Also doing clontarf half, but dont intend to race it per sae, just to use it as a long training run somewhere in Dublin I have not run before. Its a good time for me to focus and target..

I managed to finish the Connemarathon just over a week ago. I didn't use any training plan, I just run/train as I feel. I run 4-5 times a week from 5k to 12k and one LSR at the weekend usually from 21 to 35k. It got me through but I'll probably do some longer runs before my next full.
Anyone else doing the Kildare half?

    Eoin

I'm signed up for the Kildare half. Had to pull out of the Dublin half last September, which was to be my first half, with a nasty hip flexor muscle tear 4 weeks out and ended up being out for about 8 weeks.

Started training slowly in January and have been loosely following Hal Higdons Intermediate HM plan. Going well so far although not always getting 5th run in due to family/work etc but averaging out about 20-22 mpw. LSR up to 9.5 miles and plan on getting up to 12 and winging the last mile on the day. Have done the MSB 5k and GIR 10k and planning on doing a local 4 mile race and the Leixlip 5k for the cakes:D.

Also signed up for the Kildare half. Training was going okay until this week did 11.5 miles on Saturday and now I have Bronchitis which I had for the last 3 weeks but ignored it, should have gone to the doctor earlier, so no training for the rest of the week.

Hope to be doing 14 miles by the time Kildare. Would love to do the big one

doing Kildare myself (1st half/m), ran 15 miles on Sunday and really felt it after 13.5 miles. Had been up to 12 miles for 2 previous long runs. Going to drop back to 12 for this weeks long run, but was wondering should I stay at 12 now for all the long runs leading up to the day or try for another 14-15?

I would think you would be okay to do one more long run but leave it a week or two before Kildare so you could do a 14 mile Saturday week.

Running my first half in Kildare on 15th May. I am down to do an 11 miler this weekend as an LSR but there is a local 4 mile race on Sunday that I always do.

Should I just do the 11 on Sunday and forget about the race or try to do the 11 on Saturday and race Sunday or is that asking for trouble? I'd like to race the 4 mile to get an idea of where I am fitness wise and my longest run to date was 10.5 miles last Sunday. Another option may be to incorporate them on the one day - i.e. 2 mile warm up - 4 mile race - 2 mile warm down and maybe a 3 mile run later in the day. Hits the 11 mile target but is that a bit pointless??

Maybe push it to monday. Legs will be sore but just keep the long run very easy it is more important to get time on your feet rather than trying to do it at speed.

Cheers ecoli, never thought of moving it to Monday but sounds like the best option. These Monday-Sunday training plans;) Will take it very slowly and see how I go.

I tried doing a race (Dunboyne 4 miler) and then a long run (ran the 17k home). I was shattered and probably wouldn't do it again. The race isn't just 4 miles, it's the intensity that gets your energy levels down and tires your legs.
Might also have been due to pushing a double buggy in the race with two kids weighing 53kg between them...nah, couldn't have been that...

Yep, that was me! My son was cheering me a lot of the way, my daughter fell asleep in the sun after the first mile. Just after mile 3 my son also conked out. My wife was running/jogging it too but I got the buggy duty for some reason!

I ran a p.b. 1.32 in a recent half marathon and am looking for hints and tips off any experts out there on how to shave off another three minutes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

So how is everyone getting on.

Got out for a nice run last night. 9 miles in 81 mins.........that puts me on track for a sub 2hr.

Hoping to do Strawberry half on June 26th, anyone else doing it ?

Doing Clontarf Half the week later, the 3rd July.

Dont know to go for 1.50 or push it and go for 1.45 - I guess I will see how I feel as I wake up that morning [and what the weather is like!]

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

I'll be there that day on the mic and playing music.

The course is good and flat, wind in the beach could be the only problem.

    1:45 Vagga.
You don't give yourself enough credit.

I'm hoping to do the Clontarf half too, I'll book it closer to the day when I see how the legs are. Just getting over a strained hamstring.
I got 1:50:04 in Kildare (with a dodgy hammie), so hoping for sub 1:45 this time.

Actually doing both of the halfs (the Strawberry and the Clontarf), which is a bit of a home race for me...

Hopefully we wont see the storm force winds on the beach this year...

You didn't enjoy the Saharan section last year, MisterDrak? At one time, I lost sight of anyone ahead and behind me. It felt enjoyably wild for a city-based road race.

Donny, I was running with my vest off (as it was about 20 c), and got "sandblasted" with the wind on the beach section...

We will see what nature can throw at us this year ???
