Did anyone here have any trouble with the recovery manager? I've followed the instructions on www.orangesanfrancisco.co.uk to the letter but it's hanging at the Recovery Install stage. Hooking it up to my PC isn't working either. All that shows up is the SD card :(

Try uninstall and reinstall the app

You can also try one click recovery from the market

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,673 ✭✭✭Stavro Mueller

I tried the uninstall/reinstall/clear cache thing. No use. I also checked the MD5 and the download is ok.

Is One Click recovery the name of that? I can't find it on the android market?

@ shadowninty & Twiki. Thanks very much for you very helpful suggestions. After I posted last night, I searched the Modaco site in a further effort to get things right and found a file called Recovery-Clockwork-2.5.2.3-blade.img. I downloaded it and lo and behold RM recognised it and finally went on to install Swedish Spring:):):). I rebooted and hey presto! Success:D:D:D. Absolutely great to have gotten rid of that Orange rubbish, even if it kept me up till 2.15am:eek:

I had a somewhat similar problem and the file listed above solved it for me.

Thanks again for that. I checked No Frills CPU and my phone seems to at 604mhz for max frequency and 112mhz for min frequency. They seem to be the lowest options available. I've set the govenor part to "power save " now though from "on demand"so hopefully that'll help.

And it was 7 hours sleep that the phone and myself had.:D

I use 691/122 on the Smartass Governor setting......when I check stats on wake-up, for past 5 secs, it shows >90% at 122MHz......during sleep.....

I have set the governor as Smartass, which is a variety of interactive....works well for me so far.

If you feel you need profiles provided by SetCPU, you can download this app for free, donate version, if you are a member of XDA, here is the link:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419

Up to date Zip files for all versions available in first post!!

If you like you can donate!!!

However, the need for profiles when we have various governor settings available in No Frills is questionable, not least by the No Frills dev:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911917
Q: Do you plan on adding profiles? I'd love to select a different profile for when my screen is off!
A: Short answer is "No". I think that profiles are useless, because that's what governors are already: a profile for your CPU to follow while changing frequencies.
Adding profiles would mean adding the need for more memory, the need to run more often, check if something is happening (screen on, screen off and so on)... all of this without a real benefit.

Thanks for getting back so quickly guys but still having difficulty here. Have downloaded the various files to my laptop and have 'sent' them to my phone but cannot even find them on the phone using 'filer' (although I can see they are there somewhere when i look at the phone's contents on laptop).

Question I have now is how I find the files such as UniversalAndroot.apk on my phone and copy and install it on sdcard? Sorry about the probably very basic questions. Or alternatively am I sending them correctly to the phone in the first place? (have been copying them or sending them as I'd do with mp3 files).

On the other score i.e. not having any access to the internet from phone I think it might be something to do with orange and that maybe debranding the phone (as i'm trying to do) will resolve that issue. I have meteor broadband to go on laptop but not sure how I could use that for phone. Can see other networks which are secure so presumably phone not
an issue with phone malfunctionning but more probably Orange making it as difficult as possible.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and I hope my explanations have made some sense.

Hi there, just noticed your posts there, regarding WiFi BB on your phone....

I have meteor broadband to go on laptop but not sure how I could use that for phone.

Can I ask if this is just the USB Dongle/Stick on your LAptop?

If yes, you won't be able to use this for WiFi on your phone, as you have probably found out already. This would only work for one device, your Lappy.

Meteor have a HotSpot, which allows connectivity for up to 5 wifi enabled devices.

Meteor also gives Free access to Eircom Public WiFi hotspots

If you can't get BB, as in DSL or Fibre, this may help.

    Cheers.

The first post really needs this kinda thing added to it

I agree. The original instructions on the first post are a bit out of date but it would be great if they could be updated and the info you gave me added to it. There's so much stuff on the android.modaco.com forums that trying to find simple answers is next to impossible.

Am I missing something, do I need a driver or something that will allow me to connect my phone to my laptop via USB and be able to view my photos?

Nope, it should literally plug 'n' play! Your phone needs to be on and you need to go into the phone's mass storage mode (check your Notification bar after you connect the cable).

To summerise, is this a geeks phone? always fiddleing with odds and sods to improve it. Try this try that, oh thats not stable, uninstall reinstall........

Its well priced but is it a Linux type thing, a project.

I just want a phone to listen to Tunein internet radio.

