We're all screwed if it's hot in Berlin. I like to think running in it now will make it less of struggle on the day.

It's the predictions and treaths that have stopped me going on the beer and burgers the last week. ;)

Once its not over 20 i'll be happy but 14-16 would be nice on the day.

Sun 7th Aug, Plan was for a long one of 10 easy plus 8 @ MP then 2 easy. For whatever reason it just didnt happen. 3 or 4 miles in my legs just werent feeling it and felt dead. Stopped just after 5 mls in Hyde Park with 44 mins on the clock. Beyond disappointing, after the easy week i've had.

    Weekly Review
, 31 miles and 6 runs. Worst week i could have had. Berlin is only 7 weeks away and i'm after stopping my run prematurely 4 times this week, not good. The next 3 or 4 weeks are crucial.

    Yearly Mileage, 1132.75

Good point, i believe it may be a mental thing more than anything. I was dreading this run today and as soon as it got tough i pulled the plug. Part of me is sick of marathon training i won't lie and i need a break from it after Berlin. No marathon at all in 2012 seems appealing right now.

All in your head Brian, you know that. You're hitting the most important part of your marathon training now and you're letting it get to you. Stop it.

Let that continue and you'll have another Cork...that and Meno will beat you. Recharge, freshen up and go back at it this week.

Stop giving up on your training sessions just because they're not going to plan, if the first 3 miles are **** you put in the extra effort for the next three, what the fudge is the point in turning around and going home? You know better than that...

Don't sweat it Brian. You doing those MP miles by yourself? That makes them way harder.

Again tell me if I am wrong here...

But if it really is getting to you... would it not be a better move to push back on the training and take a few weeks off and then aim for another one say next year or later in the year... Like Barcalona???

Again just a suggestion but yeah it does sound like a mental thing.... I went through a phase like that when I was playing soccer a couple of years ago and I gave up for a few months...Best decision I ever made

    My 2c worth...
Marathon training programmes by their nature are long and drawn out most of the time. This is bound to cause lapses in focus during the training plan. Perhaps try drawing a line under everything that you have done so far and break down the remaining 7 odd weeks into 4 weeks of focused work with the 3 week taper to follow.
By breaking it down to more focused segments it might allow a mental recharge...after all your on the run-in to the finish now...you wouldn't stop and walk/go home with a couple of hundred yards to go in Berlin, would ya??:pac:

Yes but when the going got tough last Sunday at 15 mls during the 20 miler i stupidly kept going on empty, and flattened my training for the week as a result. Ah no i'm a totally different runner than i was in Cork, that won't be repeated. The sub 3'10 GFA London marathon time is a big secondary goal which will keep me going if sub 3 slip away.

Sometimes with sometimes without. On my own today though so that may have been a factor. Yep it does make it much tougher alright.

I'll be honest. For an hour or so after i stopped today i was thinking of shelving Berlin, and shelving marathoning for 2 or 3 years. They have caused me nothing but pain the last 4 years i dont now why i persevere with them when all my ability lies with the shorter stuff. Ah no everything is booked for Berlin i have to do it.

Yep since Dunshaughlin i've drifted a bit, thinking in my head that i'd broken 3 already. What's killing me is I do a 55 ml week, then i'm too fcked to do another one like it and the trend is repeating. But yeah 7 weeks is manageable alright.

I would stop with 200 yards to go in Berlin if I had a fake number wink.gif

    Mon 8th Aug

Sri Chinmoy 5k Battersea Park, South London, 17'51 (9 second pb)

After a fairly horrid week last week, hot weather and general fatigue bringing 4 of my 6 runs to an abrupt halt I headed down to Battersea Park for the last of the evening race series for the summer. Enjoyed the last 2 i did so said i'd give this one a lash. Did about 800m warm up and a few strides and felt ok.

The gun went and I resisted to the urge to go with the leading 10 or 15 and just held back watching my pace. First km in 3'32 which felt saucy but didnt feel too fast. Found myself in a group of the 3 leading women and another guy and drafted beautifully behind them for 2k or so in the slight headwind on the back straight of the park. 2km was hit in 7'09 (3'37 2nd km) and still on track for a sub 18, which was the goal. Started to forge ahead of the 3 women at this point but one kept clinging on. 3k hit in 10'35, garmin was cutting corners as it did during the 2 mile I did here in June so i went with the km posts instead. It started to burn here but that was expected and hit 4k in 14'14, only need to run 3'46 to break 18 I told myself, how hard can that be? Hung on the last km to outkick the leading woman and finish in 17'50 on my watch, but we'll say 17'51 cause its always rounded up. Still its a pb by 9 seconds from Donore in May and it shows i've improved a bit since then. It really is the perfect course, pancake flat and the turns are even slightly banked like an indoor track and the trees provide great cover from the wind. I'll look forward to this series again next summer.

That has me right back into it. The easy week was the perfect taper in hindsight. 7th pb of the year now, not bad :p

Goal half is this Sunday in Nottinghamshire, 90% certain to do it. I could use a long one moreso probably but a pb (1'25'01) is there for the taking i would think and it would give me an idea of how my Berlin preparations are going.

1 ml w/d for 5 mls total. I bet none of you expected to see that tonight!

Ah pity, after reading previous posts, I was about to recommend going out and smashing up some cars and shop windows. Cross training and good for the aggression ;)

Well done on the pb, great stuff.

Nicely done. I've always found that marathon training helps shorter stuff as well (well 5k and above). I've ran my four fastest 5k either a month before or after I've done a marathon. No more whining before Berlin now. Get the finger out.

Would be nice yeah. It took me 9 months to take a minute off my 5k time, it could take years to the same again.

Results from last night are here. The 2 women behind me are quite useful runners, 2'47 and 2'51 marathoners as i found out today during my online stalking research :)

    Tues 9th Aug
, 7 mls recovery down to Regents and around and back (the usual route) in 62'08 (8'55). Legs felt quite good actually, much better than usual after a race.

30 mins core after on parliament hill with the view of the city down below and all the helicopters swarming over south and east London.

Well done on not getting 'chicked'. One day I dream of not getting chicked in a race.

You had your chance in Maynooth last year, you only had Emer911 to beat!

Seriously though, when the 3 women came up level with me after a km i said "i'm not losing to them" and hung with them. If it was 3 men i probably would have let them off and not broken 18 as a result.

Those of us on the lsr on Saturday morning last got the full Meno press release on his thoughts on finishing behind a woman in a race.

Must say myself and Gerard laughed along for a couple of miles:D This was after the list of reasons why Tyrone would beat the Dubs.

Fair play to him, he repeated it when asked to (by me) so that any women present could hear his enlightened thoughts.

You know in some countries, he'ld be a God:p

Excellent result brian - topped my PB anyway. I might have to try that rathfarnham 5k now :)

To pour a teeny tiny a bit of cold water on you - its worth remembering that according to Bob Glover, women are statistically speaking better at the marathon than the shorter distances relative to men - i.e. if a man and a woman have the same 5K time, the woman thrashes (and I mean thrashes) the man over the marathon distance*

assuming theyve both trained properly, terms and conditions apply etc.

I had your pb before Monday didnt I? Not that i notice that type of thing :)

Yeah i know that about men v women from 5k upwards. I wont be going for their marathon times in the near future. Being a former sprinter though its even more pronounced for me, meaning i punch above my weight for the shorter races and cramp like a mofo in a marathon.
