I was a bit baffled by the 26. I presumed it was 26 out of 30. Cant believe I was marked 26% for an essay. Done 8 essays this year and the other seven were 62% or above!

Definitely question that then, could have been a mix up.

For those wondering about compensation, if it applies it will have been done so already

if you got an "F" in one module - does that mean you have to repeat the exam in august or the entire year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭argonaut

"S" means I've got to repeat the CA component, right?

But... since the CA and exam parts are both worth 50% for this module, and you can only, according to the module, repeat the exam, shouldn't just be doing the exam again?

    *confused*

Not sure. It states that R should indicate a re-sit.

Pretty sure that means repeat the exam, I got one F back at christmas

I am not a DCU student...so I may be incorrect.

But having read around, from past threads too it appears like an F is an out and out Fail. R is what is used when it's possible to pass if you re-sit an exam in August. F seems only to appear if you've not passed Continuous Assessment. I read it's University policy that students must pass both CA and the Exam (either directly or by compensation). It still might be possible to pass the module, but only if it's possible to re-sit the CA as well as the Exam, which is decided on a module by module basis.

I do hope I'm wrong on this, and would be delighted to be corrected by somebody in the know! I suppose the only way to be 100% sure is to call Registry tomorrow to confirm.

The one I got an F on had no CA, was just the exam. I'm 99.99% I can repeat it in August, would be stupid if I couldnt. If not there is going to be a lot of angry people from my course

Ah yeah, that'd be very silly. But why not just give you an R then?

    This is the Key:

    P - Pass
    PH - Pass with Honours
    PF - Passed Linked Module
    F - Fail
FN - Failed: Time Owing Clinical Practice
A - Fail: Absent from Exam
    AO - Attendance Only
    C - Pass by Compensation
    E - Exemption D - Deferred
    I - Certified Illness
    Pending - Pending
    R - Re-sit Exam Element
S - Resit Assessment Element as per module information
    W - Failed a Coursework Element
X - Failed an Examination Element

I imagine I got the F as I failed the module entirely, not just a bit of it as R (resit exam eliment) implies. I failed the exam, which was the entire mode of assessment.

Needless to say if I have to repeat a year because I failed Constitutional Law when I'm just after doing really well in Advanced Constitutional Law someone will be getting a steaming pile of sh!t on their doorstep.

A point well made, I just home the same rings through for people who did badly in CA (e.g. make Exam worth 100%, let them re-sit exam).

Has anyone gotten a R? I have one resit for a Semester 1 exam where it's clearly outlined how to pass
The module is assessed by continuous assessment (weighted at 30%) and a written exam at the end of the course (weighted at 70%). A clear pass is obtained by achieving at least 40% overall. The autumn repeats use the same continuous assessment marks as the apply for the summer exams; there is no opportunity to repeat continuous assessment for the autumn exams..

So surely it should say R instead of F? Weird.

I have one R from Semester one, but I passed the CA and failed the exam.

Did you get over 40% overall including your CA? Did you fail your CA but do really well in the Exam to make it over 40%?

I know somebody with R, but they passed CA and failed the exam.

After some searching iv found this for my own course.
My transcript has 32R for module X. What does that mean?

That depends whether or not you are in Year 4. If you are in Year 4 then the Mother & Child system applies. Otherwise read on.

The 32 is the final module mark which is the weighted average of the exam mark and the continuous assessmnet mark. The R indicates that you have failed the exam component but passed the continuous assessment component. If you received this mark at the semester 1 or 2, then you need to repeat the exam in the resits in August. If you received this mark at the resits, then you need to repeat that module in the next academic year.

    Which contradicts the following,
The module is assessed by continuous assessment (weighted at 30%) and a written exam at the end of the course (weighted at 70%). A clear pass is obtained by achieving at least 40% overall. The autumn repeats use the same continuous assessment marks as the apply for the summer exams; there is no opportunity to repeat continuous assessment for the autumn exams..

Guys,I'm devastated.Got a 50 in my thesis and my overall grade dropped to a 59 so just under a 2.1.Is there any way at all I can get this bumped up?My masters will withdraw my offer unless I get my 2.1....
    :(

Ok so I just want to check something:

One of my modules is worth 50% CA and then 50% exam.
I got 50% in the CA and then I got 35% in my exam.
My final mark is therefore 43%.
But as you can see above, I have failed my exam by 5%.
Does this mean that I have to repeat the exam?

Likewise in another module, the CA is worth 40% and the exam is worth 60%
I got 91% in the CA and I got 28% in my exam.
My final mark for this is 53%.
So do I also have to repeat this exam?

    I greatly appreciate your help!

how do they calculate the overall mark?

I did 9 modules over 2 semesters. Is it as simple as adding all 9 marks and then divide by 9 to get an average or is it more complicated than that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭JemimaPD

I got a "F" mark in one module based on not passing the CA and end of year exam. I've been doing some reading in the Marks & Standards section. It states in the Regulations pertaining to Assessment

Section 6.2.2 Where different components of assessment within a module (continuous assessment and final exam assessment) contribute to the final mark, there will be no requirement that a minimum mark be obtained in any one component.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the way i'm reading it is - if you receive a "F" grade you should still be allowed to repeat the exam even if you failed the CA part to get a higher mark to pass the year.

Does it say "P" as your result? If so you passed overall.
