A PETTY row over driving slowly away from a set of traffic lights resulted in Ireland's first road-rage killing.
Two drivers clashed verbally as they made off in the same direction.
But the disagreement turned ugly when one driver grabbed a hurley from the boot of his vehicle and attacked Englishman Raymond Bates, hitting him several times on the head and body.
Mr Bates died in hospital on Thursday night after the attack in Sandymount, south Dublin, on Sunday evening.
Gardai are now awaiting the outcome of a post-mortem examination on the body of the victim before deciding on their next move.
The post-mortem was due to have been carried out yesterday but was delayed pending the arrival of his medical records from his native England.
The 49-year-old victim was battered on the head and body with a hurley after an earlier verbal confrontation with the driver of another vehicle.
Mr Bates had been living in a rented apartment in Sandymount, where he was working with a construction company laying a gas pipeline.
He was a regular visitor here on contract work and spent the rest of the time with his family in a three-bedroomed, semi-detached house at Dinting Road, Peterlee, Durham.
Gardai are following a definite line of inquiry and have already interviewed the driver of the other vehicle involved in the incident.
The man, who left the scene after the clash, spoke to gardai after his vehicle was traced.
Relatives and friends of Mr Bates, who had travelled from England to be at his bedside in Beaumont Hospital, returned home yesterday afternoon.
There were emotional scenes prior to their departure as they gathered at the Regency Hotel, close to the airport.
Mr Bates's wife, Brenda, who was on crutches, and the couple's three sons were hugged by friends. Many of the group were visibly upset and some were in tears.
A man identifying himself as Mr Bates's brother told the Irish Independent that they were too devastated to comment on the tragedy.
Meanwhile, neighbours of Mr Bates in Peterlee spoke of their shock over the death.
A friend of the family delivered a condolence card to the house yesterday afternoon. He said: "I'm sending a card to Brenda to say how sorry I am to hear about her husband. Ray was a happy-go-lucky kind of man. They are a nice family."
The road rage incident -- the first in Ireland to result in a death -- took place at the junction of Sandymount Road, Newbridge Avenue and Tritonville Road in Sandymount, at around 7.25pm on Sunday.
    Argument
It stemmed apparently from an argument between the drivers of two vehicles as they took off in the same direction from a set of traffic lights.
One driver was unhappy that the other was not moving quickly away and it resulted in an exchange of words.
The driver of the other vehicle-- who was accompanied by two passengers, including a child, and who is from the locality -- then jumped out and grabbed a hurley from the boot.
He began striking Mr Bates's car on the bonnet and when the Englishman got out of the car, he was struck several times on the head and body with the hurley.
The driver of the other vehicle did not remain at the scene after the incident.
Mr Bates returned home, but was unwell the next morning and feeling disoriented. A friend sought help and Mr Bates was taken by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital but was later transferred to Beaumont where he died on Thursday night.
A number of witnesses have already been interviewed by gardai and officers are now seeking passengers on a No 2 bus, which passed through the area at the time.

Anyone who witnessed the incident has been asked to contact gardai at Irishtown garda station, tel 01 6669600

Rant and Rave in your own car but seriously, what makes you think you're any better at driving?

Generally i am a calm, quiet and rational person...that is until i get in my car. I frequently lose the head and have been known to get out of the car and scream, rant and rave about peoples stupidity on the road.
This backfired on me a few years ago when i started freaking out because someone was driving up the ass of my car, when i got to the lights i threw open the door and walked back to the car behind me, smacked the drivers window and was just about to let out a string of abuse when i looked at the driver and saw a frail approx 80 y/o women who looked like she was gonna have a stroke on the spot. I quickly retreated back to the car and drove off feeling guilty. However i still continue to scream and swear at stupid drivers... ie people that cut me up, don't indicate, drive too slow in the fast lane etc.

    So are you like this....
Is this normal or do i need psychiatric assessment?

OMG! You get out of your car? You almost attacked an old lady? You have probably taken away her confidence and now she will be forever housebound because of your behaviour. Feel ashamed. Feel very ashamed. I get annoyed about the same things but the worst I would do would be to flash lights and beep at them....

OP,you are a muppet of the highest order. You should always look in the mirror to see who has peeved you before doing anything.

When you were approaching the ladys car you had to have seen how elderly she was.You are failing on a couple of points so far but the most telling one, is that call yourself a female.

Sad sign of the times when wimmens are becoming so aggressive. You are an anomaly though,as I find female drivers(crap:pac:)more willing to apologise and acknowledge mistakes in traffic.

You are a mad bint and I pray that you dont have kids, you warrior of the roads.

    Never,ever,leave your car.

Yeah, as much as I'd like to give someone a bollocking for being a **** driver, I'm also aware that there are some very, very dangerous loopers out there who will be quite happy to give you a fast pass to an early grave should you give them an excuse.

