really awkward, with so many shy people.:D

That's what they say but it doesn't keep you from worrying as I'm sure you understand. Haha yeah, I guess there aren't many Malaysians doing cs, or anything other than medicine, dentistry or pharmacy really.

HAHA, I'm picturing a room full of people blushing.

But you don't know what programming is actually like. I would start worrying when the time comes and then "if" you are having difficulties.

Me too.:D Thats why I'm thinking it mightn't be a so good idea after all.

Dirt! :/ I'm thinking of taking one of the optional language modules butttt wondering if the workload will end up being too much for first year at least!

Ha, my main problem is approaching people so I wouldn't mind having a shy people meet-up. :P If we had a thread here in advance for chatting, introductions, etc.?

There's one up for introductions already but it says 'no chatting' sooo.. I suppose you could always pm people.

We would have to have a fairly well thought out plan otherwise this is going to be the most embarassing meet-up ever, as you said:

I wasn't sure either but then I applied for Beginner's Spanish. The way I see it, first year is the easiest year. The workload is going to increase, not decrease so this is the year to do it!