    Input welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,169 ✭✭✭ronano

no it's not a geek phone, you could happily use it with the original rom on it and it would be fine for tunein radio. The phone is great because it's well supported and exceptional value but even out of the box it's a great phone for price and spec

The great thing about this phone is that it is heavily developed for and there's a vast range of options. But if you want simple you can have simple, you have a choice of what you wanna make of it. When I first got it I didn't keep a ROM on there for more than a week. Since using Swedish Spring I have consistently kept it on the phone for, what, over a month now, and could go the rest of the phone's life without changing it again if I choose to. So it can be a toy or a useful and easy tool, depending on what the user wants.

Has anyone got FIFA 2010 or PES 2011 for this phone? I'm tempted to buy one but just wondering does it work on this phone?

Also since upgrading to Swedish Spring my wifi disconnects all the time. I got the advanced wifi lock app whic works but it wrecks the battery as it prevents the phone from sleeping. Are there any other fixes?

    PES works fine
Blade wifi fix from the Market

Blade wifi fix from the Market
It works but it only re-activates the Wi-Fi when the phone wakes, it doesn't keep the Wi-Fi from shutting down completely. It's good if that's what you want, but as you said, harpstilidie, the alternative is to stop your phone from sleeping. I use 'Advanced WiFi Lock' also and use the timeout feature. The severe drain in battery is caused by the Wi-Fi being on constantly, not because the phone isn't sleeping.

For instance. If you use 'Advanced WiFi Lock' and your Wi-Fi is switched off, your battery consumption is no more than normal. Sometimes, though, you want your Wi-Fi to go off when the phone sleeps, other times you'd like your Wi-Fi to stick around. Using the app's timeout feature will keep the Wi-Fi turned on for 20 minutes before it automatically disables it. The paid version of the app allows you to scale the time to less than or beyond 20 minutes. But if you want to save battery, forget the 'Blade WiFi Fix' as it's very one-dimensional, it's simply used to automatically re-activate the Wi-Fi, nothing more. I'd advise you to continue using 'Advanced WiFi Lock' so you can get the best of both worlds. I've been doing using it for the last week with the timeout enabled and it works great, and your battery life won't suffer. Before I began using the timeout feature in the app, my battery drained by 40% in 12 hours of complete idleness.

Thanks DECEiFER, yeah I'd like my wifi to stay on all the time while at home anyway just for emails and say score notifications for example. In 2.1 it stayed on even while the phone slept and I had no battery isues. I guess I'll just have to enable 'Advanced Wifi Lock' when I need it just and hopefully remember to switch it off to prevent battery drain. It's hardly healthy to prevent the phone from sleeping all the time is it?

To be honest with you all it's going to do is prevent a few components from going into power-save mode. I use SetCPU to listen for a screen off event and set the CPU clock speed down to the minimum of 122MHz and maximum of 320MHz, otherwise while the screen is on, the minimum is 320MHz and the maximum is 691MHz. Doing that helps save battery power further on top of being kind to the CPU. Will my phone will be alive in a year's time? Who knows!? I'd place good odds on yes, just as good as if I was using the stock 2.1 ROM with little customization.

If you need your Wi-Fi to be on all the time and the timeout doesn't suit your needs, you will just need to get into a routine of turning the Wi-Fi off manually. I'd say it's easy enough routine to get used to with a bit of time.

Doesn't work sadly. Pinned my hopes on that too at one stage.

I have to go back on one aspect of what I mentioned a few posts up. The "wake-lock" state that the phone goes into with 'Advanced WiFi Lock' only applies when the Wi-Fi is enabled, so turning off the Wi-Fi, and testing the battery drain based on my assumption that the phone would be kept awake in any situation so long as the app was running, would not be entirely accurate.

If I use the 'No frills CPU' that comes with Swedish Spring and set the CPU clock speed to min 122MHz and max 320MHz will this help save battery? What implications does that have on the phone?

I have this a few weeks now. Still love it, really good phone. The battery is ok but on WIFI it is simply diabolical sorry. I can charge it to 100% at night before bed and surf for awhile. It will loss 40% no bother within 20 minutes!!

Anyone else experience this type of battery drain on wifi?

If the battery wasn't this bad it would be the perfect phone, but tbh I had thoughts of throwing it on adverts since getting it because of the battery but I really don't want to :)

That seems a lot AntiRip. Definitely shouldn't be that bad. Must be something else using up the battery as well or it's defect.

    That's quite bad

It should be noted that batteries discharge from 100 to 90% very quickly to prevent battery damage