    Not worth it.

60kph drivers make me cry with despair. They are exactly the type of people that make me wish I had rockets on the car to blow them out of my way.

I never got this. Either have the balls to do it or fuck up and be civil. The OP had some road rage, no-one got hurt and the world's still spinning. No need for almost name calling.

OP, deep breaths and never get out of the car. You'll either kill or be killed.

Don't be that hard man retard.

I'd just laugh in your face if you did that with me OP, but you'll get the wrong person some day. If they do nothing there and then, they'll follow you and slash your tyres or something.

You're the one that looks silly if you carry on like that.

That's it exactly. No matter what another car driver does to you as soon as you get out of your car to remonstrate you're in the wrong and a Garda will crucify you for it saying it's road-rage and that you're taking the law into your own hands. Best thing to do is count to ten, and if it's still a big deal then report the other driver to the cops.

A couple of months ago I was practically ran off the road by another driver, my own vehicle at the time was faster than his and I could have went after him, but I didn't. About 3km up the road the same guy was pulled in at the side of the road by an unmarked Garda car with blue lights flashing. Justice was served.

A guy got out of his car with his mates because he thought I wronged him by not letting him out in front of me... He also had a young boy with him, about 7 or 8. He was quite annoyed, but his ignorance to the rules of the road lead to this uncomfortable situation. I wound down my window a little and he screamed at me to get out of the car. I took his reg and reported him to the Gardai. :)

Another time some eastern European twat driving a 00 BMW with completely blacked out windows was lane hopping between the Red Cow and Inchicore. I indicated to go into the middle lane after I passed a slow moving transit, the BMW driving asshat had the same idea, but made a very fast maneuver, we nearly crashed. I beeped at him and he had a caniption.

Driving in the bus lane, he undertook me and stopped in front of me on several occasions. As his windows were completely blacked out, I couldn't see who or how many were in the car. I called 999. Every time he stopped I had enough room to go around him. Cars behind me seen what happened, they put on the hazards.

As I am on the phone to the Gardai, he steps out of the car. I tell the Beangard on the phone that I think it's ok and told her I would ring back if there were any problems. This guy was a tiny runt that resembled a boy more so than a man. He was pretty angry getting out of the car, but as he approached he seemed to have calmed down. He didn't reach my car but got back into his own instead and drove off. Reported him to the Gardai afterwards. :)

There are plenty of incidents on our roads every single day. There have been deaths due to road rage. OP you need to cop on to yourself and get your anger management problems sorted out before you rage at the wrong person. From your OP, I don't think you can continue too long before this happens. If you have an anger management issue and cannot control your temper while on our roads, don't get in your car. You are endangering other road users with your outlandish antics and over-reactions.

So you got back into your car, but didn't apologise to the other driver or somehow reassure her she wasn't about to be beaten up?

Getting angry, pointless; getting out, stupid; getting away with your tail between your legs having probably made the woman afraid for her safety and without redressing the situation; very, very low and you should be ashamed of yourself.

If that had been me, I'd have stopped & informed the garda about what the driver had done to you :)

I'm quite a laid back person, I do get annoyed by other drivers, but it takes a lot for me to even beep at another car. I am however, the kind of person who likes nothing more than to piss off the aggressive drivers or drivers who are trying to intimidate me and/or doing something silly/stupid or ignorant!

For example:I've been in the fast lane going at the speed limit & passing out slower cars and I've had people flying up to the rear of my car behind me, and driving behind me, flashing lights - this kind of behaviour makes me stay in the fast lane just to piss them off! I'm not going to let another driver push me around or intimidate me.

    Same as that.
I first hit the road on a piddly 125 motor bike but got trained by an ex garda trainer so knew how to stand my ground when doing the speed limit. I would regularly refuse to give way in the fast lane (on the occasion when i had enough tail wind to do the legal limit:D) I was unintimidated on a tiny bike so now that Im in a car I happily go head to head with trucks and tossers in 4x4's and BMW's (not saying that all 4x4s and Beemers are tossers:rolleyes:)

I'm sorry to say I suffer from driving insanity also, but I'd adhering to a strict regimen of chilled music, and self observance to attempt to over come it. It's partially successful. I tend to blow my gasket when I come across people in the city obeying the speed limit - I'm in a rush, and I'm on very important business, and I believe the next person to get to that red traffic light is going to win a prize.... :(

I can indentify with you - it angers me when people pull out in front of you, dont indicate, randomly stop because they have seen a mate on the other side of the road, the list goes on!
My WORST habit tho, is when my very mild tempered husband is driving..
If another driver does something stupid, he never toots the horn!
So I lean over him and honk it as hard as I can..He really gets mad when i do that...:(
