Liveatc.net have an app for that but only for iphone up to now.nothing for android yet.

Just save it as a bookmark and listen using your browser. Works fine.

Flightradar24 has an Android app, both free and paid for. Much better than liveatc which is good for listening to the tower, etc., Flightradar has at least two 'listeners; who plot/broadcast aircraft positions over Ireland.

Has anyone else used this site ( http://www.appsgeyser.com/ ) to create their own apps? It's easy to do. Made a few from mobile websites. I know they're basically 'shortcuts' or 'bookmarks' but they're pretty handy. Here's a couple that I did:

    Leinster Rugby (not great)

    chart?cht=qr&chs=140x140&chld=L|0&chl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.appsgeyser.com%2FLeinster%2BRugby.apk

    The Chive (pretty good)
    http://www.appsgeyser.com/18767
    chart?cht=qr&chs=140x140&chld=L|0&chl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.appsgeyser.com%2FThe%2BChive.apk

    Sportguru (pretty good)

    chart?cht=qr&chs=140x140&chld=L|0&chl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.appsgeyser.com%2FSPORTGURU.apk

    The Irish Times (pretty good)

I did have a look at it but couldn't grasp what it was they were actually offering - a webview window with more ads loaded on, parading as an app?

No thanks. Last thing we need is the market flooded with more sh!te. ;)

    This apps pretty handy.

You install a server app on your PC (free)
    http://www.plexapp.com/

Then install this on your Android device (about €3.40)
    https://market.android.com/details?id=com.plexapp.android

Then you set up folders and it'll categorise and stream your videos / music to your device.
You can also add plug ins like Apple Movie trailers / CNET TV etc. etc.

It's a little bit techie but it's cool once it's working.

I haven't tried it over the internet yet but it's meant to work.

Edit: seems a bit buggy the more I use it. Worth keeping an eye on though.

Edit2: I just tested it remotely. So Windows machine at home with Plex server running and appropriate rules on firewalls. Then in another site connect to the server using Plex on the phone. Using Wifi it worked quickly and easily. Using 3G it was a bit slower but once the video started playing (after about 20 seconds) it was smooth and no jerks. I probably wouldn't recommend using it with 3G unless you're on one of the all you can eat plans.

No more having to load video to the phone. Now it's just accessible as long as I have internet access.

Right, looking for recommendations for a Task manager, simply put the best alternative to Remember The Milk.

I've seen Astrid and SpringPadIt, both seem the require a data connection. Is there any way in which you can use them offline and sync when on wifi etc? Even if this isnt the case the main requirement is tasks syncing with my calender, I see SpringPadit only do events, is there any program that does tasks too with gmail tasks? Re-accuring tasks would be handy too, like setting up a daily task list and it refreshing itself every day.

    All help appreciated.

I don't know about SpringPadIt but Astrid doesn't require a data connection. You can work away on it while you're offline and then when you go online it'll sync with Gmail tasks. It can do repeating tasks as well I think.

Does anyone have suggestions for apps that'll allow me to sync my itunes with my Galaxy Samsung S? I'm willing to pay a few bucks for the pleasure. I tried the free version of TunesSync, and it worked well, but hasn't the greatest rating on Amazon. Thanks.

Does anyone know of an app which will allow block my 10 yr old son from accessing inappropriate web content from his Android phone? I've already disabled 3G data but do allow him wi-fi access in the house. I do trust him and want to give him appropriate web access but boyz will be boyz!!

I'd doubt there's an app for this.

Its not a definitive block, but I use Opendns adult site blocking on our home network.
    http://www.opendns.com/solutions/overview/

Its free, just register with them, configure your level of content blocking and set your routers dns to Opendns, you may need to run an updater software on your pc/router if you have a dynamic ip.

(The easy way for your own pc to get around it is to set static dns on your pc's network card with your isp's dns servers)

If you trust him then you would`nt be on here asking for an app, :p

    Funny guy Lewis!!!

He needs an Android phone about as much as you do and for similar reasons you do i.e. making and taking calls, texting his friends and family, listening to music, watching movies on long car journeys, playing games including correspondence chess, using alarms, making lists of things to do/weekly jobs etc etc. The Latitude feature is also very useful for sussing out where he has wandered off to with his pals on a Saturday afternoon.

I suppose he could have an iPod shuffle, a regular 'dumb' phone, a Nintendo DS, a personal DVD player and a Sat Nav tracking system instead of an Android phone but I thought a relatively cheap Android phone (less than €100) and €10 a month in top ups was the best solution. ;)

Can anyone recommend a German 'phrasebook' app that can be used without an Internet connection?

Heading to Germany next week and don't want to shell out for a phrasebook but also won't have Data turned on!

Can anyone recommend a good GPS app that can accurately measure the distance from point to point (margin for error ~5 yards). I don't mind paying for one that's accurate. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Europa.

The MapMyRun app will measure point to point distance for you but I don't think you'll get any that are accurate to 5 yards as the app will only be as good as the data supplied by the OS.

I'm pretty sure only the military can measure that accurately but if you're measuring a longish distance it's pretty accurate.

an android is a bit excessive for a 10 yr old kid tbh..!

just my take up..If I had a kid like that he would be lucky to get a nokia with 12 buttons

I don't see the big issue with giving a kid a smartphone. As long as they can be trusted not to drop it. Kids are quite capable of getting the most out of technology, my little sis had no problem playing away with an old laptop running Ubuntu when she was 9.

Though the chances are, if you try to put parental controls on it the kid will get around them quick enough.

Not if you do it right.

This reminds me of my sister and she was not really into there whole internet thing, did`nt really know how it all work and all, then when her daughter wanted a laptop, at first it was no this no that, its been a few months now and both of her daughters 11 & 14 have Facebook pages and Bebo pages, practically unmonitored and after all the, no they can`t put there picture up there and you can`t put your real age, blah blah, she totally gave up on it all.

That`s why there`s such things as passwords, locks and restrictions, to keep kids safe and when parents give into that, well then you might as well let them come and go when ever they want to. There`s nothing wrong with some tough parenting.

Yep used copilot on the west coast (California & Washington state) for 2 months before christmas on my desire. Worked very well.

Just back from spending two extremely frustrating weeks in Florida trying to use it on my wife's Desire HD and my own Galaxy S.
It continually failed to pick up a satellite signal or spent long periods of time "determining position". On more than one occasion, it dropped the signal just as we were badly stuck for directions.
We drove one day from Naples to Orlando and it only picked up a signal in the last 20 miles of a 3hr 15min drive!! Luckily we can read maps.
Seemed to be the same on both phones.
Not a bad app considering the price but not something you would want to rely heavily on in my own personal opinion.
