Skipped my 3, last night ...bold me! But did it this am before work instead - did 5km in 29m flat - so happy enough with that.
Was trying to enter the 5km in Rathfarmham on Sunday and altho today is the closing date its refusing to let me enter..(maybe its asign from God!!)
5m tomorrow ...hopefully in in the park.
Got paid to day so thinking I need new runners..well I dont but the ones I have are half way thro their life so I shoudl probably begin to break in a new pair...might go to Bray on saturday - everyone seems to rave about Amphibian King

They closed it last night apparently. They're taking entries on the day in the school from 8am...

I've been told that you don't need to "break in" new runners. Either they are comfortable from new or they never will be. I got my last pair (Avia) and did a 10k run the next day followed by a 6k the day after and they were fine the whole time. I tend to have two pairs on the go at once, and alternate them.
Having said that, I was at the physio on Friday and she thinks that the pain I'm getting in my left shin is due to the runners (a specific pair - Mizuno), as I was fine during the half last week running in the Avias. I have a LR on the cards for tomorrow, so I'll test out the Avias and see if I'm in any pain during/after.

Hi all ,looking for a bit of advice . i signed up for the cork to cobh 15 mile run a few weeks ago for next sunday for 2 reasons .1 it will be my longest race yet ,half marathon in kildare has been my longest to date and have a few 10k and loads of 5k over the summer .2 it was only 10 euro and with that getting a t-shirt and goody bag not bad eh.

Right thing is got a blister on the foot during achille roar ,that healed up fine ,now have some god awful insect bite infecting right leg im sure it will be all healed up by next weekend but ill have feck all training done since achille roar bar swimming in the pool , so should i rock on and try the 15 miles on the day or pass on it for another time .

Also been reading born to run getting ,so restless not able to train what do people do when they are injured feels like ive this energy built up inside me cant release it

Can you walk with the leg infection? You'll at least need to get some brisk walks in with a bit of distance in them. Once it heals, how soon can you get back to running and how long will you have been doing no running at all?

    Hope it heals up quick!

Probably best to let the legs heal, 15m is a bit far for no training.
I'm from Ireland and have been in Sydney for 18months now. Heading back to Ireland next month for a while, not sure how long yet.
This time of year you'd be better off going to Melbourne as it will be a lot cooler in the summer. It's only just started spring and we had 27 degrees all weekend...

    Best of luck,
    Eoin

Hi guys, now that I have discovered I am still in one piece after the half (had a glorious sunday afternoon long steady ,yes not slow now ! steady run in beautiful cool sunshine yest ) am playing with the idea of travelling to Galway for the half next saturday. Will have to decide by Wed. It is a 1 oclock start, so very doable if mr Leo b will drive me and 3 kids perhaps a dog in tow as well! Anyone any experience of this one.Seems to be a fairly flat coastal route, could this mean a gale of wind in the face for 7/8 miles :eek: But really 50 euro:mad::mad::mad::mad: Now hello there outrageous recession or not! Any opinions would be delighted. Ta

I know its a bit away but most of us are focusing on Waterford on Dec 11. Its only 22 euro and the feedback from last years race is very very good.

Picking up kids from school, mulling over all, I cannot justify 50 euro for a poorly run event, if it was top class, then perhaps, negotiating pedestrians over a 2 lap course put me off, I can just about negotiate these legs, thinking of having to weave in and out :mad: I had a fab experience at Dublin half, equally Omagh ( tough course ) cant justify the long trip from north county Dublin with three children to this event, spot on ....... its Waterford for me, just keep putting in the miles. Thanks for all the advice ,great to have this running community to tap into. Roll on waterford.:):):)

Good on you! I got my 305 in March and love it! I ended up getting it on ebay new. Happy enough and no issues (yet).

You can change that, it's all in the manual (which is also available online). Let me know if you get stuck.

Great value... i think mine was a little expensive alright as I bought on pixmania and the Sterling - Euro exchange rate pretty **** at the minute. But tbh I was too impatient to wait for one to come from the US and I have been bitten too many times on ebay to trust it!! At least I should have mine tomorrow! :D

Ddint get to do my stretches last night (as per Hal plan) but hopefully I will fit them in at work today. A cold has been threatening all week and my throat was sore yesterday so I took to my bed with paracetemol at 8pm!! Still feel off but hopefully I will get out fro 3 miles this evening. I hear the weather is supposed to clear.

Plan for me this week is 4,4,8

I's also like to get a cycle in but weekend is very busy.

I'm off to Lanza on Nov 10 and would like to be up to full distance before that and perhaps have done 15 before Waterford.

    Sounds good.
Not necessary to have done the full distance before the race, but mentally it is good. Something about not going into "the unknown". Have to say though, my first half was a bit easier than my second as I had only ever run 8.5k before the first and had no idea what it would be like!
Just go to your happy place :)

Oh i've done the distance before and did my 1st half in July, with injury i've been held back and with a 15 miler under my belt i think the actual lrace will be easier on the day.

Would you consider the St Barry's half in Tarmonbarry on Oct 10th?
Supposed to be a grand event, think its 15 or 20 in and only about 50 did it last year.
    I'm contemplating it-
Long run Friday morning will decide it for me

Thanks for that WB Yeats, thats def worth lookong at. Small numbers used to scare me away, afraid I would be the last poor devil home, getting over that SLOWLY, I love what I do, do the best I can, so what if I was the last, hubbie and kids will wait for me anyway!!!!!!!!! Will seriously give that one a look at.

Advice guys - my plan calls for a 30 min "tempo" run this evening.

    How fast is tempo?

Oh and P.S I still havent gotten my garmin (it was due today :( )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Are you following a Higdon plan? This is what he says
Tempo Runs: This is a continuous run with a buildup in the middle to near 10-K race pace. A Tempo Run of 30 to 45 minutes would begin with 10-15 minutes easy running, build to 15-20 minutes near the middle, then 5-10 minutes easy toward the end. The pace buildup should be gradual, not sudden, with peak speed coming about two-thirds into the workout. Hold that peak only for a minute or two. I consider Tempo Runs to be the "Thinking Runner's Workout." A Tempo Run can be as hard or easy as you want to make it, and it has nothing to do with how long (in time) you run or how far. In fact, the times prescribed for Tempo Runs serve mainly as rough guidelines. Feel free to improvise. Improvisation is the heart of doing a Tempo Run correctly.

    A 30 minute run is 10 warmup, 15 x 10k pace, 5 warmdown.

Yes an adapted Higdon Intermediate Half Plan.

Thanks Raycun, thats great - that doesnt seem to daunting then!

I thought it would be about 5k pace over the entire 30 mins.... should I not be pushing myself more though?

I suppose that's only week 2 of the plan - in a few weeks you'll be doing 7x400 intervals and they could be tougher.
How does this compare to your previous training?

Yeah fair enough. i am new to speed and tempo training so I should probably progress slowly. I wont complain, I will be cursing them in the future Im sure!

Thanks again Raycun. Hope the DCM training is going well, you wont find it now.

hi all long time lurker :)

been running a couple of months now so i decided to start the hal higdon 1/2 marathon plan with waterford in mind.

Havnt run a competitive race or any of that before or even signed up yet as ill see how the training goes.

Ill be getting my gait analysis done next week, will be in the queue for the winter gear in lidl on monday and am seriously considering a garmin.

So far ive been mainly doing my running on grass, with only a couple of road runs, but that will change as it'll soon be too soft soon.

So am i all set then :P

    Any advice is appreciated :D
