that german bus was only luvverley

The German owner has it over 20 years, its a 1961 Setra with a 4 litre diesel engine in the back, he got it in Lourdes, France, as he said himself "you know where the miracles and holy water is, the only water it had was coming through the holes in the roof":D

He got off the ferry yesterday and on his way into Dublin, some guy on an old motorbike banged on the window and says See you at Terenure and thats the first he'd heard of the show. The hotel he staying at looked up the show and he came along for a look today, sound chap. let anybody who wanted get on the bus for a look around.

I saw that German bus parked on Victoria Quay (outside Guinness brewery) on Saturday afternoon coming home from town.
So sorry I missed the terenure Show today but we tossed a coin for the show or the leinster final and the hurling won!

Thought some of you might be interested in this snap.

I was on a weekend break in Clare the other week and my OH had just finished taking photos of this well known pub front.
We had started to walk back up the street when we heard this old fashioned hooter and looked behind to see this old vintage car driving towards us. It was like a snapshot from years ago as it passed the old fashioned pubfront :)

Love that German bus also, but sadly never goit to take a good look at it.

It reminds me of some of the buses made in the 60's by Ogle design.

One question........that Granada Garda car...........SSI 910 ........the log talks about it being purchase in Feb/Mar '84 etc..... but that is a May '83 (roughly) reg......so where was it for almost 12 months beforehand ??

You're right. I just had a look in my archive and found the car. These pictures are approx. 2 years old.

btw. it's easy to drive 4cyl 1.8 litre car daily as it's not that heavy on petrol like the 3.0 V6 ^^

Here is the website for the Setra bus, it seems they use it as a tour bus that can be rented out for trips but the driver was on his own in Ireland. The bus is a Setra S6 from 1961, one of 1200 and was put back on the road in 1996 after a 4 year restoration. 21 seats, 90bhp Henschel diesel engine, 6.7m long, 2.25wide, 2.8m high, 6t GVW.

Here is the page on this trip to Scotland and Ireland, he is somewhere near Kilkenny at the moment so keep an eye out. He described the traffic in Dublin as "hellish" ;) but was very taken by the reception in Terenure, seems the organisers spoke to him personally and apologised for not having a special prize for him, but he got a commemorative plate (!).

They also have this bus here for rent, a 1979 S208. Setra are built in Ulm, which is where those buses are registered so its a nice touch. I have mates who used to drive buses from Germany to Nepal in the 80's and 90's, they always swore by Setra, reckoned they were a lot better than Mercedes, ironically Setra is now owned by Mercedes.

Wow. That is some commute! I bet he has some stories to tell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,003 ✭✭✭bijapos

There was quite a few of them, used to be between 10 and 30 people in 3 to 8 buses. They would sell them in Nepal stay there a few months, head home and do it all over again. Twas good money at the time I hear. Some of the stories are mental, but I've driven Europe to West and Central Africa about 30 times myself over the past 20 years and had some mad experiences there myself.

Theres nothing like a proper road trip. :)

Does anyone know who owns the '48 Plymouth?
I'm looking for one of these and was hoping to catch up with the owner if this one is for sale.

Hes got ''IVVCC'' on the front so he must be a member of the IVVCC (Irish veteran, vintage car club) - www.ivvcc.ie.
    Try contacting them.

I doubt it's for sale, AFAIK the owner has had it for years.

Not a great photo unfortunately, but this '68 Europa S2 looked to be in great (restored) order.

Also met a 308GTB earlier but didn't get a snap.
