    How's it goin Folks !

Anyone up for a bit of craic ?

I had an idea for a new competition for this year.(Ran it by the Mods and got the go ahead (Thanks Guys))

    Pimp my Knife

I have a new hunting knife design for this year and they'll be up on my website for sale at €275.00

It's an all round hunting knife though designed primarily for skinning and gralloching. Because of it's size though it's also ideal as a bird & small game knife and wouldn't even be out of place in a fishing bag.

Over all it measures 8" or 200mm
    Blade Length is 4" or 100mm with a 3 1/2" or 87.5mm cutting edge
It's 4mm thick or 5/32" and is 1 1/8" or 28mm high (from spine to cutting edge)
It's made from CPM154 steel hardened to 59 RHC and is Shaving Sharp
It's Scandi Ground (22 Degrees) with a1 5/8" or 35mm false edge on the spine

    It hasn't got a name yet !

So here are a few pics

    pimp-1.jpg

    pimp-2.jpg

    pimp-3.jpg

The knife is shown above with Green/Grey Buckeye Maple Scales, Stainless steel pins and lanyard tube and is set off by red micarta liners. Each Knife comes with a newly designed, hand sewn leather sheath (Right or left handed) and comes with a fitted lanyard .It comes with my lifetime garuantee as standard.

That's the sales pitch bit over I'll explain the competetion and how it works in the next post

In your opinion who do you think designed the best knife (Note: Not the best photo) 80 votes

Ok So here's how the competition works

I would like to make some of these knives available to Boards Members at a serious knock-Down price of €195.00 a price reduction of €80.00
One person is going to get a knife for nothing.

    So How does it work?

The competition starts with members expressing an interest in buying a knife.

Each person then starts with a naked CPM154 blade as described above.

Over the coming weeks I'll make material available to Pimp Your Knife

    Materials would include
    • Handle Materials (Varieties of Timbers, Bone, Horn, Micarta etc)
    • Fittings/Pins/Lanyard Loops (Nickel Silver, Brass, Stainless Steel, Copper etc.)
    • Sheath (Right Handed, Left Handed, Coloured Dyes etc.)
    • Lanyards (Leather Thong, Braided Leather, Couloured Paracords etc)
    • Liner Material (Micarta in various colours)
This is exactly the same process as commissioning a custom made knife except you will be doing it in public.

    So How do you win?
I'll photograph the resulting knives and the members here will vote to decide who has chosen the best combinations of materials and has built the best knife.

    What do I win
The winner of the vote get's his knife for free (No Charge)

    Fact is everyone wins!

The combinations are vast and each knife will surely be a one off original. Each entrant will be getting a one of a kind custom made knife at a fraction of what it would cost to commission a knife from me or any other maker. So anyone who enters is on a winner.

The knife voted Best Knife goes to it's owner for Free (He/She is definitely on a winner)

I get Business during a recession (I'm on a winner aswell)

    How to Enter
    • Simply express an interest below by saying "Count Me In"
    • The entire process will be over by xmas
    • If you would like to enter you will be asked to pay a small non refundable deposit €50.00
    • Once the knives are complete you will be asked to pay the balance.
    • Once the voting is complete the winner will receive his knife and his money back

    Rules
    • All normal forum rules apply
    • Try to enjoy it. At the end of the day it's only a project to try to design a good useable knife.
    • If you are lucky enough to buy or win a knife then it is automatically assumed that you are capable of owning and using it.
    • By taking part in the competition you agree that I, anyone associated with this competition or any member or affiliate of Boards.ie will not be responsible or held liable for any damage or injury caused while using your knife.
    • Anyone can take part in the design thread but you MUST be over 18 years of age to win or buy a knife. You will be asked to prove this.
    • Entries are open until September 5th 2011 (If we don't reach the minimum of 5 entries by this date the competition will be voided). Anyone who enters will still have the option of getting a knife at the discounted price but there will not be a free knife with less than 5 entries.
    • Try to stay on topic
    • Do not post negative comments about other members ideas or suggestions. They won't help with the build and you will find yourself eliminated from the competition. (Slagging is welcome :) )
    • There will probably be more rules but I hope it's straight forward enough.

So that's it, If you would like a Custom Made Knife for Xmas you just pay a €50.00 deposit now and the rest when the knives are complete.

In order for the competition to go ahead we need at least 5 valid entries. Entries are open until September 5th 2011

The number of entries is limited to a maximum of 10.
It's on a first come first serverd basis.
If you would like to enter just post a "Count me in" comment below

    Finally !!!
As I said earlier the Knife currently has no name so whomever wins the competition the knife will be named after their Boards.ie username (e.g. If your username is "Grizzly 33" the knife will be called the Grizzly 33 in my website and marketing materials from then on

So what do ye think let me know. Any Questions?

    Regards

    Davy

Count me in! But to be honest i wouldn't know where to start designing a custom knife. I don't even look up custom knives on the internet so i don't know how mine will turn out. But i will enter anyway.

This is a great idea, Davy. I'm sure you will have loads of interest.
A fantastic looking knife too. It looks to me to be the type of blade that would be at home with any common outdoor task.

I'm well served with my damasteel Sealgaire and will soon have my big ol' bowie, so I'll opt out of this one; by necessity of funds alone, really!

    Hope it all goes well.

would love to enter but I got three already and funds wouldnt justify me a fourth. I'd love to have the skill to make 'em
best of luck to those who win you'll end up with a fine peice of craftmanship

Sounds a bit of fun. I'd be interested for sure.
Question - when you present the material option for sheath, handle etc how does this work? Does this involve all material options in 1 go?
Is it pics of each posted here & we select puplically or privately then select the options we want?
Can you explain this part of it a bit more.
Also when is approximate knife completion expected?

    Cheers
    Great idea

PS I like the sound of an 'EPointer' knife
Has a ring to it haha
    :p

Yeah you've pretty much nailed it... BUT Not all in one go...
I'll look at what timbers etc. I have available at the moment and post photos then each participant can choose which handle material they want. Once everyone has chosen a handle material a couple of days later I'll post fixtures & fittings, Then Spacers/Liners, Sheath options, Lanyards etc. all in turn.

What I thought would be a bit of fun is a NO REVERSAL situation in other words once you choose an option or a colour you are bound by the choice no changing your mind at a later date. This way you have to think fast and choose an option quickly but carefully.

I won't have all options available to everyone. Example I might have only 2 sets of Bog Oak Scales available so the first 2 to opt for them get the bog oak but they cant change their minds later.

And everyone should have their knife by xmas

Finally was that a "Count Me In" ?

    Regards

    Davy

Hi Davy. I'm very sorry but i was in a car crash and it will cost me a few quid so my funds have gone down and i will not have enough leisure money to buy the knife so i will have to withdraw my name from the list but at least there is a great number of members with interest so i won't be leaving you hanging and i would say one of the latter enterents will be glad of a place and i would say everybody will be really delighted with the knife they receive.

Also Davy i heard of you now(I didn't before now) so in the future i will buy a knife off you privately off your website. Might be a year or two but i will eventually as i really like the look of your knives.

Dave it looks like it will go ahead so was wondering what way you want to gather the deposit? Can I post a postal order? €50 I believe you said as a deposit.
