I'll have a look through this thread this evening after work as I assume its in here somewhere!

I''m imagining I've to back everything up and start from scratch!

thanks for the tip, didn't know that it made a diff. any other benefits?

    Here is the thread; http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blade-roms-rom-customisation/337798/gen1-to-gen2-tpt-upgrade/

If you Nandroid your current set up you may be able to get back to it (but with Gen2 Recovery and Boot image (kernel))

Yup thank you very much for your help,it's been much appreciated:)
I have Swedish Spring up and running now,it was easier than I thought in the end. So far,so delighted:)

Two questions left, is my phone now rooted or should I set about rooting it?
    Is z4root good for this?
    Thank you again!:)

    That's great altogether....!!

Did I recommend the Z4Root, can't remember, but if I did I meant to recommend the one colleague shadowninty mentioned, Kallts modded Z4Root

    ...if not I apologise.

Anyway, you are most definitely rooted now.

Have you tried LauncherPro yet, IMHO much better than what is included with SS5....free from Market, click the link!!

.....smooth and creamy like a pint of Moneygall Guinness

    ....and goes down a treat!!

    Enjoy!!!

Is there anyway to preserve battery? I've noticed that my battery lasts around 8 hours. Last night i switched it to airplane mode and killed tasks in task manager and it still went from 40%charge to 0% by morning.

Hopefully next time next time I'll be back in this thread it'll be to answer a question!:)Thanks for all the help:)

It'll take a but for the battery to break in
Best to turn off wifi and Bluetooth off and put phone in flight mode are night
Killing tasks wastes more battery than it waves by and large

40% to 0% in one sleep? Jesus man, you must be running a ****ton! Either that or your battery isn't up to standard for whatever reason.

What I do is I overclock when the phone is active but I set the clock speed to very low when the screen is off (I use SetCPU for this by adding a profile to listen for the screen off event). If I use my phone moderately, I can get up to four days without charging. But at night when I'm sleeping, I wouldn't lose more than 5% from the battery, and that's without killing tasks.

Oh wow you get 4 days!Thats not looking good for my battery then.I will try setCPU as you suggest and hope for the best.

SetCPU is a paid-for app. If you want something for free, try the one that comes with Swedish Spring (it's called No-Frills CPU - downloadable from the Market if you're not using Swedish Spring) and see if it has the same functionality.

If your phone is simply sitting idle, there is no way it should lose 40% of its power in the space of a night's sleep, unless you sleep for two days straight!!! Even for a new unbroken-in battery, that's far too extreme if you ask me.

Thanks again for that. I checked No Frills CPU and my phone seems to at 604mhz for max frequency and 112mhz for min frequency. They seem to be the lowest options available. I've set the govenor part to "power save " now though from "on demand"so hopefully that'll help.

And it was 7 hours sleep that the phone and myself had.:D

Are you not running a Custom ROM?
You should be able to set it above 600MHz
(beware of set on boot option, some processors can go higher than others )

I can set it higher yes but not lower.I presumed that to save battery I should be setting it has to be as low as possible. Is that wrong?
What would be the average setting that people are setting it at for general use and power saving?
I am running swedish spring btw!:)

    Thanks!

Bought the OSF the other day in the UK after losing my phone over there. Contacted O2 for new sim (same number) and arranged the modest 'simplicity' package with data. Unlocked the phone easily enough thanks to the modaco and chrislowthian site but have been unable to debrand the phone despite the pretty easy sounding directions. As someone not really conversant with smartphone technology I am unsure whether the comments on downloading suggest downloading to your pc/laptop first or require direct download to phone. This is where my real problem possibly begins......I cannot connect to the internet through my phone and seem to be only able to call and send messages.

Any help or advice well appreciated. Alternatively if anyone knows of a shop in Dublin that doesn't charge a fortune for doing this and installing android 2.2 or even someone on here for a modest fee!

If you're really confused you can install a ROM using the TPT method

    android.modaco.com/content/zte-blade-roms-rom-customisation/337798/gen1-to-gen2-tpt-upgrade/

You don't need a PC but its quicker and faster with it

You basically need to unzip the file to your memory, and boot with volume up + menu
You then install a custom ROM from your SD card

A custom ROM will sort your network data

    I setanta159.

Do you have a wireless internet connection in your home? That is a router and modem from eircom or upc etc?

If you do and have entered the wireless password correctly in the phone then you should have no trouble connecting to the internet.

if you.ve entered the password but your phone isn't connecting then theres probably something wrong with your phone and you might need to return it

There are full instructions for installing a rom on your phone using a usb cable to connect your phone to the
pc on www.sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk if you scroll down past the first section of each guide. The first section if each guide relies on the ability to download to your phone.
For the usb instructions you need to able to download to your pc.

