Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

True but they vary alot. I use Handbrake to convert any avi files that I get. it's a free software tool that's very easy to you and has an "Apple Universal" format that will play on anything from a 10ft projector to an ipod

best option is to use apple tv,but jailbreak it to have boxee on it, boxee will read all avi files and has a great interface, no need to convert files then.

I recently purchased a JVC X3 projector with a Grandview tab tensioned screen, here are a few photos of the set up. I have 100hrs on the bulb and will calibrate the X3 in ther next few days although the picture from out of the box is stunning.

You should get black out curtains, makes a big difference

They are blackout blinds, not enough room between screen and wall for curtains. No problem at night, just during a very bright day but I am not using the projector much during the day to be honest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 160 ✭✭millhouse

Blackout blinds definitely the way to go to finish off the room. If you get the right guys to fit them they won't allow any light in whatsoever. They need to be fitted tightly so get the professionals. Nothing is as bad as a glare on the screen especially considering what you have paid for the projector & screen. I recently had a cinema done with the JVC X3, what a piece of kit

3D is very good but in 2D it is exceptional. I will tinker around for a while until I get the right set up including positioning of speakers and the rest of the AV gear. Watched Avatar 3D and the picture was better than when I saw it in the cinema.

Thanks, the centre speaker is on a shelf, I made for the wall, I am going to mount the tv to the wall too at some stage.

what are the big speakers for? are they just for bass or do you use double front speakers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 63 ✭✭HomeBoyDeluxe

Yeah they are just for bass, they cover the 5-80Hz frequency's with movies and gaming and music, they are much louder then any cinema, no exaggeration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

whats the model of them? i've never seen subs in that floor standing style before.... you've got me thinking!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 63 ✭✭HomeBoyDeluxe

The drivers themselves, are JBL GT5-12's, they are around 50 euro each, really good quality for the price, the boxes are tuned to 18Hz (the tall ones), I use three Behringer EP2000's to power them (3,300 watt RMS), the whole system does 130db full tilt!

ah right the cabinets are custom built? thats why i couldnt find them online!

  • Registered Users Posts: 63 ✭✭HomeBoyDeluxe

Yeah, I built them out of 18mm MDF, each one is around two full sheets, for the wood, glue and drivers, each sub only cost around 300 euro!

MDF sheets are only 17 euro, with free cuts in B&Q so its a good time to do a project!

Here is the build thread I posted on AVfourms:

All the equipment is in a 19inch rack built into the wall. You can see it on the left hand wall.

The movies are played on a Popcorn Hour A200 running YAMJ user interface.

The amp is a pioneer SCLX 81 - real powerhouse :D. Have it about 2 and a half years now and I still love it.

The fronts and rears are both Bowers and Wilkins. The fronts are CM7 and the rears are M1 from the MT30 system I used to have. They look quite small in the photo but that doesnt do them justice. Being both B&W they use the same driver technology so they blend in well. Quite a few of the AV shops I demoed in use the M1's as rears.

i presume your whole house reverberates when that system is turned up, as you have a lot of thin walls around it, ie plasterboard as opposed to block walls, if it was in a groundfloor area

Very nice setup, what media player is that you are using-is it a popcorn hour player?

EDIT: just seen Popcorn hour A-200 in previous post! have you upgraded to the A or C 300 yet? really really nice setup, do you have access to theback of the rack from a door in the attic out of curiousity?

I sold the popcorn hour last month. While its compatible with every file format you throw at it, i found it very buggy with a crap frontend. Adding to the library is a pain also. I changed to an atv2 which is jailbroken and has firecore atv flash installed. No Hd audio but i can live with that as i still have the bluray player.

I do have access to the rear of the rack via an access hatch in another room. Toying with the idea of expanding into this room:D

How do you find the atv 2, I'm thinking of upgrading, I'm using an ac ryan playon mini. its very slow but plays everything. would you consider upgrading to at3 or is atv 2 plenty?

all due respect to the smart investments, now i am asking myself why didn't i come up with the idea to use a projector , grr. well I do NOW, Ritz i love the setup you put together but wouldn't it be a better thing to raise the speakers up? like to be in line with seating position?

i will have to get me a decent surround system first i sold my old Yamaha and now i am looking for a new one, in your opinion people would it be better to buy a good surround sys or do i make my own? i would also have to see if it would be possible to use some surface and projector to turn 2D movies in 3D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,236 ✭✭✭Idleater

Your post probably could be worthy of a thread on its own. I would answer to build your own, and include a projector, but that is a big budget for one go.
I use a wall as a screen and 3d is fine.

Speakers are b&w 803. Driven by a marantz processor and rotel power amp.

Custom built to my own design. Couldn't find anything like it on the market so designed my own and had it made up. Every panel you see opens up for storage. The long one on the bottom swivels down as one solid piece. The other open down as well, makes getting at the back of gear much easier.

Love to say it's real walnut but the cost would have been 4x. It's a walnut stain on some other wood, not sure what
