Is anybody applying for the language modules? Does anyone know how much work is involved? Will it encroach on my actual course work, or is it fairly handy like?
I'm seriously considering doing them, but I'm not completely sold yet :P

I don't know any of these answers but I put down the B1 Spanish module :D

Does anyone know when exactly we'll be able to access our timetables and the SIS and the likes. Is it all after we register?
Also, do lectures usually finish early on a friday? I usually work fri/sat/sun so would need to be home in good time!
    :)

You'll be able to access SIS when you register, you've got to be given your password.

As for lectures. It depends on the course but lectures could potentially be on untill late. Normally latest is until 6pm.

A1 level is complete beginners, although you may know some 'basic phrases'.
A2 level is if you can understand and say some basic phrases, introduce yourself, interact if people speak slowly, etc.
B1 level is if you can describe who you are, where you live, cope in a basic social setting, etc. A pass in the LC is required.
B2 level is if you 'can already deal with most situations arising whilst traveling in an areas where the language is spoken'. A pass in the LC is also required here.

^Also, you can only do one language

So if I'm reading this correctly, everybody attending college for the first time this year has to return the yellow form (FRS1) to the Treasurer's Office, correct?

Mine is in the envelope waiting for a stamp :) I'm going into town tomorrow but I'd prefer paying for the stamp rather than walking around aimlessly asking for the office :D

Ah, I need A1! Thanks. My pack arrived today but I'm not at home so I won't have it until this evening. I was trying to remember from reading about those language modules about a week ago. What language are you thinking of doing? I think Spanish would be useful but I'm not 100% sold yet either.

I'm thinking of French, maybe B1 or B2! But I'd love to start something new as well.. Right pity we can't pick more than one language!!

It's really quite easy to find if I have the right office. It's just next door to Starbucks on College Green.... I think.

Any older students know if I'm thinking of the right place?

Here's an aim for all the freshers:

126 things to do in Trinity before you leave.

Those lists are *amazing* All will have to be attempted, for sure!!!

Yeah it'd be great to continue French as well but I'm going to prioritise Spanish because I want to travel and it seems like a great one to have!

That list is great! Saved to favourites ;D

If you ever have an admin related problem, try sort it yourself first you'll often get a straight answer that way; from experience, the SU are helpful but have been unknowledgeable on certain major topics in the past, tutors are generally a better source of information but should only be consulted if it's not an everyday problem.

I was just looking through the college calendar there, it's slightly confusing. I see there are 2 "study weeks" one in november and the other in february. What happens during these weeks? Are there lectures or do some people stay at home.

About the optional language course, i'm thinking about doing beginners spanish but my course is pretty long..about 30hrs/week. Will I have time to do the module?

There's no labs or lectures during those weeks for most courses. You're suppose to use them to catch up on reading. And sleep.

I have such a newbie question to ask...

what is the difference between a tutorial and a lecture? haha

Tutorial is a much smaller group of the class, more intimate classes. The whole class goes to lectures. In a language course for example, an oral class would be a tutorial and a literature class would be a lecture.

I have no proper CS experience either! ): I picture my course mates typing complicated codes while I attempt to change my font colour. Any girls here doing CS/CSLL? Are we really that rare?

Joining a soc and getting involved is possibly the best thing you can do to make friends as a fresher, and if the soc is related to your course then you can usually get help to boot! (If you ask nicely... :) ) This is what I did going into CS and it helped a ton.

I can't wait to join some societies! There are so many I like! How many is it possible to join realistically?

How many €2 coins do you have? Join em all like, there is no obligation to attend just because you sign up, but you'll be able to go to any events that interest you.

Generally the way it works is that you'll join a ton in Fresher's week, go to a load of receptions and events, then after forget about 90% of them and just go along to random events you see postered, and maybe get properly involved with somewhere between 0-3 societies, or more depending on how much of an extracurricular overachiever you choose to be.