Those speeds are fine. I actually use 691MHz as my maximum (go any higher on my chip and lock-ups will occur) and have been for months without issue (ever since Japanese Jellyfish). But here's the deal, I use 320MHz as my minimum value. Why? It increases performance somewhat. The thing is, I set a profile for when the phone goes into sleep mode (screen off), the minimum is then 122MHz. I think the real battery-saver for me is that I also set the maximum at 320MHz during sleep, so any nasty background apps trying to run something of a power station when I'm sleeping or when my phone is idle on my desk, etc., won't have much luck. My battery life increased only after adding the profile that does that. You should give it a go.

If No-Frills CPU doesn't have such a feature, SetCPU is worth a purchase.

Thanks for getting back so quickly guys but still having difficulty here. Have downloaded the various files to my laptop and have 'sent' them to my phone but cannot even find them on the phone using 'filer' (although I can see they are there somewhere when i look at the phone's contents on laptop).

Question I have now is how I find the files such as UniversalAndroot.apk on my phone and copy and install it on sdcard? Sorry about the probably very basic questions. Or alternatively am I sending them correctly to the phone in the first place? (have been copying them or sending them as I'd do with mp3 files).

On the other score i.e. not having any access to the internet from phone I think it might be something to do with orange and that maybe debranding the phone (as i'm trying to do) will resolve that issue. I have meteor broadband to go on laptop but not sure how I could use that for phone. Can see other networks which are secure so presumably phone not
an issue with phone malfunctionning but more probably Orange making it as difficult as possible.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and I hope my explanations have made some sense.

I would do it as it says on www.sanfranciscoandroid.co.uk. Have you got clockwork mod installed on your phone? You don't need to use the phone to look for the files, just copy and paste them onto the sd card and you should find them in clockwork mod. Make sure you check if it's GEN 1 or GEN 2 as well.

Believe me, if I was able to unlock, root and put a custom ROM on this phone without any experience at all, so can you :)

Cheers for the help lads. Have all the necessary files in place and anticipate an easier time of it tomorrow but heading for bed now. The major problem I had this evening was the 'filer' app installed with Orange which is crap, almost indecipherable and the fact that o2 had not set up my sim for data so had to install new APN etc. This enabled me to go to android market and download a free file manager app, allowing me to see the files I had downloaded via laptop. Of course once I got the internet up and running the orange Filer app worked! I'm no techie but learnt a lot tonight and would gladly have given the o2 tech desk a piece of my mind......if I had gotten through of course!

Be sure to start by running the app, Ask Mr Pigfish. It will tell you if your phone is first or second generation and that will dictate which directions you should follow. You can download it on your phone from the market using 3g if you havent yet downloaded it.
    Good luck! :)

I don't have battery drain issues on CM... leaving wifi on?

No, I had everything turned off. Flashed a clean rom too and it was still there. Completely gone now with SS. I'm getting 3 days out of it with moderate usage when I stick it in airplane mode at night.

I'll probably go back to CM when it's stable but I'm happy enough with SS for now.

Jesus, I'm finding the battery life on the SF very bad. I'd charge it in the morning and would have to charge it again 3-4pm again. I don't leave on the wifi on or anything like that. Just making a few phone calls, texts and checking email/facebook/twitter every couple of hours or so.

I've charged it to 100% and did the wipe battery stats and charged it back up again but didn't make any difference.

    Something badly wrong there.

    +1

I think you're looking at a RMA. Maybe you'll get lucky if you ask them to just send you a new battery and forget the whole process of having them taking your phone away from you for any period.

Some great info there thank you a million.

Last night I used no frills CPU and set the power to "power saving".When I up today it was still had charge left. I've tried powersave during the day while I wasnt using it and it has certainly made a difference. Its a bit annoying having to be constantly changing setttings when you want to use it so I will get setcpu and try your instructions. It'll make a difference to get more than 12 hours out it. Thanks again.:)

Yeah man, that must really suck having to charge your phone twice daily.

You can set a few custom profiles in SetCPU. Another example is "Charging." If you're not in any rush, lob the min and max up full and enjoy every MHz. :)

Good luck with it, maybe post back if you notice any improvement and recommend it to others facing similar difficulties?

EDIT: I've just downloaded an app to prevent my phone from going into sleep mode when the screen shuts off. This is to keep the Wi-Fi locked on so I can get messages even when my phone is idle. It's a pity that the Blade's Wi-Fi is flawed, because using this method is gonna hurt the battery a bit to say the least. So far it works great. Other apps simply re-activate the connection upon wake, meaning that it still can go off when sleeping. By keeping the phone technically awake even when the screen is off will make sure the Wi-Fi actually remains on.

This is the app I'm using specifically:

What would you recommend for backing up texts, contacts, etc? Something like Dropbox or is there a way of auto-syncing with your PC?

You can sync and store your contacts on your Google Account so no matter how many times you wipe your phone, you'll always have them.

For backing up texts, I use this:
    https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore

It uses XML and saves it to your SD card. You restore your texts after you've installed a new ROM by simply installing the app again and restoring the backed up XML file. It couldn't be easier!

Anything that would cover losing your phone?

edit: Or can you just back up the xml file on your PC whenever?

Oh big time, it'll store it in a folder of your choosing on the SD card and you can just lob it anywhere on your PC at any time.
