I'm a student and I do work par-time, but it's tough to have the money to book holidays, hence the loan.

Your mother just wants to see you make a few birdies or eagles.

"Take your time" means don't put yourself under any undue pressure, not "take a nice holiday at my expense while I scrimp and save because I'm down 500quid".
My Mam has lots of money.

I'm a student and have very little.

Your parents didn't help you out financially at times?

I must still owe her about 400 quid, but it's getting paid.

Of course I've borrowed from them- and they would still help out if I asked because I've proved myself responsible enough to be trusted regarding paying it back.

So sorry, you've paid 100 quid in the entire time since you borrowed it? Seriously?

You should pay her back, and don't borrow money off her again unless it's under clearer terms.

She obviously meant to pay her back at a higher rate than 10euro a month and you obviously felt that paying her back at some stage before 2030 was an option.

So you're a student. You borrowed money for TWO holidays, which you can't afford to repay........ how are you gonna afford your next year in college?

I loaned 500 quid off my Mam last October and she said I could take my time paying her back. I've paid her in bits and pieces, 20quid here and there. Fine.

This week she's on my back about finishing the payments after I booked a holiday in Spain. Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but she said I could take my time.

I'm really bored so I decided to make up an inflamtory story and post it in AH for a reaction - Christ, I wish I had some meaning to my life.

€500... sure it's only 2.5 weeks dole. Tell her to relax and take it easy and tell her that those home cooked meals are fantastic and that your washing smells better than ever!

I said in the first place I've been paying back around 20quid a month, so yeah around 100 paid back so far. When you spend extra money on gifts it's costs a lot of money for a student.

I didn't think she'd be hassling me about it.

I do pay her money each month. It's not like I'm forgetting about it.
You've had nearly a year to pay her back though. It's perfectly reasonable for anyone to be hassling you at this stage, you're lucky she's your Mother, someone else may not have given you so much time.

Also, is a holiday absolutely necessary for your continued existense? You should think about that before booking one. Especially one you can't afford. You don't have to go abroad either, or go for a long holiday, why not a weekend away when you can afford it, or be patient and save up for a long one with your own money.

Sorry OP, you have plenty of scratch for a poor student.

I'm beginning to think you are telling porkie pies.

Or else are genuine but just really feeling entitled.

I've bought her birthday presents and christmas presents etc. but I've not included them in paying her back. An obvious thing to do but worth keeping in mind.

Anyway, we've fallen out over money which I never wanted to happen. Should I cancel my holiday and give her all that money and end up having a crap year with no holiday? I think she's being completely unreasonable about this.

I borrowed a few hundred off my Mum recently. I am going to pay her back over the next few weeks and do without having cash myself because I hated having to take money off her in the first place.

Why on earth would you include the cost of presents in paying her back? They are presents, doesn't really seem an obvious thing to me to charge someone for the cost of their own birthday or Christmas present.

If it was me and I still owed her money after 10 months I wouldn't be considering a holiday. I think you are being very selfish and that your mother is being more than reasonable in requesting her money back - after 10 months!

    How old are you?

Sounds like a son only a mother could love...oh wait.

Be thankful she's not backdating your loan to include thousands of meals, thousands of months' rent and a Santa Claus levy.

I'd imagine you are probably short of spending money for your holiday though?

I wonder if we could organise a benefit night for you here in boardsie land - anyone?

Firstly, are you mad? Posting this on After Hours is insanity.

Don't you know that the AH inhabitants are completely flawless in ever way? They never break the law, they never make mistakes, and they NEVER take loans from anyone, especially their mammies.

They will cut you down man...cut you down...

Of course its where we come to be morally superior. Dont you dare expose the facade.!!!

I don't think that's really fair to say. Try getting a loan off any bank and just throwing them an odd twenty, whenever you feel like it, they wouldn't be too happy either.

    I'm 19.

I was hesitant to accept a loan in the first place, she normally just gives me pocket money. This time it was a larger sum so I agreed to pay her back.

I AM paying it back, but apparently not quick enough.

Maybe every family is different and some people can't relate to the situation.
