hi djskip316i thanks for the reply, i was getting the same speed of 1.5mb when with eircom from day1 but the main house is with eircom too and they are getting speeds of 6-7mb, so problem is with line not exchange, can anyone help me plz on relation to the cooling off period as 7 days since order was contected ends monday and I'd like to know my rights but dont know who to ask..!

Well if you did get the brand new line you 'should' get the same speeds as the main house . And as for the cancellation period , the 7 days start from the day you order and not the day of connection . Stubid T&C's IMO

    Hi Condi,

We offer different service in different exchanges:

In exchanges where we have our own equipment (40) we offer up to 24MB broadband or up to 8MB Broadband which is ADSL2+ and un-contended

In all other exchanges dependent on what equipment Eircom have we offer 3 things:

    1) if it is next generation broadband enabled we offer up to 8MB uncongested broadband.
    2) if it is DSL enabled but not next gen we offer up to 8mb contended
    3) if it isn't DSL enabled we offer nothing.

    Thanks

    Gary

Hi Gary, can you tell us what exchanges have magnet's own equipment installed in them (i.e. you take advantage of LLU)?

Magnet seems to be very slow this evening. Speed test only giving around 900KB a second even after a reset. Will check again in the morning.

    Hi Gary.

I just signed up for the Magnet Force Max package, after being told by a sales rep that "We are fully available in your address and we can offer you up to 24Mb of dedicated broadband connection" after checking the address.

However, my current speed according to both your own speed test site and a couple of others is peaking at around 4.2Mb

I know "up to" 24 Mb is a relative thing, but 4Mb is a long ways short of that and there doesn't seem any point in me paying for up to 24Mb if there's no chance of me getting anywhere close. But then I would have expected the sales person to tell me that I could only get limited connection speeds if that was the case.

What would you suggest I do at this point?

    Cheers.

Saying that a product is "uncongested" is not necessarily wrong or a mere marketing term. This webpage gives a bizarre but good example: http://www.liquidzope.com/abc/1n/newsletter200406/analogy

I have asked Magnet to deliver me my UAN acc. nr via CS, and via rep here (last thursday)

It still hasnt arrived, is there any timeframe when they have to deliver it to me?

    Hyia,
After some troubles and good few weeks of waiting I had finally have my Magnet Broadband up and running. It seems fine, so far, however, I'd like to change the default name for the network and the default security key. How do I go about it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Folks,

I just got a new line installed in my house, in Broadford Co Kildare and it's good for broadband.

I have the below options and was wondering if anybody had any experiences with any of the ISPs below ?

Eircom - offering 3mb with a contention ratio of 42:1
Perlico - offering up to 6mb but didn't know the contention ratio ?
Smart - offering up to 7.6mb with a contention ratio of 42:1
Magnet - offering up to 7.6mb with a contention ratio of 12:1

I previously had Perlico 3mb when living in another place in Clonard, Meath and found the service to be quite good, stable connection and their tech support where very helpful.
I've read reviews on Eircom, Smart and Magnet on the web and to be honest, I'm not sure what to believe. Some seem to have had endless issues with each of the ISPs and some seem to had no trouble.

Basically, I am wondering which would be the best ISP for stable online gaming and a bit of web browsing.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks,
    Anthony

I'm curious as to why Eircom can offer only 3mb with 42/1 and Magnet 7.6mbit 12/1?? Are they not the same service?

Magnet's certainly looks like the pick of the bunch, but I'd like to see if that's actually what you get there, considering what Eircom are offering.

Yeah I was thinking the same & called Eircom back, a different rep advised that this was the cheapest package but that the line was good to go up to 7.6mb.

I think I'll go with Perlico to be honest, seems like a good deal, Magnet was just too expensive at €40 less line rental.

