New UPC upgrade introducing remote record and "other great new features"

    OK, I've left the box off (using the physical power button at the rear) for ~10 mins and then allowed it to boot up, waited for 15 mins, then powered it back up again, but still no signal...
    This is hell for my wife!

    I'm in Sandyford.

    Going to try plugging the box out now.

    What area are you in? I'm in Rialto/James's Walk and have had a few problems with loss of signal before that were area wide.

    Fupping idiots UPC :mad:. Same happened to me in Inchicore - including missed scheduled recordings during today. Hardly a day's notice yet yet they go and mess me up anyway without me having done a thing with their "instructions". Plus my LCD display hasn't worked for weeks meaning I couldn't get any box status messages...

    Anyway, I solved the black screen somehow... After repeated switching the box on & off I started frustratedly pressing (thumping) random keys on the remote (while box was "on") and the Now & Next bar suddenly came up! So I scrolled right until I hit a channel (RTE) & pressed OK - and then there was light! Maybe one of you with the problem still could just press OK and see if Now & Next comes up directly?

    I then belatedly followed the instructions in the letter including switching off for 15 mins - no idea if this made any difference whatsoever - then deleting/resetting scheduled recordings etc "just-in-case" :mad:.

    For now I don't trust my recordings will happen properly - also on s/w v. 4.0.0.2E2.

    I hate UPC :mad:

    I spoke too soon - didn't notice that my guide wasn't working.

    I did a factory reset and it seems to be ok now. Fingers crossed anyway.

    Make a note of your scheduled recordings, then go through all of your recordings and reminders in "TV Planner" and delete them all, then you need to set them again.

    does this apply to everyone, will those in area's where broadband/hd/phone is still not available receive it?
    just wondering because i havnt gotten a letter yet.

    Should apply to all, no HD or phone in my area, yet we got letter for upgrade on 5th July.

    is the instructions for the update available online anywhere? did not receive any letter & all my channels have now gone & upc helpdesk is closed.

    The instructions are put your box on standby for mins. Turn back on.

    Theres not much more to it than that other than redoing your favourites and planner.

    so basically all this fuss is for a new app, why not just wait until the app is released before telling people to make the updates.

    The update sounds like a disaster. You lose your favourites, and items in your planner?? And, they even have to send you a letter about it? And to top it all off it actually does nothing (today)??

    Some decent programming could have saved them €243,750 (375,000 customers x cost of letter (10c for paper, envelope, printing plus 55c stamp).

    In fairness anyone out there that expected UPC to be able to roll something out without a hitch is very naive. We've seen it time and again that these guys literally couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery so the fact they have made a mess of this should be no surprise...

    Sounds like their totally rewriting the way the guide and recorder work. They probably had no choice, if the guide is going to be done via the modem it could be really good.

    seems typical of upc that they would make a big deal about something that their competitors have gave to their users long ago, its like theyve reinvented the wheel the fuss their making.
    their bringing out an app thats already available in other countries, big deal, give us our new channels that were promised to us months ago.

    Some 'update'. You could still nearly read half a novel between pressing guide & it actually loading.

    Either the hardware in the boxes (processing/memory), or the software coding...one or the other, is about ten years behind behind current standards. I do quite like UPC for their combined services, but the EPG on the non hd pvr is quite literally shambolic.

    Doing the guide via the modem would be a very bad idea, because it would introduce loads of additional failure possibilities. The guide is a one-way push of data so the best way is to leave it as a DVB-C Data Stream. The problem with the guide, both before and after the "update" is that it's way to slow in rendering.

    i don't know the guide via the modem could be much better. it'll could well possibly be faster and offer more features.

    Guide via modem means that it has to request the guide and wait for it to come back. Guide via a DVB data channel means it's stored on the STB already, just waiting to be rendered. DVB wins.

    with speeds of 100mb i don't think it would cause much of a delay, and if they did it right they can offer much more functionality.

    Not every UPC customer subscribes to broadband as well as TV. Not every UPC customer lives in a broadband-enabled area. UPC would end up having to maintain two parallel guide delivery systems with identical functionality, for no real advantage.

    Remote recording doesn't need a return path - that could all go over the DVB-C data channel. (Sky's remote record goes over the satellite.)

    Seriously though, if I can use a normal site on my phone to record that will do. Good upgrade, but years too late.

    Symbian is dead.
    I would like to see more companies developing apps for Samsungs new Bada OS. Im sure its going to get more popular!!!
