Please be aware that we are experiencing problems with our main web server.
We are working hard to restore service as soon as possible,

Certainly not looking for a rise. The reason the website has crashed is because everyone is furiously refreshing at the same time.

Delighted for you - I won't be able to apply for my M.A. until I get results though so I will continue to refresh furiously.

Last semester they were posted around 10am, but then most students would have been in lectures instead of abusing the F5 button which is no doubt further delaying the results

How hard is it to have servers that dont crash all the bloody time? Last year they went down in September, at Christmas and coming up to the summer exams, bloody joke.

It's the same every semester. You would think they might prepare for it by doing simple stuff like staggering dates for results or even emailing the results out during the night so everybody wouldn't be hitting that F5 constantly. People would still be logging on to portal but at least there'd be none of the constant F5s.

Ah well, I've been in DCU for a few semesters. I'm sure in January 2012 people will be posting in this thread asking when the results are out and that the servers are slow :D

Under almost any other circumstances, this scenario would have resulted in someone being disciplined or fired; at the very least a lesson would have been learned.

Alas, year after year, we are faced with the same situation. Says a lot about DCU's ISS.

Disciplined or fired for what exactly?

It's not ISS's fault that thousands of people are constantly F5'ing a web page.
Are the employees supposed to make new servers appear out of thin air?

Seriously? Fire the IT guys whenever there's a hardware issue?

Why dont they buy some new servers? The site isnt reliable, it goes down when you need it, and when you are in a course like me where access to databases through the dcu site is a must you are rightly fcuked

fire the IT guys for failing to notice a pattern between hardware issues and results and adjusting their practices accordingly.

It's their job to ensure that this cack does not happen and it has consistently in the 3 years that I've been here.

Yes, they should notice a pattern, and then what?
Make expensive equipment appear out of thin air?

As well as the fact that they'd have to host their entire student database elsewhere (or create a separate account for everyone), and have no control over the situation if anything does go wrong, this would be justified for the sake of what, the 2 days a year it's needed?

I said adjust their practices, stagger results maybe, give certain times and passcodes to different schools.

I guess, but I imagine if they did that you'd have even more complaints by whoever doesn't get their results straight away.

    Lads,

In fairness the deadline is still 2.5 hours away :pac:

    Good Luck everyone :)

What difference does an hour or two make? The results are still going to be the same at 9am or 9pm...and its not like those applying for a masters need to apply for their course the very next day!

The portal page ultimately is a separate account for everyone. I think it would be worth the extra cash, at least extra servers would be available when required. They probably already spent a lot of money repairing servers during the year. They crashed twice near the end of the semester.
