This is bull****. Why not drop the trade barriers with Africa and then stop the foreign aid that does **** all.

    I've a better idea.

    Why not tell Africa:

    Stop having pointless bloody wars.
Stop thinking riding children will cure you of aids.
    Stop supporting butchers/dictators.

They've been independent long enough to take responsibility for their own crap. Africa has fantastic natural resources, spectacular scenery, and great land to grow food.

But no, it's the same bloody story year in year out.

    currently we are borrowing money....

i dont think its right to borrow money and donate it to charity...

think i might go to the credit union tomorrow, take out another loan, then donate it to a non irish charity.... dosnt make sense. and if they feel the need to donate money i would prefer if they did to an irish charity, cancer research or something...

In reply to the bolded above....So are all others countries contributing to help the unfortunate people affected by the famine.

A lot of EU countries are funding Ireland to stay afloat and they themselves are borrowing ....What you decide to do with borrowed money is your prerogative but I do not think they world will collapse because Ireland decides to give €500,000 to people that are desperately in need of it...

As much as you would like to complain, the contribution (€500,000) that you have a problem with is probably a slight percentage of gate takings and drinks bought in Nite clubs around the country last night...

    whats so stupid about that???

Yeah it is not nearly as stupid as calling Africa a country.

i dont think anybody in the country would mind giving away money if we had it, the fact is we dont...

everyday we are hearing stories of people losing houses, jobs...
suicide is on the rise, and alot of this is due to financial pressure...
we shouldnt be tryin to sort out other states until we can sort ourselves.

I know it doesn't appeal to your compassionate side, but the action I am suggesting means only 100 people suffer in my scenario, the action you wish condoned (donating) means 5,000 people will suffer.

    It's called logic.

I see your point, but to so easily suggest they should be allowed to "die off", that's disturbing. Why not suggest getting the corruption and aid issues solved first?

what about us???? dont think our country can afford to give anything away

To all those saying that we shouldn't be giving them any aid:

Be careful what you wish for because if we don't pay this paltry amount now, what will we end up paying in our generous social welfare handouts of free buggies and free cars and free houses when they finally end up on our doorstep claiming asylum?

    Fucking Daily Mail readers.

You will surprised how many of those wars you refer to are funded and instigated by the west. It is also very rich that you are pontificating and advising other countries about sexual behaviour towards children!

But our hospitals and schools and rabble rabble rabble. I don't see why some Irish people don't give half their wages to the starving. Why don't you?

    Should've given them more.

We should help the countries that the Irish State invaded when we were a colonial power...

Why aren't the countries that had empires like Belgium and Germany doing more?

As horrible as it is to say, they should be allowed to die off. Africa's problems will not be solved by financial intervention from the western world. We are just prolonging their suffering and doing them more harm.

It'd probably be more beneficial to humanity to allow people with this level of ignorance to die off. That is a disgraceful post, you should be ashamed.

Better that than giving another cent to bondholders.

And you trust the lads over there?
It shouldn't be leaving the country, we're skint!

    Sorry but...
€500,000 to people who are literally starving to death with no roofs over their heads...
€85,000,000,000 to people who chose to invest in banks and refuse to accept the logical fact that sometimes when you gamble, you don't get your money back.

I'm failing to get even remotely upset about the former, to be quite honest.

Tell that to the poor bastard I saw on the Ha'penny Bridge today...

There are 15 places in Dublin City where homeless people can get a hot meal for free.

Is that your only reason for objecting assistance to help hungry/dying families and children?

About looking at it from from an empathetic point of view?

You should take your own advice. You should also not make assumptions about peoples knowledge.

I don't fund African wars and I don't accept responsibility for other Western countries that may do so. Nor do I accept my taxes being sent to Africa. If these other Western countries want to send their taxes to Africa, bully for them, this thread is about €500,000 of Irish money - if you cared to read the OP.

You obviously haven't got the slightest notion of my stance regarding the Catholic Church and it's abuse of children either.

People have point really,we can barely afford to look after ourself s now,on radio other day social services are only answering the most extreme cases thanks to the recruitment block in the HSE,other people have barely any money left after paying their mortgage, anyone who was self employed cannot get the dole and forced to do cash in hand jobs if they can find work and are been fcking chased by the revenue.

its disgraceful to see during the good times, the blight of homelessness wasn't address because we where all too busy building houses and selling them to each other and thanking the FF fuhrer for giving us such good wealth.

I have no issue with it. Ireland may be down the crapper but we are still living the lives of millionaires compared to that part of the world.

I hate to be a little sensationalist with the images, but I think there needs to be a bit of reality check when reading what people say.

Financial pressure in Ireland is not being able to afford a new car, go on a holiday, have a big house or go out on the lash. None of our problems are in any way comparable to the problems in Kenya. So what if you lose your house or job? You still have your health and family, both eminently more important than anything else.

I'm all for foreign aid, but not to African countries with a bigger defence budget than Ireland; who spend that amount on munitions to satisfy the ambitions of a despot!