Finally got my Magnet Swift Speed profile upgraded today 'no thanks to Eircom' and the difference is unbelieveable . With Eircom i used to get 5meg down 0.25 up and 60ms ping . Cant understand how the ping changed so much using the same phoneline but im not complaining :D

You should have got a sheet of paper with it , with the user name and password and other details . It should have two 4 digit codes on it somewhere which you need to log into your router , mine was 7080 so to log into it , type 192.168.1.1:7080 into your internet search bar.

    Hi,
I think magnet have jabber protocol (ssl enabled) 5229 port blocked, and also outgoing mail (SMTP).

Can anyone else confirm this? Is there anyway to get these blocks removed?
Smart telecom also do this. The subscription costs enough, I don't see why I cant use basic internet services? Like, what is the reasoning behind blocking jabber, it is just used for instant messaging?

Disregard all of the above if it is just me and not a widespread thing :)

Hmm, I wonder could that be why I can't download it at home? (I know that should be a separate issue but coincidental don't you think?) Need Jabber myself for testing some new game software.

    hi Gunner,
What Jabber client are you trying to use?
http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/spark/ for example seems to download ok. If they do have the jabber port blocked, you wont have much luck getting it working tho!

Anyone else having Jabber/outgoing mail problems with magnet?

    Hi Guys,

Having suffered a horrendous experience with Magnet, I decided to come on and tell people about it, just to let you know what kind of a shambles they're capable of being.

We ordered their broadband service for our apartment in Smithfield on the 8th of July. The following week we received our equipment and were told that the phone line had been activated and we were good to go. When we couldnt get it working we contacted the technical support team, who constantly fobbed us saying they needed to elevate it to a 'Tier 2' problem, and someone else would be in touch. I don't understand why they have these people working in technical support if they're not capable of handling queries in the first place. In any event, having contacted them, probably about 15 times, over the past month, not once have any of my calls been returned. In fact, the only time somebody has got in touch with me was to arrange an engineers call out, which of course would involve putting an extra €100 in their coffers, so they don't seem to have a problem helping you if you're paying extra for it.

We were never made aware once that we would require an engineer to call out, and surely their sales team would know what kind of service is needed for our apartment block, as I would imagine we are not the first people there to use their 'services'.

Anyway, on Thu 4th August (11 Days Ago), I contacted them to cancel, and was told it had to be in writing, so I therefore emailed them. I haven't heard a single thing back from them, yet they were kind enough to send me out the invoice for a month that I haven't had a single second of internet connectivity. When I rang them again, I was told I needed to speak to their accounts team, and their retention team, and have twice called since to request they call me. Needless to say, as is the general trend with them, I didn't receive any call back. I was told that I am entitled to cancel, as it was within the 30 day cancellation period. It seems to be the case that if they totally ignore you, you won't be able to cancel.

As the moment, I can't order with another ISP because I am fearful they have somehow locked me into the full length of my contract by consistently ignoring my attempts to cancel it while I was entitled to. I literally cannot get any connection, am unwilling to pay €100 for an engineer (especially after the hassle they've put me through), and I'm finding it completely hopeless trying to get anywhere with any of the people they have working for them.

In short, I'm sure some people have had wonderful experiences with them, but from my dealings with them, they're the most unprofessional company I've come accross. They are helpful when singing up, but their after sales services are non existent. If you are planning on ordering the service with them, make sure that you ask a lot of questions about their ability to provide the service in your home, because if something goes wrong afterwards, then they will literally never help you, and completely ignore you.

    Hi,
I have Magnet Internet, I cant complain about their service it is fast. Its about 20% faster / better than the eircom.net I had before.

Just an issue with the router ,
can I use it with my security camera system?,
    I need to port forward,?
If not can I replace with a different router to do this?

    Hi,

Slothy - We do not block any ports on the Telsey as it is a gateway rather than modem. the only port blocked on our network is 25 as it is reserved for email.

sackedlunch - please PM me your account number and Name and I will look into this situation right away.

    Thanks

    Gary

Thanks Gary so how would I port forward to a device, do I need to buy a router to do this? or I can do it through an interface?
