One or two of my posts have them heading to Sigonella which is a United States Navy/NATO/Italian Air Force Installation/Base.

What do you guys think the rebel council in Benghazi are doing wrt the rebellion at the moment?

There seems to be a lull in fighting, with attention being focused on the siege of Misratah.

Do we know if the rebels will start to mount a more effective /cohesive/diciplined advance westwards?
Last I saw, the would pile into their landcruisers only to turn-tail at the first enemy atillary shell.

two schools of thought - one is that they are attempting to considate their rabble - i mean heroic freedom fighters into a more effective fighting force, with things like 'discipline', 'cohesion' and 'command and control' playing at least some part of the new doctrine.

the other is that they are fcuked - that all their experienced, trained, switched-on people have been killed in the initial successes or have run away with their heads in the hands knowing that its all going to turn into a one-sided bloodbath.

    take your pick...

The optimistic scenario is that the rebels are taking time out to learn from the recently arrived NATO military advisors and are consolidating for a push Westwards.

NATO destroyed 12 of their best tanks in error which was a severe loss. They have however been receiving light weapons from Qatar (confirmed re the Milans above).

The news tonight is that Gadaffi's forces have been using FROG-7s to bombard Misrata and has now launched a major assault on the port - there are several NATO aircraft overhead. If the port falls Misrata's lifeline is cut.

This is interesting because it is from the Western mountains, an area we haven't heard much from. Again a Milan has by fortunate coincidence turned up in rebel hands.

Does anyone happen to know what the Grippens who 'went tactical' lately were actually doing? Did they hit anything? If so, what with? Was it a recce/EW sortie? Just curious, as its an interesting development to see Sweden at 'war'...more or less.

The RPG camper, looks like he may have missed it!... "hey, was that a tank? BOOM!" would an RPG have time to arm if fired that close to a target!?

Depends on who made the round. A Russian round should arm after five meters, but so many copies and improvised rounds have been produced that it could be 50m to pre-armed.

Speaking of controlled shots, what about this from a demonstration by Gadaffi loyalists to the media a few days ago.

This is from the malta times a reliable source

    http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20110501/world/gas-masks.363135

Pro-Gaddaffi forces have been seen roaming the streets of Misurata wearing gas masks, contacts in Libya's besieged city have reported to timesofmalta.com .
Sources at the hospital confirmed that pro regime troops were wearing gas masks. An independent source said there were reports that thousands of gas masks had been distributed to troops yesterday.

The information raises the prospect of use of chemical weapons, long feared to be in the possession of the Gaddafi regime.

It's not the first time that the libyan army is on the busniess end of them milans

During the chad-libya wars the chadians equiped by the french deployed them from technicals to inflict heavy kills and victory on the libyans
for anyone interested in geo-poltics and militray history the chad-libya conflict is a not very well known but interesting affair.

Libyan militray history under gaddafi is basically a list of ****-ups and defeats

Some say that Chad was on the verge of an full -scale invasion of libya by wars end such has the scale of libya defeat but french dipomatic pressure stopped them. It's possible and debatvale that Chad troops could have finished gaddafi of in 1989 had they been given a free regin

The milan although old can be a battle winning weapon as it was
in the falklands at goose green etc.

Has anyone where trained with the milan?
    How complictaed is it?
How long would it take to train up a unskilled rebel with it?
