I'd have a problem with it to be honest. The women are most likely sex slaves Eastern European or African. Passports taken away and sold from one scumbag to the next.

TBH while this is a serious problem the extent to which it happens is somewhat overblown by the media and certain outfits with agendas of their own.

The problem is that where buying sex is legal, demand for it goes up. And since many men like to refuse to wear condoms, ask prostitutes to do horrible dehumanizing things that they wouldn't normally ask of someone they cared for.
Where prostitution is (fully) legal a sex worker can turn down clients or refuse to perform whatever services she chooses.
and buy sex from underage people
Where prostitution is legal underage sex is still still illegal so the point is irrelevant.

that includes rising demand for buying sex illegally
Legal to buy sex = rising demand for buying sex illegally -WTF ?
It enables some people to think of other people as things (e.g. body parts such as a "gash"), and not people.

If one of my mates spent 100 quid on a hooker i'd give him a fistpump. If he spent 100 quid on his missus i'd give him abuse.

At least if you drop 100e on the hooker your guaranteed the ride.

The Question men need to ask on Prostitution.

I see a lot of posts (i presume men) sayings its fine to use a prostitute. Consenting adults..

    Questions you need to ask:-

    1. If you had a daughter would you be fine with her being a prostitute? (most men say no to that one)

    2. If the prostitute is not Irish, who paid for her to come to Ireland? Is the money going to her Pimp.

Yes I would care. Only sad losers use prostitutes and I hope I don't hang around with sad losers.

    1. I dont think any father is comfortable with the idea of their daughter having sex anyway. Their daughter could be a slut and they'd still feel just as bad if they found that out. Ultimately it's still the womans choice to how she lives her life regardless what her father thinks.

    2. Is it not possible she could come here on her own dime?

Now that's not an entirely fair statement.

I have friends who are incredibly nice people, one in particular is possibly the nicest person you could ever wish to meet. Unfortunately he's so freaking shy no girls have ever really thought of him as anything more than a friend, he's also not the best looking guy in the world.
He is however well educated, hard working and very very successful. He's now 27 and has never had a serious girlfriend, but has used prostitutes in the past for a bit of, lets say physical relief. And there is no harm in that.

Imo Prostitution should be legalized, made into a proper business model much like many other parts of the world. It would greatly lower the cases of abuse, assault and rape on prostitutes, essentially remove the power many Pimps have as well as generate extra tax for the country.
Health systems could be put in place to ensure protection is used, and the women do not have to perform acts they do not want to.

Presumably she (or he) came to Ireland the same way any other migrant worker does ?

It may be irrational to some, but my opinion of person in question would go down.

Because there is very little wrong with the attitudes expressed in this thread so far. It's been a combination of jokes with some 'live-and-let-live' ideology thrown in. Nothing to be alarmed about, frankly.

I dunno, I guess I just find it difficult to joke about the sex trade, having done research on it in the past and knowing the misconceptions that still exist.
(Brooke Magnanti and Xaveira Hollander have a lot to answer for!)
Still, this being AH I know I probably shouldn't take most of the responses posted seriously.

Has anyone here actually had any sort of interaction with prostitutes? Many years ago, I lived in the red light district in the U.K, and got to know a fair few of them. Some were self-employed, some paid for protection which they got. That's basically what a pimp is, the guy who will knee-cap you if you mess with the chick. Some are scumbags, definitely, but that's people in general, some good, some assholes. A lot of the girls worked to pay for University, and the amount of violence was tiny. Sweeping statements with what appears to be zero first hand knowledge abounds in this here thread.

I'm not saying every situation is the same, that would be stupid. The thing is, working girls have set up their own business model, the problems that are there exist because it's not regulated, and it should be.

We still backwards in that sense,no one in the political world would discuss it due to the backlash from the women's council, even in general its still viewed as a seedy business but its common occurrence abroad and yet this scaremongering view if it was legalised society would fall in on itself.

The view comes that if someone using these services is funding crime which one regard is true, but if the service was probably regulated like in holland/germany/australia it might cut down on spread of stds/violence/and produce some revenue for this country.

We are quiet reluctant to tax these things but have no problem taxing cigs+alcohols quiet heavily despite the warnings that its bad for your health.

I do agree that legalizing and regulating would possibly make a better system than what there is now. Some way for the people being used to have support and to ensure that they get proper medical checkups every so often.

On the other hand I doubt this would stop trafficking as traffickers could easily undercut the prices charged by the 'legal' girls, though criminalizing clients who use these prostitutes would maybe help there.

I just don't like to see the abuse of anyone, but when money is involved it is very difficult to stop people being used.

I agree, its pathetic. I think it goes for most threads on this forum though... Some of the guys on here really do portray themselves as mindless perverts and they dont seem to care either...

    There is a difference...
If you choose to smoke or drink too much you are only putting yourself at risk, or abusing your own body.
Prostitution requires 2 people to be involved, so youre not just potentially harming yourself.

Do you not think that over time a lot of these girls suffer emotionally / mentally because of what they are used for?
Of course they do, unless they already have personality disorders.
    They are human after all.

Quite a few of the posters who agree with legalizing Prostitution here are female.

Yes. Never bought the time of a hooker, but I can understand why people would, from the brief illusion that someone wants to spend their time with you to something as simple as practice at the sexing. What I find sad is that so many people are unable to see beyond their own narrow circumstance and allow themselves the luxury of empathy.
